While there have been some disappointing and close finishes, BYU is still 25-14 with 3 bowl wins in the last 3 years. Hard to color that as an overall disappointment. I got to travel to South Bend and Atlanta (and Boise) in 2012 to watch the Cougars play. All three were great games, despite two close losses. Saw two Pac 12 teams, Utah State, and old foe Hawaii in LES. Every game was on tv. I still remember 2008 all too well when UCLA and Utah were the only games on VERSUS. For the other games, I had to LISTEN to the radio broadcasts and "watch" the gametracker online.



In 2013, we get to see Texas, Utah, Boise State, and Georgia Tech in LES. Road trips to history-rich Richmond, Virginia and Madison, Wisconsin (and may be even Houston on the way home from a business trip).



And spring ball is just a few weeks away.

Anae impressed me yesterday, Bronco was his usual self. With a solid Oline, I think we're in good shape. Tough schedule in 2013 for sure, but I like our chances.

Too early to tell. You never know what will happen with injuries, and you don't know how the team will gel, but I am not worried at all.



I'm always excited and optimistic as we start a new year.

Regarding coaches, I do not call it a crisis that we have delays in selection of two offensive position coaches. It was somewhat embarrassing to the late recruiting process. But beyond that, it does not portend any kind of over-all weakness or decline. It appears that most of the delay in the selection of the QB coach was due to BYU's gentlemanly policy of allowing the out-going coach to find their direction before making the announcement. On top of that, the head coach needed to put the coach search on hold in order to finish off the last few weeks before signing day.



I am confident that BYU will get the position coaches that it needs. It will be a good year.

Hard to say until the coaching staff comes into focus.



But all is well, and it's going to get better, baby!

I think we have a better OC. He was fine last time he was here. Experience undwr rwo other coaches and systems should make him even better.



Now I get a bit nervous.



2J seems like he should be adequate at OL. Would rather have Grimes. Never really expected anything like that - realities. But when I hear Anae say he and 2J will coach the OL BAM



Who is going to coach tight ends and who is goibg to groon Atuaia?



I used to get in trouble here asking all season why fans seemed to give Dupaix a pass. I thought he was mediocre at best. Atuaia is totally inexperienced. Hopefully Anae can let 2J coach the OL and Anae can coach the underachieving tight ends and groom Atuaia.



That is who we got so far.



So yes - I will be nervous if Anae gets a QB ciach in need of grooming and a WR coach in need of grooming.



Bronco has his hands full as HC and DC.

Easy Sno... he said IF we hire a wr coach and a qb coach that needed grooming... 2j's has coaching experience but not at this level (at least that i can remember).. so hopefully he doesnt need any grooming...



Bib.. to be fair to you... i liked your assessment.. CC lately feels like the old cougarblue.. clicky.. the realists vs the homers or whatever.. CC was created, i thought, to get away from that.. it is ok to disagree on opinion and not jump all over someone..

Anae’s hiring of Mark Atuaia to coach the BYU running backs was as predictable as the sun coming up the next day. The two are tight; both were stars at Kahuku High School back in their respective days, and Mark has been groomed by Robert for some time now to be a running backs coach.

Sounds like Atuaia has been groomed for a while--he just doesn't have coaching experience during the games.

I wil assume Sno is sincere in his question although I already ansered it. Atuaia is 1 groomee. Anae, in his own words, was quoted in the newspaper as having said that he and 2J will jointly coach the OL. That makes 2J a groomee of sorts. NOt as gree as Atuaia, but apparently requiring some extra attention from Anae to get that job done. There is no TE coach, so Anae will be taking that duty on himself - I speculate. And as PO said, I am hoping we do not take on green WR or QB coaches or 2J like guys, that have experience, but not for that specific role who might take some additonal time.



On top of this - new players - new system - new identity. There is a lot to get done and change managment is hard and takes time and experience.



And - other teams are gearing up for Spring ball right now and we are still tied up looking for coaches and cannot have effective team building sessions until everyone is on board. That will take extra time to catch up.



That is what I meant.

Hmmm...I do see the point. I just don't think it matters too much.



I think that whichever QB and receivers coach heads our way won't be too much of a groomee to any meaningful degree. We may have someone new, it may be someone less tested, but I think that Dr. Anae has it in him to give whatever attention is needed, wherever it is needed. I think he's capable and it will be fine.



I think that the issue of not having the full staff right now/not being able to get geared up for spring ball= not having effective team building sessions is not that meaningful either. This is the time of year that probably matters the least, generally. The real team building sessions occur after spring practice, when the player run meetings happen over the summer, when the team decides to make 2013 special, and everyone is on board following a spring practice from Anae's O and Bronco's D. The whole catch up idea isn't there.



The only item here that I can see that might be nice to have, is having the QB and receivers coach here a little before spring practice so that Anae's plan for the O will get discussed, dissected, and planned out among the offensive staff. As of writing this posting, there's 24 days, 14 hours and change left to spring practice. I think having the full offensive staff in hand with something like 10-14 days before spring ball is just fine. Having a QB or receivers coach come in the day before spring practice would definitely not be good, but Anae and Bronco won't let that happen. Take home message here: we're fine.

Well if that is true - this would have been a mych better time for Bronco to go surfing.



I agree that Anae us capable of grooming any position coach. But there is only one Anae.

During Anae's press conference he alluded to getting the next two coaches (QB and WR) on board prior to Spring Ball. He noted Spring Ball was primarily where they identified those players who could contribute in Fall. Summer was for the players to improve upon the things identified during Spring Ball and to get the team in shape to hit the ground running in Fall. Fall was when players were selected and the offense/defense was tailored to the skill set available with selected starters and backups. Seems to me that there will be heavy evaluation during Spring Ball (especially along the OL, DL and DBs) and the cream will rise to the top during the summer (those truly committed will come to Fall Camp prepared). Last year there was no continuity because of all of the OL injuries during Spring, Fall and throughout the year, and the lack of depth/experience playing together truly hurt the team.

Quotes in the paper indicate the coaching search process will be re-started Monday.
