To Blitz or not to Blitz?

We did against OU. We did against Wyoming and some of the other less stellar teams, but we didn't much relatively speaking against FSU and TCU. I can understand the reasoning why we are more cautious against more skilled teams, but isn't it worth taking the risks with a freshman qb to go for it more often than usual? it seems as though it has been pretty succesful.



An obvious key to this game is getting pressure on Wynn. If he is getting comfortable in the pocket, we could be in trouble. he has shown he can throw quite well to brooks and reed.



I for one hope we take some risks and blitz more right out of the gate. While there are risks, I think they are worth taking.

Wynn is not mobile, is inexperienced, and looked rattled v. TCU under pressure. Yeah, I say blitz him early and often from all over the field. Corner blitz, safety blitz, LB blitz, give him and that O-line every look possible. Ponder at FSU could run it, dalton at TCU could run it, so I understand why we blitzed less v. them. But Wynn is no runner and the Utah spread is actually more pro style drop back with him running the show. Blitz him. I want the kid seeing nothing but blue jerseys and green grass all day long.

Blitz the crap out of him. Our DBs are much improved over last year but I don't think they can cover the puke receivers for too long. They do have some pretty decent wide outs and other weapons. I don't want Wynn to get settled or find a rhythm all day. We should be rushing at least 5 guys every down and occasionally pull out the jailbreak. By loading the box we can not only pressure the QB, but we should be able to contain Wide and make Wynn beat us with his arm.



We don't have very much film on the kid but we know he's an inexperienced true freshman. If anyone is going to beat us, better make it be him. Put heat on him all day. If only the blue hairs behind the puke bench would do their part and heckle him when he's on the sideline, it would be even more effective. But I'm not going to hold my breath waiting on that.

Yes, blitz often but also make sure Logan is covering Reed. I don't want to see 25 yard slants to him all day in front of Bradley. Drop the LB to Reed's side and blitz from everywhere else.

Bring the pressure and make Wynn piss himself. Stack a safety over Reed, and call it game!

During the New Mexico game I upset that we only rushed 3 or 4 on 3rd and long and they kept converting. Then in the second half i got my wish and we started blitzing on 3rd down and New Mexico heppened to be running screen plays and burned us. I guess I would just like to see us blitz when it is unexpected so that Utah doesn't have the perfect play call on for when we do send pressure.

I think that effective blitzing is more based on an inexperienced OL than an inexperienced QB. Utah seems to have a pretty experienced OL and this may negate a blitz's effectiveness. I'm still not sold on Wynn's accuracy (14-28 vs SDSU; 16-32 vs TCU; 18-28 vs UNM; 9-14 vs WYO), so you might be able to drop more in coverage and see if he can find guys and/or then still hit them.

I think y'all will blitz right from the get go. Wynn shows promise in his reads, and I think your coaches know that. They want to get the thoughts of getting sacked in his head early so that he also has that to think about. No way your coaches just let him sit in the pocket and send guys back to cover the passing lanes.



This game will be a great indicator of how calm and collected Wynn can be. He's been working with Brian Johnson, so I hope he could be like that!
