Anyone heard what the LV oddsmakers are forecasting on the point spread? Also curious as to the strengths and weaknesses of of So MS and what their home record has been this year.

Road Game

1 seed

Jet Lag

SM will be favored.

That should keep us humbled and focused.

BYU has its work cut out for them. SoMiss is a very good 2 pt/3pt shooting team and also a very good offensive rebounding team. Sounds a lot like St. Mary's and SD - who they struggled against on the road. Hopefully, their experience with these two teams will help them in game preparation. If Davies continues at his torrid pace, and stays out of foul trouble, he will help equalize the outside shooting of So Miss. However, he will need outside shooting help from Carlino and Haws.

My 30 seconds of watching their game after the BYU game and a perusal quick of their roster- I have a few observations.

The tallest player on their team with regular playing time is 6'7" and their main rebounder is 6'6".

They have made and attempted more 3's than BYU this year.

Both teams like to get up and down the floor as they average 77 ppg and 74 ppg respectively.

Should be an exciting game.

Rose is going to have to limit Cusick's time on the floor if they want to win. He sucks against quicker guards and we're going to have to play more man defense to help neutralize their rebounding ability. We're going to need to see more Calvert in this game. I wish Sharp was healthy enough to play but he might be done for the year with his achilles injury

Play man D = W. I think that's the key. Our zone sucks too much to stop anyone from hitting 3's, which is their specialty apparently. Play man D and box out. We should be able to get some good production out of Davies since he can usually handle guys smaller than him. I fully expect a win here.

Austin should be able to use his length to get some boards too.

He's been playing better as of late. Not on floor as much it seems

They were 1-15 from threelandia last night.

Yeah, that just means they'll go 14-15 from threeland on wednesday. I have to stay pessimistic. The last two games I've predicted a loss and BYU wins big. So... So Miss will throttle BYU Tomorrow. :D

Go Cougs.

Key will be Carlino - as he was last night. If he limits turnovers, shoots well, distributes well, and controls the tempo (inside-outside game), we win this. Haws and Davies will be so much more effective if we have the other team having to guard Carlino from deep.

Actually, you might be on to something. The travel and recency will be two distinct factors that could combine for a bad night for the Cougs. Both NIT games have been preceded by a week of scouting, game prep, and no travel. A rested Haws and effective Davies and Carlino have been huge.

The other factor that concerns me is the shooting percentage for SOMiss. Regression to the mean (of last nights poor shooting%) with our suspect perimeter D could portend the end to this little BYU run. I hope not. Hopefully some of our MO can continue. Go Cougs!

Let's re-phrase to "their preference." No 3 point shooting team hits their averages every night (unless they're playing against our zone).

As to the first question about line on the game...anyone who bets on an NIT game is among the most degenerate gamblers out there.

Southern Miss really good at forcing turnovers. Those types of teams have given Rose fits his entire tenure at BYU.

It does seem that way, doesn't it? :sulk:

Vegas odds makers are calling this game for Southern Miss - by 5.5 pts. BYU has not played real well on the road against good teams. They are confident BYU loses tonight.

I think this game is a toss up. BYU is playing it's best ball all year. The whole starting line-up is playing with confidence and purpose. Especially our big 3. But, remember, we have played "lights out" the last 2 games at the Marriott Center. We've left the "protective bubble" and are in unfamiliar, hostile territory tonight with limited rest.

I think it's a toss up - it depends if Davies, Carlino and Haws find their rhythm.

I unfortunately think this is the end of the road for BYU, but it has been a much more fun post season than it was regular season so I'm happy.

How is Davies finger?

BYU is 0-5 on the road in the NIT.
