Was in Provo on Thursday. He was an All-American JC DB last year. He looks OK, more of a safety than corner, he doesn't look terribly fluid in his hips on the turn.

Did he get an offer and accept?

The big question is if Daniel is a better option than Comer or Hague at BCB?

Depth is nice even if he is only their equal. Injuries happen.

what i don't get is that if he was an all american why was he not picked up by someone?

I thought the same thing. I guess there are still differences between an All American JC CB and the skill level of a legit Div.I receiver. If not, it seems he would have been snapped up by now. Good secondary guys are always in big demand. But, we need help. We shall see if he come to the Y.

Daniel states that it has to do with him not completing his AA degree in a timely manner. He said that a lot of schools gave up on him because of that if that is indeed the case

How does that make sense? Other schools passed on him because of academic issues... but BYU is interested?

Must be something else.

No that makes sense.

Non-BYU team: We like Daniel, but we can't take him right now because he doensn't have his AA degree and can't transfer to our school right now. So let's not hold up a scholarship on someone who may not make it, and get someone right now.

BYU: We've got an extra scholarship, other schools who were intersested no longer have an opening. We do. Now that his degree is done, he can transfer. Due to our own scholarship crunch, we now have a vacancy he can fill that other teams can't.

So other schools were concerned he wouldn't make it academically at a JC, but we think he'll be okay at BYU? Didn't Star get his AA degree on time?

I don't think it had anything to do with them worried he couldn't make it academically, he just had not finished and may not have finished in time to join the team so instead of wait around and see if he would finish or not, they went with other options who were already finished.

I can't remember if Star got his AA degree on time or not. But Star didn't qualify for BYU out of High School. And BYU doesn't usually re-recruit athletes that don't initially qualify.

I don't know if Daniel was initially recruited by BYU or not - although it does seem BYU has softened on the re-recruiting policy of JC kids.

I read where he said he was being recruited by BYU and other schools and he had a 3.89 GPA, but because they weren't certain he would finish his AA in time they backed off.

NCJAA and NCAA regulations stipulate that a two year JC player must have an AA to move on and play at the NCAA level. If it is a one year JC player they must show that they are on track to graduate and meet the two year year requirements before they can transfer (This is per my bro in law who played Bball for SLCC)

Teams stopped recruiting him because they had Walt Williams fear... recruit the guy hold a scholarship for him because he is supposedly going to graduate in the summer and he fails to do so and the school is left standing with an empty schollie for a player who didn't graduate in time. Many schools have been burned by this and thus with many JUCO players if there are any questions about their graduation status schools tend to get a little weary.

After watching the highlight film he reminds me of Chad Barney that played about 10 years ago. Played mainly safety at Dixie but did play some corner.... came in and played slightly out of position but was as better than the average BYU corner (at the time). As far as someone stating that his hip rotation is slow... it appears to be but with that grainy footage IMO it's somewhat difficult to determine that conclusively. With as much of a technique coach as Howell appears to be I think that could be something that could be corrected fairly easily. Just my ten cents on the subject!

Huh? How can you make it academically and not graduate?

How many have been burned by straight A students? Something doesn't add up here folks.

After the Star miss, I hope Bronco reevaluates that policy. Did Star not meet the NCAA standards initially?

Just because you're a straight A student doesn't mean you have taken all of the necessary courses to fulfill the requirements for graduation. I knew a few kids in college that were straight A students that had over 120 credits completed but because of changes in their major some of the classes they had taken didn't fulfill the necessary requirements to graduate so they had to take 1 more year of classes.

I am assuming most of the posters here are BYU grads... how many people did you know at BYU that transferred in from another school and had good grades but BYU didn't accept all of their transfer credits so they had to complete extra classes even though they were above the required 120 credits to graduate. Not trying to be rude but it's not rocket science to figure out why even with good grades schools may have been nervous to offer a schollie... if he doesn't graduate he can't play this year. Remember we're not necessarily talking about grades more about fulfilling requirements.

Pretty sure a someone at the JC could confirm that he had registered for the required classes to graduate.

And, how's this different from offering a scholarship to a high school student before he had graduated?

Someone probably could confirm that he was registered for those classes... I am just going off what I was told by a JUCO athlete who had D1 offers.

It is no different than offering a kid a scholarship before graduating high school, but my understanding (and I could be wrong) when I played in college the juco kids we had come in had a tougher time because the school they are going to attend doesn't have to accept the classes from the other school if the degree wasn't completed. If the degree is completed then they accept the degree. It is easier for a high school kid to do makeup in the summer than a college student because it is likely the course that is needed to graduate isn't offered in the summer semesters. Where as a high school kid can complete a packet and get the needed credit.

Don't take me wrong, I am not disputing what you are saying I am just going off what I have been told and have seen from JC athletes. It makes me nervous hearing they are recruiting a guy who was dropped due to possible academic/graduation issues. It makes me think of all world Corner Walt Williams that never set foot on campus because he screwed the pooch on his JC graduation requirements.
