It's a schedule like that (6) that is going to put Kyle Whittingham on thin ice. He's got about 15 or 16 games left before he essentially becomes a lame duck coach.



Calling my shot. Bookmark this post. Whittingham won't be the coach at Utah in 2015. He'll be fired before our during that season.

BYU does not face many sure losses, but plenty of teams that are as good as or better than SJSU was in 2012. Those games can go either way and all but USU went the wrong way - lucky we had them at home.

Bleacher Report Alert: There is not such a huge gap between Utah's schedule and BYU's schedule. The report also has a HUGE slant toward the PAC 12 in these rankings. Unreasonably skewed IMO.

And, no way is Utah's schedule tougher than UCLA's. UCLA plays at Oregon, at Stanford, and at USC, plus at Nebraska (and at Arizona and at Utah). Home games against ASU, Cal, Washington, and Nevada (and Colorado and NMSU). No FCS. Utah's schedule does not beat UCLA's slate. The schedule rankings are too subjective.



Comparing Utah and BYU schedules: Utah's big road games are Oregon and USC. Not that different than BYU's big road games at Notre Dame and Wisconsin. At Arizona = At Nevada (see 2012 New Mexico Bowl) and Washington State = at Virginia.



At home, Stanford and Oregon State are comparable with Texas and Boise State. Georgia Tech and MTSU = Arizona State and Colorado. Weber State = Idaho State.



Difference in BYU's and Utah's 2013 schedules? UCLA in SLC > at Houston and at BYU > Utah in Provo. But at USU > USU in SLC. So, I don't see how one schedule is top 6 and the other is barely top 50.

So what are possible reasons for the disparity? Are we just homering by saying ours is tougher than 47? And Utahs is not tougher than 6th?

Who knows. Presumably as the season unfolds both numbers will regress toward the mean. But maybe the PAC is BACK.

It's way too early to know. A year ago, based on the 2011 season, many of us thought that Georgia Tech was going to be the toughest game on the 2012 schedule. SJSU and Oregon State were going to be cakewalks.



Looking back, we beat down GT 41-17 and OSU and SJSU finish in the top 25.



BYU's 2013 schedule has massive POTENTIAL to be the toughest ever. If Boise State and Texas return to form; if Notre Dame continues to win games; if Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, and Utah are competitive in their respective conferences....this could be a schedule for the ages.



OR our opponents could have down years and the schedule could be relatively light.



I tend to think that Texas, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin will be great - top 15-20 teams. Boise State will get 10 wins and Georgia Tech and Virginia will be competitive in the ACC. It wouldn't surprise if MTSU contends for the C-USA championship and knocks of UNC on the road. So, more likely a tough schedule than average.

Utah's schedule is tougher than BYU's because BYU will play an eventual 4 win Utah, on the same week that Utah will play an eventual 10 win BYU. That's a huge difference!

I am surprised to see the U schedule ranked 6. But this is one source. This source may be PAC biased.



It mattereth not. U will not do well in 2013. Perhaps, if PAC is really this strong - they can tey to hide behind that excuse.



This will be toughest Y schedule ever. But keep in mind that every team in a Big 5 Conference plays a schedule like this every year - watered down a bit with OOC cupcakes. We have 3 or 4 sure wibs too.



It is nowhere near the toughest schedule in the country. It is just tougher than what we ever had in WAC or MWC glory years. Ty Detmer's 8 win senior season with 3 losses and 2 ties is the only contender from the glory years.



Note that the BSU schedule - as Usual - is not even as tough as Y.

Is not a March forecast of SOS in the same category as any other preseason prognostication or poll - fun or maddening to look at, but not reality. To paraphrase required Securities Exchange Commission language "Past performance is not a guarantee of future results." Or to quote a famous statistician - "It is unfortunate that so many place so much on so little."



It will be interesting to reflect back on this SOS forecast in October. My guess - the PAC-12 as a whole will benefit from the perceptions generated by a reduced and dumbed-down out of conference schedule to the same extent the BIG has done so for years. But the SOS will only be a function of them playing each other.

So the Pac 12 has suddenly unseated the SEC as the best conference in college football?
