Spring Camp will have few OL

There's no spring game against this year, no blue-white scrimmage (though there will be an open practice on March 30th). And I can't really blame Bronco for this one.

Braden Hansen, Blair Tushaus (1st-string center in 2012), and Braden Brown all started in the 30-6 win over Washington State last year. All will be gone in 2013, Brown to the NFL.

Ryan Freeman, Houston Reynolds (2nd-string center in 2012), and Famika Anae were second-stringers in that WSU game. Freeman graduated, and Reynolds and Anae both suffered possibly career-ending injuries last season. If either eventually comes back, it won't be during spring.

Marco Thorson also graduated, and Walter Kahaiailii's career also ended due to injuries.

Ryker Mathews and Brock Stringham (3rd-string center in 2012) return, but both will miss spring camp due to injuries, as will Terrance Alleto. That leaves our new QBs practicing behind 2012's 4th-string center, Manaaki Vaitai, who quit the team briefly before last season.

Solomone Kafu, a 3rd-stringer to start last season, is also back, along with Michael Yeck and a few others, not all of whom are even on scholarship (Andrew Crawford, Kyle Johnson, Quinn Lawlor, and Brad Wilcox). 7ish healthy bodies, 3 of which might make the eventual 2013 two-deep.

Joining the OL in 2013: OT Jordan Black (RM, unknown if he will be ready for spring camp), OT/OG/C Josh Carter (JC, should miss spring), OL/DL Tui Crichton (moving over from the defense), OL Parker Dawe (walk-on out of high school), OG/OT/C Tim Duran (JC, should miss spring), C/OG Edward Fusi (JC, should miss spring), OL Chris Hardinger (walk-on), C/OG Keegan Hicks (I think he is going on a mission first), OL Cole Jones (RM, former walk-on), OG/DL Tuni Kanuch (RM, might play defense), OG/OT/C Brayden Kearsley (coming out of high school, good to go this fall), DL/OT JonRyheem Peoples (might play defense), OT/DE Addison Pulsipher (might play defense), OT Thomas Shoaf (may serve a Mission first), and OT De'Ondre Wesley (JC, should miss spring).

That would give us 20ish Offensive Linemen in Fall, or roughly double the numbers that we'll see in Spring. 5-6 of these newcomers should make an immediate push for a spot in the 2-deep. That is when things will REALLY begin to get interesting!!

Crazy too-early guesses:

1s: LT-Ryker Mathews, LG-Manaaki Vaitai, C-Edward Fusi, RG-Brock Stringham, RT-Solomone Kafu. (2 available for Spring)

2s: LT-Michael Yeck, LG-Tim Duran, C-Brayden Kearsley, RG-Josh Carter, RT-De'Ondre Wesley. (1 available for Spring)

Will Fusi be ready for fall after his ACL surgery? Dude could bring some nasty attitude to the OL. I believe Alabama was interested in Fusi before his injury

Good question. I think so for Fall.

And Hicks, if he doesn't serve a mission right away, is also coming off of a shoulder injury.

I thought Brad Wilcox was also a scholarship player. Am I wrong?

Do you really see Stringham as a starter? I thought he was really really mediocre last year. I was happy when he got pulled.

given how much we seem to need olineman i wonder why hold was moved to defense. It seems he is well fitted for an oline spot. would love to be a fly on the wall when that decision was made.

Stringham started from the get-go last year, and is our top returning center. He was never really pulled either- He got hurt.

Holt is too light to play OL and too slow to play DL. So who knows if he will find a way to contribute. The TE position won't miss him much.

Cscoug- Wilcox was listed above, along with other returning players, some scholarship, some not. He is on scholarship (like some other guys that I had listed but then removed due to missions, like Hoyt). I see him and Jordan Black starting on the 3rd-string, and then maybe working themselves up.

Wow. Almost seems as if the Oline is more thin this spring than last.

Holt has always had heavy feet--just like Munns. Holt needs to pound the Cougar Tails, the eatery and the weight room and beef up his 240 to a solid 290. Otherwise my prediction is that he will not smell any more playing time at BYU. Good luck to him.

OL that might be around for Spring Camp but not for Fall:

Ryan Reynolds (Walk-on)

EDIT: I found Alleto in my post above. He is missing Spring due to injury, but will be back for the Fall.

Why will they be here for Spring but not Fall? Leaving on missions?

"OL Ryan Reynolds, #64, 6'4", 275 lbs, RS Freshman, attended Olympus H.S. in Holladay, Utah (Class of 2010) where he was All-State as a Senior, served in the Canada Vancouver Mission from 2010-2012. I also was able to talk to Ryan briefly yesterday and he told me he's put on some good weight since returning from his mission. He's currently playing guard and is enjoying his time with the team."

There may be room for walk-ons in Spring that there may not be in Fall, once more bodies, JC and HS, show up.

Also, guys may play in Spring but leave for Missions over Summer.

I think BYU just wants bodies for spring, so they can go live more and work on plays. Less simulation, and more physicality and actual execution worked on. Then get the new guys in for Fall, and run with the progress that was made in spring/summer, mostly with the QBs and skill guys knowing what to do.

Blocking is blocking. The Oline guys coming in have played enough football to be able to figure it out quickly.
