So it sounds like, from the article, that nothing is really changing but titles.

So who is the Tight Ends Coach? This remains vague.

Sounds like they are more just formalizing structure and responsibilities clearly for going into the spring. It also gives some idea of a probable succession plan (Anae as HC, Howell as DC) should Bronco decide to move on at some point down the line.

I still want Bronco calling the plays.

I called this 2 years ago. He's a chip off the old Bronco block, chiseled from the same rock. But I Like that Bronco knows from where his competency flows and in many respects his success flows, and is still in charge of calling plays. This is also a good "step-wise" way to "train his replacement" (a good leader always does this) without exposing him to the responsibility from which each of Broncos Coordinators have suffered: termination. (I could profer a theory about Broncos leadership and how it seems to have a flaw that predisposes his Coordinators to get fired after a conspicuously short tenure, but I won't in this post.)

Things worked out so well the last time he hired a guy with 6 years FBS experience as a coordinator as well as the last time he promoted his secondary coach to be the DC, so why would I be at all concerned about him promoting a very young secondary coach with 6 years experience in the FBS to be the defensive coordinator?????

Yes, except, we all know this is functionally, Assistant DC, kind of like Assistant HC.

I give credit to Bronco on this one. He learned form mistakes. He knows he can't give up his most valuable asset--masterminding the defense, including calling plays. But Nick has the heart for Broncos intensity and if he can handle a lot of the minutiae and admin, (like a Bishops counselor), Bronco can focus on Ministering another great D and Game calling.

This was my favorite quote from the BYU press release:

“As I’ve stated previously, Robertis an extremely intelligent man of great personal integrity who is totally loyal to me and our program,” Mendenhall said. “I have full confidence he will not only help our offense succeed but also make great contributions to our entire program in the role as assistant head coach.”

I am pretty sure that quote was taken directly from Harry Potter #7 where the pensive reveals that Snape became a Death Eater only because Dumbledore told him to.. as part of a grand plan to defend and protect Harry.

Sounds like what KWhit did with Sitake. Grew him into the role. Gave him the title and mentored him before fully turning over the reigns. I expect the same here.

FOr what it is worth.. i talked to a former player today... albeit an offensive player... but he said Howell is "a hell of a coach"

It was here that said he would call plays.

Key point is that this is just a change in title. Apparently he had already been filling in as the DC when Bronco wasn't available, etc. Unless something drastic happens in the coming years, what we are seeing with the changes in titles and responsibility, is the coaching framework for when Bronco leaves the program.

I agree. I read these (herbal) tea leaves as Bronco's loyalty wanting to reward his defense, especially Howell and K-Pop, for a great year and wanting to secure their tenure before signing his own extension. He's learned a lot to get to base camp and wants to make sure he has a consistent team as he goes to make the final ascent with his final contract extension.



Management wise, this seems a good, shrewd move in many ways.

Shrewd? Was Howell going to. Leave? And was he so instrumental and critical that he needed this bump? Not sure he was, but maybe.

Ad how does this benefit KPop? I would actually think its a bit of a bummer for him not to get to bump.
