How Many Healthy OL Players Will Show Up For Spring Practice

We have been told that we will have coaches in place by Spring Practice. We just recruited a ton or two of OL high school and JC players. And, we have returning players and returning missionaries and outgoung missionaries. Dizzying to keep track of. Factor in the injuries and it may all end up sounding all too familiar.

You know the drill. We start hearing about all of the surgeries. Most of the new recruits are not here by then. Pretty soon we start hearing that they are practicing around a shortage of OL bodies. Then we hear they do not have bodies enough for the Spring Game. Then our OL and some QBs RBs, and Receivers play to Not Get Hurt. Soft, fat, and happy instead of mean and nasty. Others play hard but get hurt due to poor blocking.

This could be the 3rd year in a row - unless the returning players are healthy for a change and unless some recruits and RMs are already in school.

What is it looking like?

Anae is already yelling (aka motivating-encouraging them to work faster and work harder) at the players working out in the weight room. Don't think that cream puffs on the OL are going to be tolerated. New, old kid in town, and he will clean up the mess.

I get that, but do we have enough healthy OL players to practice and scrimmage? IDK. Just askin.

Short answer: No. There are never enough.

Presently our former starters are all available to play, plus we bring in 4 JC OL. Couple of returned missionaries also return J. Black, etc.

More interestingly to me is the statement from Anae. Coach Anae has encouraged OL Tim Duran to put on some more weight but keep his body fat really low. He indicated that the ideal offensive lineman is 310 to 315 pounds with a body fat percentage below 20%, and is in good enough shape to be capable of running 90 plays a game.

When do the JC players and RMs arrive. If they are not enrolled in school in three weeks or so, they cannit participate in Spring Drills. I think in past years, Mendenhall said they need at least 10 healthy OL to practice effectively because of substituting and runnung special teams in parallel.

How many do we have for Spring?

This may be overly simplistic, but I count 14 olinemen that are reportedly healthy and at BYU for spring ball.

RT - Kafu, Black

RG - Vaitai, Stringham, Hardinger, Crawford

C - Tushaus

LG - Johnson, Dawe (Reynolds and Alleto = doubtful or questionable)

LT - Matthews, Yeck, Wilcox, Lawlor, Jones

More if Duran, Fusi, Carter, or Wesley are available for spring ball.

It looks like you might have to move some of the positions around to create a 3-deep at every line position (especially at center), but it appears that at least the bodies are there.
