In his latest blurb, Drew intimates that the Carlino/Rose relationship is getting rocky, talking about Carlino riding the bench the last 10 minutes of the Gonzaga game:

[Rose] had yanked Carlino after the point guard threw up a 3-pointer early in the shot clock with nobody underneath to rebound.

I have no inside knowledge of the situation, but have heard some rumblings: I would not be totally surprised if Carlino is not in a BYU uniform next season.[/i]

I can't say based on that whether it would be a Rose decision for him not to return, or if it would be a Carlino choice to quit his second program. I can't say I'd be terribly heartbroken either way.

A coach having difficulty with a highly-touted player? That's unheard of round these parts.

There is a reason UCLA was ok with Carlino walking. Yes, he was horribly treated by some teammates who had real issues. But I have to wonder if he wouldn't have gotten more support from the UCLA coaches if he were more talented.

This would be a very big loss for the program.

I don't get the nonsense that Dave Rose has for Carlino. It isn't like Rose has set plays that Carlino is overlooking. BYU has ZERO half court plans when Davies is off of the court, and when on the court it is "look for Davies on every play and get Haws some touches".

But here is the catch, Haws is never open because he is being constantly mobbed and has mission legs, and Davies only posts about half the times down the court.

Rose is wrong on this one. I am happy that *someone* at least wanted to be aggressive against the Zags and shoot the ball. There were multiple times when he was out that we almost turned the ball over playing hot potato around the key until someone had to throw up a last second desperation shot/drive.

We are better with him on the floor than off. And even better when he is confident. I don't get why you'd pull this type of crap and waste it on a player like Cusick, who is out the door anyways, and adds just as many negatives to the table as positives, if not more. Cusick definitely gets different treatment, and I wonder why...

Agreed.....I don't see the the infatuation Rose has for no upside guys like Cusick and Zylstra. Our defense was so atrocious on the perimeter last night we are extremely lucky we didn't get BLOWN out as Gonzaga shot terribly from 3 last night. That won't happen the next time they play us

I hate this about college sports. A player gets benched for making a bad decision and now there are rumors flying around about him leaving. It was a horrible shot by Matt. He had numbers and probably could have got to the rim. Having said that there was a ton of bad shots taken by other players to. I think people also need to realize he is a young PG that has a big upside. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to be disciplined.

How about the 8 turnaround, fadeaway, jumpers that Davies pulled in the first half.

From what I hear though, Jay Drew is about as informed about BYU sports as a junior high student. From what I have heard, is that Jay Drew has burned his bridges at the Y, and any sources he claims are probably super crappy, as no one near the organization trusts him anymore. Sno or Lawboy would be able to comment on that, I think - as to his credibility and "inside sources." I am nothing more than a joe schmoe with a keyboard and no inside sources to speak of.

No exaggeration there :bug: :bug: He only att. 11 shots in the game pretty sure 8 of them weren't turnaround, fadeaway, jumpers........

I do like how Matt pushes the ball up the court. And a lot of time the risk is worth the reward.

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!

I tend to exaggerate things when I'm not being serious. Thanks for keeping me honest.

Looks like the blog post has been edited. The statement about Carlino not being in a BYU uniform is missing.

Good For Rosé for not allowing a player to defy what he has told him over and over. If Bronco would have done this with Riley, things would have been better for the whole team.

If Carlino can't figure this out, I get why he sat last night and why he's pissed.

Rosé's loyalty to Cusick is almost more of a anti-Carlino. He may not be flashy offensively, but he also won't always just start chucking like Carlino. Cusick did fire an air all and his total prayer of a three that went in was at end of shot clock, iirc.

So, it comes down to the offensive plan. Cusick can't really create on his own and he has to exhaust the big two options of Haws and Davies.

I really hope Carlino stays. But i don't fault Rose for actually being in charge of his program and his players.

This one brought me out of my reprieve from posting.

Aside from Jimmer (who isn't a good ball distributor), Carlino is the best PG we've had in over 10 years. If there is any truth to Drew's conjecture then this is bad news. I feel bad for Carlino because he came in with some astronomical shoes to fill and completely unrealistic fan expectations.

Kid is a sophomore. Aside from shooting Carlino's numbers are better than Jimmer's sophomore numbers.

Someone has to score points. Carlino, except for that long 3 had a good game against GU, even out playing Pangos. Haws forces just as many shots as Carlino.

I hope there is no truth to the rumor and I hope fans can look at Carlino with a bit of perspective. Next season, other than Haws and Carlino we have no scorers. None.

Yep. Carlino's been benched before and has come back strong. IIRC he was quoted as saying that his time on the bench lit a fire under him. Even if it doesn't though, Carlino was playing poorly and got benched, the natural order of things for non grit-exempted players.

Playing poorly? Carlino out played Pangos. Calvert completely derailed two come back drives - no one is calling him out.

In 23 min of play, Carlino had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. He committed 2 turnovers & 1 foul. Carlino out scored and out rebounded Nate Austin.

Problem with this team is NOT Carlino, although everyone loves to point a finger at him. It's the fact Rose hasn't been able to get or find a legit 2. There should be plenty of 6' 3" Mormon guys that can shoot the ball for Rose to choose from and the best comes up with is Zylstra and Cusick. Rose choice in a lineup is also suspect.

Jay Drew deleted the reference. He obviously must have meant Blair Tushaus. Who obviously disliked the nickname "Tushy".

I agree that losing carlino would be a huge blow to the program. He is only a sophomore and has been heavily relied on without having a legit 2 to rely on. I have to wonder why winder hasn't been relied on more to build his confidence? What I see on the team this year is a lot of guys with some skills but not enough confidence to get the most from them.

We really need carlino for next year and need to find an answer for down low. We also need a 2. Hopefully Mika will help answer our big guy problem and someone will grow into the 2.

Because Winder is a worse shooter than Carlino? This year Carlino is a pitiful .293 from behind the arc. But Winder is .250.

Last year, Carlino was an average .333 from three. Winder was .298.

For whatever reason, 2012-13 has turned out to be the year the all of Rose's recruits either couldn't shoot or were found to be very poor shooters.

So JDrew got us all spinning?

We need Carlino. We don't need all of Carlinos quick shots. I wish he would get this. He will, just like Jimmer, have his turn. Next year it will be the Haws and Matty show. You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em. Now when to pass away and know when to run.

I would bet even money that Drew got a whiff of Carlino or his dads displeasure that he was sitting the bench in the final minutes against the #1 ranked team in the country, and that as competitive people they said or hinted at things they didnt mean.

Competititve peopel get upset when they believe they can and don't get a chance to prove it. Big deal. He'll get many more chances.

There's a good argument to make that the result could have been different if Carlino were in the last 5 minutes, but not only was it senior night, but Matt was not playing great, so who knows?.

Honestly: Nothing to see here... this will blow over. It's not like Matt has competition next year at the PG spot. It's all his and by then he'll be far enough ahead of RM Kyle Collinsworth that no way KC gets starters minutes at PG; particularly because Kyle couldn't hit the side of a barn from the outside prior to his mission; he can't be counted on next season to hit those shots; Matt can be asked to take em.

Much ado about nothing; Matt is not transferring.

KC's three point shooting as a FR: .259. His FT%: .568. His 2P%: .526.
