Tim McTyer's son

I have heard that Tim McTyer's son is a 3* recruit that was just dropped by Cal. Says he has interest to play at BYU, and his dad is pushing him there. He has a Twitter feed.

Tim McTyer was one of the best Db's we have ever had at BYU. If his son is anywhere near as good, we need to get him at BYU.

Cal's new coaching staff dropped him because they didn't think he would qualify academically. But Torrey McTyer is a 3 star WR/CB and would not be a bad thing on the roster. If they can make it work it is certainly worth a conversation I would think.



It sounded like dad Tim was very upset with Cal and their new coaches over this.

If it is about academics I really don't think he could get into Byu. There can't be that much difference between the two schools.

Maybe he goes to Snow for a year and then transfers to Byu ;)

Doesn't he have a 3.7 GPA in HS? It had something to do with his test scores. There's rumors that his offer was pulled to make room for Ragin. Wouldn't that be poetic justice if we get Torry and Ragin goes to Oregon

I have no idea about his GPA, I was referring to the comment above speculating that it was about grades.

UPDATE: Via a source, McTyer is academically qualified to attend Cal. But he is very close to the border, and the coaching staff seems to want to avoid taking on kids who could struggle succeeding academically here. With Cal's APR at perilously low figures the Bears need to right the ship in a hurry.

Which Cal are we taking about; Berkley? Irvine? Los Angeles? :whistle:

If McTyer can qualify, and play for 4 years at BYU, I;d take him in a trade with Cal for Ragin.

BYU can recruit LBs, it is corners we struggle with most. This kid is a legacy Cougar, and has speed and skill. With coaching, he can become a contributor.

His SAT score wasn't high enough for Cal.

He is a 3.7 student

And what I thought was the biggest nugget of Info..Dad is getting his Masters at BYU, so he could attend every home game...Advantage for BYU just went WAYYYYY up.

He is a 2.7 student. His accumulative is 2.7. He raised his GPA to 2.7 by getting a 3.7 as a sr year in order to raise his GPA.

Great point. I think Preston Hadley illustrates this well. I don't think he gets enough credit for a large part of why our d was so good last year. there will be a marked drop off at corner next year without him. He was really good.

Agreed. We need him. BYU rarely gets guys with his size and speed in our defensive secondary. Not sure if BYU will lower its academic standards for him though. I'm pretty sure we have turned guys down with GPA's higer than that before.

Getting a 2.7 comm. by rolling in a 3.7 in your SR year shows me that it was effort not brains. I tried like crazy to be really good grades and the best I could get was 3.4, the fact that he can all of a sudden knock out a 3.7 is huge.

I know Byu won't really care about moral victories when it comes to his grades, but I hope that there is a way for him to qualify academically( otherwise why would BYU be looking at him in the first place)

My fear is that they tell him to go JC and reapply.

It depends on whether he was taking calculus or basket weaving.
