"Saint Mary’s College of California failed to monitor its men’s basketball program and a former assistant men’s basketball coach acted unethically in his recruitment of international prospects, according to a decision announced today by the Division I Committee on Infractions. The case also includes a failure to monitor and a failure to promote an atmosphere for compliance by the head men’s basketball coach as well as impermissible training and coaching sessions.



Penalties in the case include four years of probation, a reduction in men’s basketball scholarships during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years, a five-game suspension for the head coach during the 2013-14 season, recruiting restrictions and a two-year show cause for the former assistant coach. If the former assistant coach seeks employment at an NCAA member school during that two-year period, he and the school must appear before the Committee on Infractions to determine if the school should be subject to the show-cause procedures."



Say what you will about our mediocre basketball team (because they are, after all), but I'm glad we're at least doing things the right way.

Pretty harsh penalties, pretty much everything except a post season ban.

ouch. That's too bad. I like the WCC being a 3-4 team top heavy conference. This could really hurt SMC which would not be good for BYU.

Usually you see the smoke of such a pending find, but I had not seen anything noting such a big penalty. They are not stopped from conference tournaments or post-season tournaments. It seems like they hit them with the tournaments and pre-season tours that have the pizzaz to bring in recruits.



Yes, it is nice that BYU continues to follow an ethical practice of what they preach. That's what bugs so many of our opponents because they think we take a "holier than thou" attitude when we really just follow the rules given to everyone.

Yes. I'd settle for half of those sanctions if they would ban Delionsourdough for the WCC tourney this year.

I get the concern about losing one of the top WCC schools to the bottom of the heap for a while and how it will affect the conference, but would they have been a top school if they hadn't cheated to get there?
