Wow, If BYU had a 2006-2009 type of offensive year, we'd be pretty darn close to the top.

Wow, impressive. Looks like Spiff and you have been moonlighting at PhilSteele's.

Good stuff. Thanks.

Kind of sad how much abuse Riley has taken and that Doman got fired.

Actually makes some sense. I started multiple times that BYU was essentially for plays from being 12-1. And if you go back and look at my posts on how did we did versus opponents we were routinely above average - especially on defense. Which Steele confirms. BYU was a much better team than our record showed. And had we'd gotten even average QB play last year, we could have had a special season

Or had we not been clanking field goals at U and ND and elsewhere and going for two and failing at BSU, due to a kicker that misses EPs, or had an OL that could protect a QB, or avoided defensive lapses like vs OSU, or had better clock mgmt and decent tight ends and a decent full back or had some of these tough games at home vs road, or a typical SOS for BYU, or a couple of lucky bounces.

Team sport. We only came up a little short at pulling off upset wins. We had no bad losses. It was a good season

- just not a special season.

QBs play better when the running game is a threat, protection is good, and we have two receivers instead of just one that is money and two tigh ends that are threats instead of none.

Its so interesting how the blame can get spread around the team far more with this Sr qb than with a frosh or soph qb. Not picking a fight. Just sayin.

Please read my last line and see what I placed the blame. We got poor QB play in 2012. That was the reason we didn't have a special season. Even with the questionable play calling and our blocking the QB played poorly on his own merit and cost us a special season. Even average QB play (135PER) could have given us a special season.

I will assume you reference my post above. You cannot rewrite history even by changing your name. I posted the same in 2010 and 2011. Heaps sucked most of the time vs anyone with a pass rush - even when perfectly healthy. Perhaps he should be credited fir his lack of courage in the heat of battle. He too had a rib unjury, but throwing before plays could develop and without taking time to set his feet to make an accurate throw probablt kept him relatively healthy.

But that OL was only slightly better than this one and he was like a statue. We have not had a dangerous running game or tight ends since 2009. Field goal kicking was better. And the defense melted down Vs Utah.

Note that I accurately predicted 2010, 2011, and 2012 and probably am spot on with 2013 for similar balanced reasons. The QB is a huge part of it, but they need a supporting cast. Did I mention SOS and home field disadvantage or crappy WR play otjer than Hoffman in 2011 and 2010? Ir all matters.

I agree.

Yep. Riley "All he does is win" Nelson had a senior record of 4 wins 5 losses, and a senior PER of 119. Most likely our two best wins on the season were starts by someone else.

Any way you slice it the qb position was an ultra fail in 2012, and with decent qb play we had a serious shot of running the table with the defense that we fielded.

Yep, which is what makes 2012 so frustrating. We didn't need good QB play - or even average SR BYU QB play. We just needed average QB play. Instead we got crappy QB play.

We got the worst QB play (by PER) of ANY QB - outside of Jake Heaps in 2010 (which was somewhat excuseable/understandable since he was a true freshman) - who attempted 300 passes in a season. And by a considerable amount. Riley's PER was 119. The next lowest of PER of a 300 att QB was Beck in 2004 at 128.5

That year, Beck had two more TDs and five fewer INTs. I wonder what BYU could have done with five fewer turnovers and two more TDs last year?

IDK. Maybe if we had an OL, tight ends, and a FB to pick up blitzes we could have found out.

They could have. But players are still the ones most responsible for their own production. Yes, football is the ultimate team game and everyone is dependent on everyone else - but you are still responsible for you.

Our QBs stunk last year, stunk the year before and stunk the year before that - with just a handful of games being the exception.

We've gotten crappy QB play for three years, because we've played crappy QBs. They haven't made the plays that THEY could have, that THEY should have.

I've been consistent on this for years now. Players are responsible for their individual performance.

We need to quit wasting scholarships on the other positions and just recruit 25 QBs each year.

Helpful hint - when you play 3 or so QBs every year and they ALL ALL ALL play poorly there is something seriously wrong elsewhere especially if they are ALL ALL ALL getting injured.

Long gone are the days when a QB could play 2 or 3 years like Beck and Hall and hardly miss a game. And that is about right after we lost Unga, Vakapuna, George, and an OL that knew how to block.

Heaps - shell shocked - ribs - lost confidence

Nelson - broke or cracked everything

Hill - knee - out for the season

Lark - yes - even Lark finally got a chance to start and get injured

Coincidence? I don't think so.

Correct, there is something terribly wrong - hence the reason there is almost an entirely NEW offensive staff in place for 2013.

We don't know if the days are long gone when a QB could play 2 or 3 years without injury.

I meant long gone at BYU. Three years gone to be precise. I think we will see much more emphasis on QB and RB protection ie blocking. That was evident in this recruiting class.
