Why's that? Nearly every year a #1 fails to get to the sweet 16. This shouldn't be a big talking point. In fact, how many times has a mid major knocked off a higher seed to make it to the sweet 16? I don't know, but again nearly every year it happens at some point in the tournament.

Two years ago, 2011, Pitt lost to Butler. Gee, that was hard.

Three years ago, 2010, Kansas lost to Northern Iowa.

Gonzaga and the WCC are fortunate that the Zags' early exit is a secondary story this year. Thank you, Florida Gult Coast. 9-seed Witchita St. is a relative power compared to Cinderallas FGCU and La Salle. And having Oregon as an under-appreciated 12 seed doesn't hurt either.

Also, thanks to New Mexico and Georgetown for their even-earlier exits at the hands of 14 and 15 seeds, respectively.
