Robert Anae, PhD

Coach Anae is something of an enigma. I thought it would be interesting to read his dissertation. (And that right there probably tells you WAY too much about me!)



A Google Scholar search turned up the following link:

Turns out that his dissertation isn't available online, sadly, but is available in the Lee Library. Being on the East Coast, I doubt I'll get out there anytime soon. But if somebody else wants to go find it, I think it'd make for an interesting browse, if someone were so inclined. The title alone, including the misspelling, is somewhat telling:

He finished it in 1999 for his PhD in Sociology from BYU, during a period when he wasn't coaching.

Anyone game for checking it out from the library and giving a book report? Or better yet, for photocopying and sending it to me (I'll pay) and I'll give a book report?



For me as a development economist, his Masters Thesis, completed in 1990 at the University of Hawaii is even more interesting: Economic development, wage labor, and fa'a Samoa. But it's a bit far to get to the Hamilton library in Manoa/Honolulu.

Hey all, i will try to do a book report for everyone. Also, regarding the misspelling, a lot of times some dumb copy editor or even the library personnel that enters the title into a searchable database just isnt paying attention. Not Dr. Anae's fault in all likelihood.

As for a really way-too-brief book report, the main topic is that it assesses the racial inequality in coaching careers. Lots of white coaches end up in the positions of authority and advancement (head coaches, coordinators, QB coaches) but often the minority coaches do not and end up in position coaches that have the least opportunity for advancement. There's more, and I'm happy to take questions if you want. So, (now this is my own spin) we can add football coaching career trajectories to the 50 billion other ways that reflect racial advantages and disadvantages in society.



Cue the comments on "black coaches just need to work harder, then they'll get advanced" alongside the tokenism comments of "what about Coach X? He's black and just look at him." aka the Oprah/Pursuit of Happyness effect.

And who says BYU isnt diverse enough? or that they hamper scholarly efforts with a focus n diversity? Maybe you can send this post as a letter to the PAC and attach Anaes Dissertation as proof that BYU is a legit "research" institution. ;)
