One of the new wrinkles....

I've heard, and the little video that I've seen from yesterday's first practice indicates, that one of the new wrinkles Anae is going to be adding are sets with a second qb. This isn't to confuse a 2QB set with the 2QB debacle, but Anae is tinkering with the idea of putting the #2 moblie QB in the slot or in a wishbone formation with the #1 on the field to further add to the complexity of what defenses will have to prepare for and what they will have to recognize and account for in the "Nitro" paced offense.



Intriguing, and it will be interesting to see how Olsen (the presumptive #2 mobile QB) makes it work.

You know, when we were at the precipice of QB2, I proposed that the first snap should feature a line up with both Heaps and Nelson in a shotgun spread formation.



Make the defense wonder who is going to get the snap and which one will throw.



What play do you call if both are in?



Snap to Hill, pitch to Olsen with a rollout right, then options to run, throw to the right side of the field (Back, TE, WR), and a release valve of Hill running down the left side of the field.



Fans would go nuts and Anae would be a hero (unless it blew up) ;)

This could be really cool. I would love to run a two QB set against Boise State and give them a taste of their own trickeryness. Opposing defenses would have a serious problem getting ready for this stuff.

A far cry from three runs up the gut!!!!



I hope it works and is not just a novelty. But it certainly would be innovative and far from predictable, but it would have to occur more than on the goal line. And the other guy, Olson, would also have to be a threat to run. It would be like a triple threat x 2. Would that equal a sixtuple threat? Been too long since I've been in school.

I would love to see BYU experiment with a three-QB set. Opposing Defenses wouldn't know what to do!

Was that an on-purpose typo about Heaps and Nelson in the gun or are we as cougar fans that indoctrinated with Nelson and Heaps hype over the last 3 years that we type their names without realizing it.



Also, Ive seen a 2qb in the gun system run, not that effective. We did have a 3 qb set last year against Weber (Lark, Hills, Kuresa) wasn't very effective.

Lousianna-Monroe ran a 2 QB systems last year and had a lot of success with it. There is a thread about it.

And get Hoffman, Apo, and JW working on their throwing technique for an even deeper level of trickeryness. Oh, and Van Noy, too, naturally.

A three QB set would make people's heads explode. BYU has always had a fetish for the QB position, and this would just make for too much conversation amongst those of blue hair. Geez, why not just put all of our QB's out there? Hill takes the snap, read option to Billy Green, who flea flicks it to Ammon, who throws a screen to Munns, who then passes it to Tanner Mangum. Meanwhile, Cody Hoffman, Jamal, and the O-line are on the sideline head in hands.

I for one completely support anything creative and out of the box. Out of the box thinking is what put BYU on the map in the first place decades ago, and I believe that to come to major national prominence again it will take more out of the box thinking.

However, trickeration will also not substitute for a prominent Oline.

I've related this before, but one of the best football plays I can remember was in the McMahn, Young days. McMahn #9, was the starter and on the field came what looked like another #9. The first #9 takes the snap and pitches to second #8, oh ya, it wasn't the same guy but their numbers mixed me up, who threw a strike down field. I never have figured out why they didn't run that at least once a game. Young could have probably been an all American running back as well as qb. BYU has another qb a lot like that #8. Let's have some fun!



Oh, and the idea of Van Noy on offense once in a while, I like that too. He'd be fast and hit hard. Put him in on the goal line like New England did with some of their lbs.

I just want an offensive line that can block. Can we start with protecting 1 quarterback before we add another into the mix?



Considering that we won't have a healthy or complete line until fall anyways, I'd like the backups to be getting good training, and not learning how to zone block for a 2qb scheme.

I'm not calling for a 2 quarterbacks to be the offense, just an occasional confuse the defense play.

Again, the formation has a very athletic QB in Olsen/Stewart/Green lining up either in the slot or as a half-back. I don't think putting them in those positions, especially in the slot where we don't have anyone really locking the position down right now, is depriving anyone of a blocker, and this isn't going to be an every-down type of formation.
