Why Big 12 Has Not Expanded - Rumor

Sorry for doing this. I tried to stop myself, but this rumor is out there - stumbled across it twice when I got bored and searchec for expansion rumors.

The rumor is that last time(s) BYU to Big 12 was looked at by The Big 12, there was a strong dissenter on the BOT who was concerned that with U already in PAC, that if BYU left for BIG, that USU would be left behind to rot and decay.

Of course USU now got promoted to MWC instead of dying what looked like certain desth in the WAC and are rejuvenated, so BOT might be less concerned about protecting USU and more enthused about BYU going BIG.

The other reason given is that with only 10 teams sharing the big bucks $20M TV and each having their own tier 3 rights, none of those teams will let their take shrink to add any team - so a team would need to be so desireable that BIG TV partners would cough up $40M for BYU and a partner.

And since teams lose their tv revenue fir nearly eternity if they bail, nobody is going to bail on Big and create a slot for BYU.

The funniest post was a guy that repeatef over and over about USU being land grant and along with SJSU the largest research budgets left in the West and with both being better than BYU football in 2012 - the next targets of PAC.

So is there any truth to the BOT USU loyalty? Is BIG really hilding out waiting for the BOT to get on board?

I, in 1st person Hawk, ain't buyin it.

I don't think the BoT bought the Big XII's argument as presented by BYU brass. The year before, BYU brass had sold the BoT how great independence would be. Then the next year they are back selling how much more they need to be in the Big XII. I think BoT wasn't buying it. They chose for patience to see if independence is as good as they were selling.

Does that mean the BoT is telling BYU brass: "You made your bed, now go sleep in it?"

Or perhaps: "How can we ask our recruits to stay true to the course they have chosen, if we are unable to stay true to ours?"

So a bigger 'life-lesson' about dedication and committment; qualities that are more important than wins and losses, or even .... money, or....... exposure?

I think the first. I think they told BYU brass, "Look, a year ago you came to us and said independence was the answer. Now less than a year later you're telling us, no! the Big XII is the answer. Why don't we just be patient and see what happens."

In the words of Hillary, what difference would it make to USU if we were independant or in the BIG12? Were we staying indy to just to give them moral support incase they needed to go indy? I don't know if I buy it unless the I'm buying the old theory that one next in line on the BOT really is not fan of BYU being invovled in big college sports.

I think it's more simple than any of this.

BYU finally learned its lesson to not agree to anything until all the promises were in writing. The Big12 said, sure we wont make you play on Sunday, but lets just sign the deal and we'll figure that part out later, and BYU looking back at the "sure, we'll figure that part out later" promises from the MWC said no, we'll sign when it's in writing. Then the TV partners stepped in and said no way will agree to not hold the championships on Sundays!

Bingo. This is what happened. We weren't wiling to jump without legal in order. TCU was. End of story.

Can BYU bring anywhere near $20 million to the Big 12? I think it can!

The rumors are that BYU is making about $7.5 million per year from its current ESPN deal.

http://www.vanquishthefoe.com/2012/12/7/3740478/have-you-considered-the-cost-of-independence-BYU-Big-East-Big-12-Expansion" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Over the last 2 seasons, BYU's home games had heavy doses of Idaho State and WAC teams. "Marquee" home matchups have included: Utah ('11), Utah State (11 and '12),

UCF ('11), Washington State ('12), and Oregon State ('12). 2013 finally brings some big boys like Texas and Georgia Tech, with Boise State and Utah, to LES. 2014 is heavy on MWC-level teams.

If a WAC-MWC home slate gets BYU $7.5 million from ESPN, I would think that a steady flow of Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, TCU, and West Virginia in LES would substantially increase that value. Occasionally, sprinkle the home schedule with Utah, Boise State, and Notre Dame and regional intrigue like Utah State and UNLV, and the BYU home schedule would be worth double, if not more.

Plus, the extra inventory options that a Big 12 BYU would give FOX and ABC/ESPN would provide new value. Instead of Iowa State-Kansas, a television partner could pick up BYU at TCU/WVU/Baylor...likely better TV options.

Is my thinking and analysis here flawed?

Who else can provide the $20+ million that the Big 12 would need to expand? There are certain ACC schools that could bring this value - Florida State and Clemson leading the list. But, I honestly don't think any ACC schools are truly interested in the Big 12.

Could Boise State bring this value? They would make a perfect travel partner for BYU. I would think that much of the analysis that would make BYU a good fit also holds true for Boise State. UNLV (based on market potential, new stadium)?

The posts I read gave credence to BYU bringing in the $20M, but nobody else out west as a travel partner. FSU and one other ACC school according to a recent study bring enough. Two other ACC schools missed the cut but were in the ballpark.

That author thinks the ACC is in trouble as soon as Big 10 decides which 2 additional schools to take. He thinks all ACC schools would go Big 10 at the first hint of an offer and all are holding pat, hiping to be chosen. According to him, nothing will happen until Big 10 makes its move, but the unchosen ACC schools will then be willing to jump to Big 12. He thinks Big 12 now has irs eyes focused to the east and will add 2-4. He thinks the only hope for BYU would be if only FSU is willing to leave ACC and Big grabs BYU to round out the numbers.

Some think BYU's only shot will be PAC - but only if PAC feels the need to keep up with the other expanding super conferences and realizes that it has no viable option to choosing BYU.

Big 12 has asked or is shortly asking the NCAA for an exception allowing them to have a Championship Game with only 10 teams.

I hope the NCAA has the intestinal fortitude and enough remaining clout to JUST SAY NO.

Otherwise, Big 12 may hold at 10 teams for a very long time.

Pac 10 tried this too, and was told no...so they end up inviting CU and :utard: . Larry Scott and the 10 dwarfs would throw a fit if Big 12 got an exception now.

BIG 12 needs to follow the same formula - invite a team from Utah and 1 from Colorado. I guess Utah and Idaho would work too.

UNLV. If the big12 were thinking long term they'd get unlv. Best market left in the west. Pair it with BYU or sdsu and the pac12 has nowhere left to go. Both give the big12 the pacific time zone for later games and thus the tv money. It makes my stomach turn but if I were looking to make money that's what I'd do.

It always amazes me how little the cities of San Diego and Las Vegas have done to tap their potential. Even in basketball SDSU does not draw a huge crowd.

Quite frankly, the LDS Church and the city of Provo have quite a bit of untapped potential if they ever figure out how to mobilize the bsse within the 5 priorities most follow.

Speaking of untapped potential. If I were BYU really looking for a new conference partner I'd be looking to work with the the remaining UC school (SD, irvine, riverside and Davis) along with unlv, SJSU, and maybe bsu, Hawaii or csu.
