Great shot for Cusick, good way to finish. But this was a beat up USU team and we looked very poor.

Yeah, great moral victory for USU. I'll take the W and am happy with 20 wins. Onwards and upwards. BYU's defense looked better this game, still too many stupid fouls though.

This.

CC's shot was a huge Elixer for this team that hasn't been the same since Hellavadiva.

As well, The "NON-LOSS" to USU was critical to keep frail hopes alive. It was a little reminiscent and Carlinos version of Riley's chuck-a-duck vs USU two years ago. Thank goodness for a great play by McKay Jacobson back then and a HUGE ally-oop putback by CC. If he'd come down with it, instead of the ally, he probably doesn't get the shot off in time.

But the best takeaway is a legacy that, like Riley, can't be taken away from Craig. A "signature moment" that will live for a long time.

Zylstra is a good 3, and a terrible 4, IMO. Haws is a better 2 than he is a 3. And Sharp/Austin are great 3s and 4s for pure rebounding, even if they can't score. Just some thoughts of mine that Dave Rose might scoff at. :)

Rebounding is always a game of "how the ball bounces". It was a war for the rebounds last night, but I put more of USU's guards success in where the ball bounced when shot. If he was consistent in these numbers, then fine.

My thought in the game was I don't care if it was a last second win, I still want a win at home vs. USU. Carlino is quite the enigma, but I have to only hope that he comes to understand his limitations and quits turning the ball over due to poor decisions. He wants so bad to drive the ball to the hoop and I so badly want a Cougar that can do that consistently to pick up opposition fouls and score points, but he's losing too many balls on very poor decisions. I wisht there was a solution to this quandry.

USU also knew to win, they had to crash the boards. They had to follow all their misses and get as many additional opportunities as they could.

They couldn't afford to miss shots, not rebound and then let BYU get out and run. So they gambled that by sending four guys to the offensive glass they could get more opportunities to score. It nearly worked for them.

BYU didn't send the same amount to the defensive glass, because they want to get out and run - and that's tough to do when four guys are trying to grab the defensive rebound.

USU crashed the boards, BYU didn't.

I don't understand people getting down on Carlino. He is definitely not our problem right now. Last night he had 2 TO and 5 assists. That's a good ratio. He is one of our most consistent players since conference play started and it shows in the WCC stats:

6th scoring -15.4 ppg (btw 3 of our guys are in the top 6 in scoring in the WCC).

4th Assist - 5.4 apg

5th assist/TO ratio - 2.1

1st steals - 2.8/game (the competition is not even close, one guy at 2.1, next is 1.8)

8th 3 pt FG made per game - 1.8

12th 3pt FG % - 37.1%

13th in FG % - 44.6%

14th FT% - 76.3% (surprisingly, Haws is only 78.7% in Conf)

Not in the top 10 in minutes played.

Carlino is one of our bright spots right now. With him, haws and Davies we should be in the mix for top spot in the league (3 of the top 6 scorers in the league). My guess is our defense is keeping us from reaching our potential.

I watched a game that had the feel and look of "let's get the win with the least amount of effort" in preparation for the showdown in Moraga. There was a solid 5 minutes with no Haws, Davies and Carlino. We darn near blew it do to the poor rebounding, by everyone. It all comes down to tomorrow night fellas.
