Ok, for some of you concrete thinking, literalists, this will be too much for you to handle. Try to avoid resorting to insults, its just a hypothetical.

For the rest of you, it does present an interesting look into talent, present woes at BYU, and the future.

Regardless of what may seem obvious that a HS team would struggle to even stay in a game with DI athletes; similarly could a #1 college team compete with the worst NBA team? most likely not. But consider that Lone Peak has played against the Elite teams and players in the country and won all but one game this year. Not to mention destroyed some very good, top national teams.

BYU may be in the 50-100 range of college teams but struggling and trending the wrong direction.

So, let's look at match ups and then intangibles and weigh in.

Davies vs Mika. Davies probably wins this, but Mika is close. He is currently as big, if not

Heavier, he's athletic and can enforce the paint. He's played against tougher players than Davies and held his own. Davies struggles against larger players who enforce the paint.

Haws vs Shumway. On the face of this it looks like Haws wins. But Haws also struggles vs players that are physical and quick. Shumway has also guarded and shut down highly talented swing men across the country. He shut down Dalton Nixon as well. he is a great defender. Shumway would not out score Haws, but would keep him in check.

Carlino vs Emery. Draw. Carlino still struggles with turnovers in traffic and out of control play. Emery has played against the nations best Seniors and not only held his own, but scored well and consistently. Given the intangible of team defense, which LP is quite good at, I think this turns into a draw. Carlino can get hot, but so can Emery.

Zylstra/winder vs TJ. Probably goes to the college player. TJ is a pretty skinny kid. But he has a great knack for the ball, the openings and coming Off of screens and is shooting better than either of these guys. Very smart player. Size matters and TJ is limited. But I would give intangibles to TJ he could and would exploit Zylstras defensive weaknesses.

Sharp\Zylstra vs Toolson. Similar to above, this might be the biggest mismatch. Bt Toolson has been known to fill up the stat sheet and would be a realistic threat hanging around a perimeter that BYU doesnt always defend so well. But he could be neutralized with size.

BYU vs LP on team defense and offense? Not sure BYU is playing as a team very well, particularly on D. If LP could get their outside game going, it could make it interesting.

Coaching? Both great coaches. Draw.

Bench strength? ADV BYU. LP has some good players in the wings, but not ones that will replace LPs big three right now.

So, BYU probably wins this game. And while I don't think any HS team would ever be considered a contest vs a DI team normally, I think this LP team would be. I think they would NOT play scared. They have faced far more athletic teams than BYU. Just probably not physically larger, as well as age differences.

75-65 BYU. Which even though a loss, is saying a lot considering the gap isn't as big as most might think when they consider a college vs a HS team.

Thoughts?

BYU would win by 20+.

I think that's being generous to LP. I would love to see the matchup, but I think it would be pretty ugly, pretty fast.

Additionally, I do know that BYU's bench is somewhat weak, but lets be honest, many of the bench players on LP won't even sniff a D1 offer let alone suit up for a great program like BYU.

Maybe, Emery, Mika, Haws and Shumway could keep it somewhat close, but the minute any of their bench players come in, it's over. What happens when/if Mika gets in foul trouble against Davies. You don't think Davies would just tear up his 15-year-old back-up?

Anson Winder would eat Emery's 5'6" back-up for an appetizer.

BYU would run these guys out of the court.

Gotta go both ways. What if Davies has foul trouble?

Point is, Five on five, I think this is A good pick up game to watch. And it shouldn't even be close.

I think any our bigs could contain Mika to a sufficient degree. Mika wrong play the whole game and ANY BYU post player would dominate LP post backups.

not even a game. Would end like a basketball game I played in once. 101-8 in BYU's favor.

As Schmoe said, This is a clown question. Here are a few things to think about:

1. You are equating raw talent in high school with talent in college that has a lot of experience.

2. There are three D1 players on LP's team. Shumway is a tweener for me. Very athletic, but it is obvious that he is concentrating on basketball. Haws would destroy him. I have watched LP play. They are great for a high school team. But remember, there are only three D1 players on this team that have no D1 experience.

3. Carlino and Emery are not a draw. Not yet anyway. Emery has potential but he needs time to develop. He is too prone to anger still. That would work against him.

4. They haven't faced more athletic teams. They have faced teams that have athletes and have some D1 players, but they have not faced more athletic teams as BYU. These are high school teams and it is extremely rare to have 1 D1 player on a team. LP is the exception but not good enough to compete with a D1 team. Not even close.

BYU would win by 45+. Easy.

Mika is usually listed at 6'8" 210. Giving him the benefit of the doubt that he has bulked up to 220 but Davies is still much bigger.

Davies is 6'9" 235. He has the long arms that allow him to matchup with taller players. Davies struggles with bigger, athletes. Mika is smaller.

Haws has full grown man strength. He would bully Shumway.

The strength issue would control the boards in BYU's favor.

There is no doubt that LP is an excellent high school team, but they wouldn't even give Loyola-Marymount a game.

I'm sure not too many hear know this but back in the day, freshman were not allowed to play on D1 teams and every D1 school had a freshman team. One of the annual preseason highlights was a game between the freshman team and the varsity team. I can only remember one freshman team anywhere that beat the schools varsity team and that was when Lew Alcindor(Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) was a freshman at UCLA.

LP may have a great team but those young bodies just aren't strong enough to compete...would be fun to watch though ;)

So could LP beat the Utes? (Who could've, probably should've beat us?) Loveridge is very good and Washburn is servicable/good but the rest are leftovers from other teams. In D-1 basketball it's typically beleived that you only need 2 players to be good and 3 to be great. Could Mikah handle Washburn?

I don't think they could handle the Utes and they couldn't handle BYU. I don't think it's a terrible question though as a highschool senior can be older than a college freshman and we see teams with top freshman talent equate to the best team in the nation regularly.

Mika right now > Davies right now

Everything else goes in BYU's favor. LP would be sucking wind and couldn't move with 5 minutes to go in the 1st half.

You play church ball in AF several years ago? Cause my team lost by a very similar score once. I had half the 8 points. Haha!

When I was in high school, some of the former Liberty Blue Jay players that had gone on to play in college came back and played us in a game. We ran them off the floor, because 1. we were in basketball shape 2. we ran a set offense and knew each other

In this scenario though BYU isn't the all star team, Lone Peak is. The difference is that BYU is the team with better basketball shape and runs a more detailed offense than Lone Peak.

It might be close in the 1st half or quarter (however they'd play it) but with a shot clock and refs, BYU would ultimately wear them down and possibly blow them out. That's not to say that Lone Peak wouldn't score, they just would get worn down fast. Kind of the same thing that happened when Lone Peak played Montverde prep. All those guys on Montverde are college ready men (some extend high school, others are just freaks recruited from all over the country) and their prep coach is paid like a small college coach.

Just to follow up, I don't think Lone Peak could beat SLCC right now. However, SLCC is loaded right now.

Mika right now > Davies on a night in night out basis

Agree or Disagree?

I think Mika is going to be very good. But to say he is Davies right now might be a stretch. Remember Mika is playing against high school kids and is scoring 21.5 a game. Davies is at 18.0 a game against D1 players. I do think Mika can be the best big man maybe ever at BYU. But lets wait and see. Just enjoy knowing we have a good big man now in Davies and another good one coming in Mika. I hope Mika can be as good as Davies has been. I don't understand the hate against Davies by BlueisBetter.

Here is a list of BYU recent big men and there scoring averages.

Davies 18.0 ppg

Hartsock 16.8 ppg

Plaisted 15.6 ppg

Young 17.4

Araujo 18.4 ppg

I believe the other 4 are playing pro over seas right now.

BYU's Top 5 vs. Lone Peak's top 5, no substitutions, game half as long- I'll take the high school kids. At least they can hit from the outside.
