Football Schedules 2014 and beyond

This year's schedule is great. The only problem I have is with the two away games (ND/Wisc). I would have much preferred dropping the whole Wisc series and sliding the Hawaii game earlier in the year. Or buying a game from another team or getting a 2:1.



2014 looks great. 6 home games and 4 away. If I were TH and all I had to think about were 2014 I would buy a couple of cupcakes and go with 8 home games. Unfortunately, I think the best we can hope for would be one FCS team and a 2-for-1. My preference would be to buy a game from Sac St and try to get a 2-1 with SJSU, UTSA, North Texas, Tx St, etc. What I think will happen is TH will sell us out to play an un-neutral site game and a home and away series netting a home game in 2016. Also I see the UCF game the first week of December. The big east won’t have 12 teams until 2015. Also there is a chance UCF will have their one year post-season ban postponed a year to 2014 making this even more likely.



2015 actually works a lot better now that the UH series is gone. 4 (was 5 before UH bailed) away games and 3 home games. Fortunately one of the away games is only an hour away. This year is a shame because the two away games at Nebraska and Michigan are one and dones. This could have marked two great years in a row.



2016 looks bleak. 3 away games and one neutral site 2.5 hours from the other team.



2017-2019 - Too early to tell. One positive is the home game against Nevada as part of a 2-1 deal makes it very silly to go back to the MWC. They would lose the two games they have in their favor going forward (USU and Nev).

I don't know. A schedule full of teams who would give BYU a 2 for 1 deal or FCS games isn't what gets me interested. Yes you put up lots of wins but if wins and poor SOS is what you are after why did BYU ever leave the MWC? Anything farther out than 2015 hasn't really even been planned yet due to the urgency to get the earlier dates finished. And who knows what is going to happen with the conference realignment rumblings still going on. Can't fill dates out too far. Wait and see....

Let me help you. BYU left to get more exposure by gaining control of their TV rights. They got that and money. They also wanted flexibility to play throughout the country instead of locally. They got that but paid a price giving too much advantage in game sites. They got more money. They mirigated the U Pac 12 schtick partially. There were a number of reasons they left. MWC declined making these accomodations. Probably would make them now.

Thanks for the "help". But how much good is it going to do BYU if they play a crappy schedule that doesn't interest ESPN? Sure, you get wins--but I'd rather play a schedule with the SOS as if they were in a big 5 conference (includes some big games against big opponents--even if you lose some of them--just like anyone in a big conference). It shows you are serious about your football and want to compete with the big boys and makes for good TV to show on the national channels. Otherwise you slide back into the "gang of 5 conferences" category of school that is certainly the 2nd tier that people aren't all that interested in. To me 8-4 with a tough schedule is much better than 11-1 with a cupcake schedule. And going forward with the SOS factor in the playoff the "easy" schedules are intentionally not going to be rewarded with playoff berths. Replacing Wisconsin with Hawaii would certainly crater the SOS. Besides, it doesn't sound like Chow wanted any part of the Hawaii series for now until he rebuilds his team some and they are a threat to beat BYU.

Boise State. ESPN loved it. The formula is proven. Nationally ranked playing inferior schedule and livers and haters tune in to watch.



I woukd worry about ESPN interest waning with just another unranked 8-5 team that nibody is talking about - especially if that slips to 7-6 or worse. When nobody is talking about you - nobody but your own fans and opponent fans are interested.



The hater factor brings in everyone. Sells a lot of ads.
