Spring Scrimmage Standouts and Surprizes

I think a little spring speculation might still be allowed on this site. What are folks predicting? Who will stand out? What or who will surprise or capture fans attention?***



Christian Stewart. Folks will be saying, who the heck is that? Or where did he come from? And while maybe not overtaking THill, he will make some noise. He has game and a nice pass.



Coach Holladay. Fired up Yelling from the sideline. Maybe from 2J as well.



Hine. Some people refuse to believe until HE happens in a game. But for spring ball, he will not disappoint.



Offense. Will look awesome and awful. Between the new hurry up scheme (if they unveil it and actually take the risk and run it) and the thin Oline, we will likely see both.



Other predictions?

I want to see how the MLBs do. I don't think we will see Hill so it will be Stewart against Olsen.

I would not consider seeing Hill as a surprise. But sounds like you would be really Surprised if Hill plays. I think Hill will get at least two series. Then, split between O and S, with Munns getting at least one series, if he's "cleared from his concussion."



Yes, looking forward to seeing Unga and Pikula and whomever else at middle. Also, hope to see a larger Fua.

I think we'll see Hill.



I want to see Hine. I want to see the TEs. I want to see how how the C and DT are playing.

I'm curious to see how the corners fair against each of our QBs and WRs.

I just hope we don't see snow.

Looks like the real surprise is that it will be a spring GAME and not practice!

Really want to see how Cameron Comer is handling the BCB duties.......Really hope we can find an answer to some of our problems with him

Does the fact that it is now a scrimmage/game and NOT just a practice mean we may not see as much of Hill?

Hill will still don a green jersey. And if he misbehaves (run too much) I suspect this OC will actually control the qb not feel powerless to chain him down.

I have read that a WR has been asked to play inside. This could mean the others are not stepping up or that this one has star potential. I will be in SHOW ME mode, but hope to be pleasantly surprised.



Nose tackle and CB are the question marks on defense. ILB will be solid IMHO.



Questions abound on offense - staff and players - I expect them to be ragged, but flash at times.



Reading about the three interceptions yesterday indicates that they are not afraid to throw it and there were some long TD passes.



Defense will look better than the offense imho.



I read that it will be like a real game except for ST. Not sure what that means.

Bumped--to remind people that not all hope is lost with Christian Stewart.

Thanks for bumping. I am no expert, but what I saw on television did not bring comfort to me. Too many of his passes hung in the air a long time. And no team is going to fear Stewart keeping the ball on the option read....ASU's second stringer did great. Utah's second stringer did great. USU's second stringer did great. Maybe Stewart will blossom yet. 10-29 against USU, though, does not bode well....

I blame Stewart's poor showing Friday night on play-calling/Anae more than Stewart. The cardinal rules of bringing in an inexperienced backup QB are to (1) take pressure off of them through the ground game, and (2) build confidence with a simplified passing game.



I think Anae either panicked at the loss of Hill and played desperation ball, or he decided that USU probably knew BYU should try to do those two things, so Anae was going to go against the cardinal rules to try to take USU off guard. Either way, (1) Stewart has a top-shelf talent at RB in Jamaal Williams who should have been utilized to take some pressure off of Stewart, but instead he finished the night with only 17 carries--and only 6 of those came post-Hill injury with Stewart in at QB. Inexcusable. (2) Anae kept calling for Stewart to throw low-probabiliy bombs, and wasn't helped with receivers suddenly developing stone hands.

I am sure that is the case. I hope he shows better this week Regardless of what Anae did or did not call, what I did see from Stewart in terms of his arm strength/accuracy and his running ability was unimpressive. Based on the comments I remember reading out of spring ball etc., I had higher expectations. I am not even sure this team can run the option read offense with Stewart.....

Sometimes I get the impression Anae over thinks things or errors to far in an effort to do the unexpected - no will expect me to run it on 3rd and long, or no one will expect me throw the ball deep with my newbie QB.



Stewart, who's amped, in the mean time is going to try and do it all because he wants to prove himself.



Bad play calling IMO on Anae.

And others would look at the clock, the score, and the inability of the BYU defense to keep USU from scoring and the fact that USU was giving up the deep ball, and decide they needed to throw it to score often enough to win a track meet.



Expect every remaining opponent this season to dare BYU to throw deep until BYU proves they can do it consistently.
