My Overall Grades and Why

Carlino: B - Carlino's ball handling and distribution improved over last season. His shot struggled at the beginning of the season, but he turned it around, mostly by improving his shot selection. Needs to still work on that. He's a great PG and I look forward to watching him next season.



Davies: B - He came out strong, faded and tried to finish strong. I wonder how much that ankle hampered him. Once of the best bigs we've had in the last 15 years. Cost us games with his lame fouls.



Haws: A - Gets an "A" just because he was so much better than expected. Very consistent. However, he needs to work on not forcing shots. He's a competitor and too often tried to force shots. Needs to work on passing and ball handling. Towards the end of the season, he got a bit "lazy" and stopped moving without the ball as much.



Zylstra: F - Didn't improve. Yes, there were a couple games where he showed up. But his defense is absolutely horrible and his shooting extremely inconsistent. He basically cost us the San Diego game.



Winder: C - Didn't get much PT, but when he did he tried to force things. I also noticed he rarely moved on offense, opting instead to stand at the 3 point line and clap (my biggest basketball pet peeve). Defense was solid and he should have probably gotten more PT because of it.



Sharp: B - I was surprised by Sharp and didn't understand why Rose stopped starting him. He was a rebounding machine. Bit small for his size/position. Hope he bulks up and works on some post-up moves.



Harward: D - What a big dissappointment. I wonder if getting married took the fire out of his belly. Needs to get motivated and get to work. No post up moves, small for his size, and bad defense. Kinda wonder why he's on the team.



Cusick: C+ - Some like Cusick, some don't. I've never been a big fan. He played well and solid. Best shooter from the 3, but for a shooting guard we needed more points from him. His defense was average at best and his dumb fouls on Dee against San Diego contributed to us losing the game.



Calvert: B- - He played okay. He gets trapped easily and favors his right hand way too much, but I liked his confidence.



Ambrosino: D - Another head scratcher. Poor defense and for someone that was supposed to be "lights out" from the three, the lights were barely on. I expected more.



Delgado: D - His performance left me wondering why we picked this guy up. For a "lock down" defener he sure fouled a lot. Had a solid stretch in the middle of the season, so mayb he just needed more minutes, but he came in slow, out of shape, and his shooting was bad.



Kaufusi: C - I acutally hope he doesn't come back to the team. He didn't add much other than fouls, which in many cases cost us points. He hardly grabbed any boards or scored. Yes, he added size down low, but the only way he was able to defend post players was fouling them. He's a technical foul waiting to happen.



Coaching: C - Rose' choice in a rotation had me scratching my head all season. A player would come in, play lock down defense which would let BYU get out and do what it does best, run. Rose would then sub in the slower, less athletic defender. Our offense starts with defense. As such, the best defenders should have been on the court. Similarly, too many Cougars were standing around doing nothing once we were in a half court set. Too many lesser teams gave us fits. Rose still has trouble producing in conference tournament play and we've yet to beat SMC in WCC play. We should, at the very least, be splitting with SMC if we want to go any where in this conference.

I read it all but the only major disagreement I have is calling Carlino a "great point guard." Sorry, the kid has never beaten anyone off the dribble and throws away more passes than any PG I can remember. He is a SG playing a serviceable PG at this point. Nothing more.

Carlino averages fewer turnovers than Delladova. Would you call Delladova careless with the ball or guilty of throwing away passes?



Particularly towards the end of the season, a lot Carlino's turnovers had to do with team mates not cutting to the basket or being where they were supposed to be. It's like a WR not running his route and then claiming it was the QB's fault. Haws was particularly guilt of this. Haws would start cutting only to stop half way there.



Certainly, Carlino can improve, but his team mates need to improve as well.



As for beating players off the dribble, that's false. He took it to the hole plenty. Does he split defenders like Jimmer, no - but who does?

Seconded. It's no secret that I like Carlino. He is a good player. He has the misfortune of being the one that handles the ball in a ridiculous and often pointless half-court set. Carlino is also our best defender, especially in man, and that one isn't even close.



My only major disagreement was when you said "Cusick was an average defender, at best". He is easily the worst defender on the team, and I don't think that "at best" his defense was anything better than poor. At worst, he was atrocious. Also, Winder gets WAY too much credit for his defense. He is athletic, but not good at defense. He is constantly out of position. Once he learns proper defensive fundamentals, I imagine that he will be pretty good defensively, but he isn't there yet. He is still a better option defensively than anyone else that plays the 2 or 3 position, though.



I would also maybe give Davies a B- or a C+ for disappearing in most big games, and not doing basic things like boxing out and posting the majority of his time on offense. That type of laziness and mental focus lost games for us. Plain and simple.



Haws would get an A- or B+ from me, but not for his performance. He got tired through the end of the season. It isn't a surprise that we went 7-7 over the final stretch, as we were riding Tyler pretty hard, and his body just couldn't hold up post mission. Where he would get an A- or high B+ from me is making mental errors out of frustration in games. Like the pushoffs, and other times that he let the other teams and defenders get under his skin (he was getting mobbed, I know) but he was an entirely different player in the beginning of games (patient, willing to work his man) vs the end of games (forcing shots, getting turnovers and having bad possessions).

Ha! I forgot a out Austin. He gets a C- in my book. He hustled and played hard. Needs to learn to stay on his feet. I like his outside shot, but if he wants any meaningful minutes he needs to bulk up a bit and develop some post up moves.
