BYU vs Gonzaga

Well Cougar fans it's that time again. BYU vs Gonzaga.



Shaping up to be one of the biggest road games in Gonzaga history with what's at stake.



1st - an outright WCC conference title dethroning the Morongans.



2nd - maintaining a lofty ranking in the polls.



3rd - maintaining a potential #1 seed in the Western bracket of the NCAA tournament.



4th - and of least importance the potential of reaching #1 in the polls for the first time in GU's history with an Indiana loss.



Zags on a mission, no pun intended. We expect to see a much better more focused BYU team but I believe we have the fire power to come to Provo and win the game.



What will the Cougars have to do to beat the Zags?



Go!! Zags!!!

Make the round ball go through the round rim more times than the Zags do.

C'mon Schmoe, you know that such thoughts are not in accordance with being part of a conference of "like-minded" institutions of higher learning ;) I will pray for the following instead: Carlino has a "Jimmer-like" game as in @Arizona, @Utah, etc., Davies discovers "Noah Hartsock-like intestinal fortitude", that the officials can recognize a "Haws-like mugging" when they see it non-stop, that Austin discovers "Noah Hartsock-like intestinal fortitude" and the ability to stay off the floor "Wizard of Oz Scarecrow-like", that Zylstra shows why he actually was given that scholarship, that Cusick doesn't show exactly why he hasn't been offered that scholarship, and finally, the rest of the bench provides unexpected offense, unexpected defense, and unexpected energy off the bench. Is this asking for too much? :) GO COUGARS!

Sadly Lone Peak will be too busy this week winning a state championship and securing that #1 ranking in the country. Maybe next year ;) GO COUGARS!

Yes, more. That The Poly gives the Viking a forearm shiver or "bump" to the ground, like he did to the SMC dude. Smething he wont forget. Or, other WWF-like entertaining events, since BYU can't seem to actually play decent enough hoops to be remembered.

Otherwise, if BYU has to lose to the Gonzo's, clearly the better team, then, go get that #1 seed! It's about time some non-BCS program earned and was actually given the #1 seed.

This year has proven that you can still be big time in college bball and play in the WCC. Gonzaga is going to get a #1 seed. They're a very good team and the NCAA is recognizing them as such.



Much like BYU with Jimmer (pre-Davies suspension). If you're good enough, your conference is irrelevant.

Rose thinks outside the box and starts using Delgado and Sharp more and Zylstra and Cusick less. Austin sees more minutes as well and starts to show some sort of offensive potential. I like Bronson but his minutes need to be limited vs the Zags because we're going to need all the offense we can get.

Step one to have a chance is to play a lineup that can defend Gonzaga and can rebound.



To physically matchup as best we can we need to start a bigger lineup.



Carlino

Haws

Zylstra

Austin

Davies



When Zylstra is off the floor Sharp needs to play the 3. Delgado and Winder need to play the backup guard minutes.



Of course we need a good game from Carlino. Ideally we need a way to get Haws free for some shots.

Well this is the game of the season I guess. If Rose wants to keep his tourney streak alive then this game will assure us of a spot in the dance imo. I doubt we go through the WCC tourney unscathed in such a short amount of time since we have no depth.



I'll be rooting hard. We're not that far off but it's going to be a tough one.

FWIW I think tha tthis game is meaningless. If we win we'll still need to win the tourney to get in, if we lose, but win the tourney - we're in!

When's the last time BYU had the de facto #1 team in the country come visit the MC?



BYU's gonna get blistered on Thursday with every suddenly on the line for the Zags.

We shoot insanely well from the perimeter and hit 15+ threes. Oh, and Carlino dunks it in traffic.

Agreed but Rose won't allow this to happen. He's not willing to change/think outside the box quick enough. I think Sharp should start instead of Zylstra as he provides a better rebounding option and might be able to shoot just as well

I have been calling for Haws at the two most of the year. It's a great idea to couple that with Sharp at three since he has become entirely ineffective at the four vs larger opponents. Bt that means Kaufusi at the four. And Rose wont bite on that bullet. Austin has also been outweighed, out-muscled, and out-rebounded at the 4. He's not the answer there, I'm afraid.

I think that the highest-ranked team to ever play BYU in the Marriott Center was San Diego State, when Jimmer beat them. They were ranked, what, #4?

It pains me to recommend starting Zylstra but we need his size on the wings and the threat of his shooting 3's.



This lineup probably wouldn't win but neither would the normal starting lineup. I see as more likely that Carlino gets hot so we score enough to win. To me the key is rebounding. If we can keep them off the offensive glass, then we'll have a real chance.
