Rate The Recruiting Class

Results are in. Big class. A lot of missionary comings and goings in the mix. Not much national recignition. Needs based. Big OL focus. More JC infusion than normal.



How does it stack up relative to your vision for the program?

I said "Minor disappointment - same old, same old". While this doesn't exactly capture my reaction, it is the closest. I like this class, so I'm not disappointed. We should see instant improvement with some of the oline JC recruits (and coaching) and we got two JC defensive backs.



There isn't anyone that makes a big national splash, so same old, same old. But the only time I remember that BYU has ever made noise in national recruiting (2009), didn't turn out so well. However, we have had walkons like Pitta and Criddle and 2-star recruits like Hoffman and Unga and others that turned out to be tremendous players. So, I'm not worried. My only disappointment is that "BYU-only" commits don't get better recognition.

I voted other. I didn't see the, "Can't I wait a couple, four, five years before voting?" option.

Most if not all would agree that you really cannot fully evaluate until you see it on the field. But then, nobody ever seems to go back and compare. For ratings services - old news is no news. And for individuals, it is a ton of work.



You are a data driven person. 7 years is a long way to look back.



Do you have a look back at the pre 2007 classes and how they turned out. It would actually be very interesting to see correlation, or lack between class rating and some measure of how the class panned out.

Here is BYU's 2007 class. Anybody want to help fill in the blanks:

Brendan Gaskins - JC QB - Did he ever play a down? "Graciously" moved aside for Riley to be the unused/untested/unevaluated backup QB in 2009.



Devin Mahina- HS TE - In the two-deep at TE. Has made some nice plays.



Cade Cooper- JC QB - Never played a down. Hurt in Spring Ball, then transferred.



Famika Anae- HS DE - Moved to OL, had to quit football due to injury.



G Pittman- HS DB - Transferred. I think he played sparingly.



Houston Reynolds- HS C - Injured after playing significant minutes last year.



Tyler Beck- HS LB - ?????



Gary Nagy- HS DB - Injured? Gave up football?



Brannon Brooks- HS DB - Did he ever attend BYU?



Jordan Smith- HS WR - Don't think he has ever seen the field. Did he stop playing?



Aveni Leung-Wai- HS LB - Did he ever attend BYU?



Star Lotulelei- HS DL - Never attended BYU. Went to Snow. Gave up football. Worked construction. Came back to football. Went to Utah. Not re-recruited by BYU. Could be a first round pick in NFL draft.



Braden Brown- HS TE - Moved to OL. Started for multiple years before graduating last year?



Kane Friel- HS TE - Starting TE for BYU.



Eathyn Manumaleuna- HS DL - Starting DL for BYU



JJ DiLuigi- HS RB - Starting RB for BYU for multiple seasons



Magnum Mauga- JC DE - Did he ever attend BYU?



Levi Mack- JC OL - Did he ever attend BYU?



Jason Munns- HS QB - Can't crack the two-deep roster. Maybe this year?

Ryan Kessman- HS WR - Faked his own highlights. Last commit BYU didn't evaluate in person or attend a BYU camp. Kicked off the team after lying to Bronco's face.

High drop out rate. Too bad they did not all stay and did not all stay healthy.



What was the class rating and what were the individual star ratings.



STAR L seems to continue the highly touted recruit jinx.

Anae gave us one heck of a game Vs UH or whoever it was before going down.

Braden Brown was OK but short of the hype.

Pendleton woulda coulda shoulda - injuries were sad

Mahina has been marginal

Munns has been a bust so far

JJ was OK but short of the hype



E Manu certainly earned his schollie.

This year is a minor disappointment--I would love to see 4 to 6 5 stars, 10 4 stars, and 10 3 stars every year. But I like winning more than I like Stars, a couple of kids from this class could be Pitta-like.

I think the evaluation should be measured in playing time per scholarship year used. Then correlate for star rating.



Even if a year has people who never show (oronly waste one year on scholarship) it doesn't really matter if they aren't burning a scholarship for four years. Meaning I'd rather have a recruit off the team in one year than warming he bench and burning a scholarship for five years.
