2012-13 Dave Rose - Regular Season Grades

It's time to hand out grades for the players of the 2012-2013 basketball team.

Please select the overall grade you think the player deserves. The grades will all be averaged to determine the final CougarCorner grades for the players.

This poll is for Dave Rose.

Under Rose this year, the team went 21-11, and 10-6 in conference. He played 12 guys with over triple digits in minutes (1, Haws, had quadruple digits in minutes played). And of course he brought in a football player. This was his 8th year in a row leading BYU to over 20 wins in a season and his 2nd in a row 3rd place finish in the WCC.

I was disappointed in Rose this season. Some of his old demons came back go haunt him - poor adjustments, poor half court offense, and poor rotation. He didn't have the horses this season to cover his areas of improvement.

Rose needs to get rid of some dead wood both on the team and coaching staff. He needs to have a sit down with Harward, Ambrosino and Delgado. Kaufusi should be thanked and sent on his way. Nashiff or Hall should be looked at as well. I don't have any insight into the coaching staff, but our shooting needs work and our front court defense, other than Carlino is in shambles.

We need to pick a team identity and stick to it. If we are going to be a run and gun team we need to have shooters, athletic defenders and rebounders. If we are going to be a post/half court team we need recruit for that.

Rose needs to learn to accept with his Seniors aren't good enough and put young guys in positions to learn.

Maybe the coaching staff deserves some blame but Dave Rice is looking more and more important.

I give Rose a B because I believe most of the issues were personnel and assistant coaching problems, and while those are ultimately his fault, his reaction to them in the off-season will make more of a difference than anything he possibly could have done mid-season. I don't know enough about plays and rotations to say how well he did there. He definitely deserves a better grade than Bronco in the half-time adjustment category, as the team often appeared completely different in the second half (so much so that I'd sometimes wonder why they started the game so poorly).

Rose put together a 20+ win season with nearly no REAL starters. I love Haws, but the guy is not going to be able to shoulder BYU basketball without some partners in crime. Haws would be a 6th man at many WCC schools.

Other than that, is the program still on the rise?

I agree that this team was a significant drop-off in talent vs The Jimmer Senior Season and continues the downward slope ever since that season ended. Next year, barring some house cleaning and recruiting break-throughs will at best be flat and possibly another slight drop.

I do not believe that having CHris C and S Rodgers healthy would have made a dramatic difference, although it probably would have gotten a few more wins.

The Lone Peak boys will trickle in between missions and development - but something needs to fill the holes between now and then and the other two positions even when they are here and experienced. JC recruiting is such a crap shoot in basketball, too.

Maybe someone will step up and hopefully everyone will stay healthy.

I gave him a B for BENEFIT of the DOUBT. You seem to have forgotten about some huge leads lost after half-time and some late minute fades.

You were right up til 6th man. Then, Brick.

Both wrong. We had 2 1/2 Starters. Davies and Haws were all WCC and Carlino was pretty good half of the time.

Other than that - nobody else looked like a WCC starter with any kind of consistency at all.

But, Rose recruited them.

Wow, I never really thought through how weak this team was top to bottom until I saw them all lined up for grades. Rose really didn't have much to work with! Even so I was a bit disappointed he wasn't able to pull his usual magic and get them all pulling together. They just never really jelled. I guess every coach is bound to have an occasional bad year and I hope this is it for Rose.

I'm not forgetting about those, it did happen occasionally. But more often than not the team came out performing better after half-time.

Certainly not defensively. We were progressively worse in the 2nd half defensively.

Certainly not defensively. We were progressively worse in the 2nd half defensively.

Yeah, maybe I was just noticing offensive slumps in the first half going away in the second (I remember Greg Wrubell giving statistics on this, but I'd have to look them up to cite them). I do have a feeling BYU's offense didn't improve in the second half as much against the very good teams. (Except the first game against Gonzaga, but that is only because our first half was absolutely abysmal).

I would be interested to know if the defensive slump in the second halves was due to poor adjustment decisions, decreased intensity (like with Haws), or a change in focus meant to spark the ailing offense from the first half.

I think our guys ran out of gas, which is why Rose started rotating in bench players a bit more towards the end of the season.

In the first half of the season, Tyler Haws would start out slow in games and then really begin to warm up. But he got tired and quit warming up ever, and Davies' foul trouble, along with BYU's lagging D, began to make 2nd-halves our weakness instead.

How can the WCC scoring leader be a 6th man?
