I'm so frustrated

To be honest, some of the guys on scholarship on the BYU basketball team, are not worthy of a scholarship. Some of these guys are really bad.

1. Nate Austin is awful, cannot play at this level, his scholarship should be pulled.

2. Zylstra is also awful, can't shoot, can't defend

3. Kafusi is not a D1 player, good for him for trying, but he belongs on the football field not the hardwoods.

4. To be honest, Davies is not smart enough to play D1, plus he's too slow, can't jump, is a weak rebounder, and disappears against good teams.

5. Harward is also undeserving of a D1 scholarship.

Rose should pull some of these scholarships and go after a couple of post players who can play at this level; Davies will graduate, but I can't imagine how bad we will be with Austin and Harward next year.

Without Haws, this would be one awful team. This team is not going to win the conference, or the tournament, nor are they going to make the NCAA tournament.

What is so frustrating about this team is how dumb they play, Davies is the dumbest of all, Carlino does a lot of dumb stuff, Austin plays dumb. Probably anybody on the Lone Peak high school team is better than everybody but Haws.

San Diego is not a very good team, but BYU should be up by 30 and they are just barely keeping ahead of them.

I find it strange that we have a 15-4 record playing against mostly D-1 schools when we have so few D-1 players on the team (I do, in all seriousness, agree that this is a frustrating team to watch this year. Way too inconsistent).

AND.... you're going to replace these guys with whom?

I don't know what you mean by them not being D1 players. Is it hyperbole or do you actually believe that these players are worse than the 4200 other players that play D1 ball?

Harward has been a disappointment this far. Hopefully Mika is not.

Ya got to face the fact that we recruit great at the 1,2 and 3 but none of our bigs was high on anyone's list. Davis has his limitations and the others are young projects that wouldn't and shouldn't see the floor at most programs for a couple of years. Hopefully Coach Pope will be here for a while. I wish we could bring in at least one solid big each year but that has been a rarity at the Y.

I can't wait for 2 years when Haws is a senior. We should have a very good team then... until then we will be very frustrating to watch.

KY, What gives You so much for in two years? Mika and Hartsock will be on a mission and it does not look like to me like Harward will ever amount to much. Nate Austin is an average four, but is not comfortable at all with his back to the basket.

Going, clearly you are frustrated. What kind of expectations did you have this year? I thought we would come in third in WCC and barely slip into the NCAAs. That's about where we are.

I do think many of our guys are worthy of a DI scholie, but some are not. Harward should have gone Juco. He needs a lot of work.

Zylstra is what he is. Some good, some bad.

Carlino is coming along. Still some struggles.

Sharp is a great hustle kid, but once again, as I predicted, is getting out-muscled in conference play. Love that kid, but he's too lightweight to play the 4. SD went right at him tonight. Fortunately the big dude he was guarding stunk pretty bad offensively.

BUT, The biggest disappointment of this year is Brandon Davies. He is the Riley Nelson of the football team. A Sr who should be doing better and playing smarter. His ego and arrogance has kept him from evolving mentally. Once again he was in foul trouble with a few of them, particularly his first foul--a fricken reach/swipe foul out by center court. The guy just doesn't get it. And this is not his only preventable weakness. To his credit, he is playing hard much of the time, and should be the center of this offense, literally and figuratively but is spending way too much time on the bench when he should be creating a glory year and launching into the NBA. Rosé tried to assert him into the heart of the offense tonight right out of the gates and still he finds a way out. It's too bad. He was doing better. He has worked on his game, but it is rendering not so much fruit.

And as posted, who else is BYU going to get?

This could be a better team, maybe even much better. Bt I still enjoy watching them and cheering our Cougars of BYU.

1. Nate is a 7 foot sophomore... he might not be starter material but he's an asset.

2. I can't stand Zylstras game, but he has been instrumental in a few important wins this season. I'd much rather see more Delgado at the 2 and Ambrosino at the 3 than Brock, but Coach Rose didn't get to 200 wins without knowing his talent.

3. Kaufusi is a freshman and he is absolutely a difference maker with his size and strength. It won't show up on the box score, but by the time this kid is a senior, he will be an all american in football and a difference maker on this hoops team. Think Julius Peppers.

4. Davies isn't just a D1 player, but he's the best center in the WCC and will earn an NBA paycheck as a 4. The guy can get up and down the court with ease. He's just had a bad couple of weeks; ankle hasn't helped.

5. Harward is a 7 foot freshman with length, can get up and down the court and will be an asset by the time he's a senior.

remember when Hartsock was a freshman and soph? people on this board went as far as to call him garbage... have a little patience. freshmen and sophs do improve... unless they're named Chris Miles.

Austin, Kaufusi, and Harward might not ever be solid starters.(though we need one to step up at the 5 next season). but they don't have to be this year... what they do is give depth and length (something many college teams struggle to recruit) What we're missing is one polished post play maker to elevate all these others, by allowing them (except Davies who should be starting) to come in and play spot roles, give effort minutes, and come out, instead of being leaned on to make plays... which is what we're needing when Brandon gets in foul trouble. That should be Jordan Loveridge.... I'll never know what the dude was thinking.

In spite of that we're a 15 win team, a top 40 rpi team, and one miraculous one handed shot from a top 25 rpi with a star on our hands with Tyler Haws.

The future is still very bright.

Thank you for your voice of reason. I find myself getting on this forum less frequently than in the past because it seems to be filled with anti-fans. My definition of an anti-fan is one who can see only the negative side of things, and can't even enjoy it when the team wins.

The negative comments about Zylstra lately can't be supported. He's performed very well in recent games, and had some great plays last night both offensively and defensively. Some of you guys need to learn how to enjoy having a good team and a great coach (200 wins!)

BYU just beat the undefeated - in conference play - first-place WCC team by nearly 20 points with a bunch of players that do not deserve scholarships. BYU is tied for 1st place.

Golong has not been posting for a while - but it seems like this kind of over-the-top criticism is typical.

I would not take the OP too seriously.

Now - if he had said that none of those guys are likely to be playing on Sundays - a little more credible - Davis might or at least European leagues.

Several are way to inexperienced to evaluate.

I guess besides being the eternal optimist and 8) that I am, I see these tall slow young guys becoming not great, not NBA ready, but serviceable D1 Bigs after a couple of years with Pope. Then Haws will be a senior in 2 years and I believe he will be a big time game changer on the same level as Ainge and Jimmer. To me that's worth looking forward to. In the mean time I still hope we can pull in at least one solid, serviceable D1 Big per year instead of a couple of projects like we have been. If we had a stable of them spread across the 4 years, we wouldn't have to try to rely on freshman and sophomores to carry our inside game. Davis would be playing much better if he wasn't trying to carry the load inside and Austin and Sharp just are too young. Anyway that's how I feel about it.

Good reasons. If Carlino and Haws keep getting better, they could be a dynamic duo. If Kyle Collinsworth comes back and can still get to the rim, the three of those along with an improved Wnder could make a great front three. Who knows maybe even little brother, TJ, will grow some muscles and also be a threat off the bench as a freshie.

6' 9"+ NBA caliber bigs don't grow on trees. I feel like we have this discussion every season.

If you are taller than 6'9" and look to possess NBA athleticism you can pretty much have your pick of schools and BYU, even if you are Mormon, probably isn't high on your list.

We make the best with what we have. For the most part, this team is young, even Zylstra is only playing his 2nd season as regular contributor. Davies is the only out there with 2+ years of starting time.

Chris Colinsworth showed promise. He didn't pan out. We lost Rogers. Rose reloaded with what was available to him.

This team is getting better and hopefully will surprise us all.

I buy all of that Gunk gunk, but getting outcoached when your coach has 200 wins is frustrating.

Perhaps the player inexperience is so great - coaching it up is just going to take time.

Maybe basketball is 5th on Rose's priority list.

But inexperienced teams usually do improve which is why Rose said this team had a lot of upside as the season began.

I think there's a combination of the two going on a bit. Rose got out coached against SMC while our guys cleary didn't play a full 40. I saw nothing wrong with our game plan last night nor any signs that San Diego's coach had figured us out; he certainly didn't follow what SMC did against our 2-3 zone. Our guys were playing sloppy against San Diego.

Totally agree, but sloppy, undisciplined play reflects on coaching.

Sloppy and undisciplined play is exactly what you can expect from Freshman and Sophomores, that's why they usually ride the pine. Regardless of the coach...It's rare to get a player that inexperienced to play any different...Just ask Coach Calapari at UK who gets the best talent out there and still has to constantly go over fundamentals with them.

I'm not sure where everyone's expectations were for this season. I think it's amazing we are even in the tourney conversation so I am quite pleased. Face it, w/o Davies and Haws we are not even an NIT team. But that's basketball for you. This is a down year and I still expect us to be in every game for the most part--that's very positive considering who we have in the recruiting pipeline, i.e., Lone Peak HS.

I am excited about The Lone Peakers. Keep in mind, they will play like Freshmen and Sophomores for a couple of years when they get here. And they do not all graduate this year. And there will be missions. There may be some red-shirts due to missionary legs.

In other words - it may be Fall of 2018 before they are here and playing like juniors.

Until then, we need some other answers. Kyle C. Will be a plus. Tyler Haws will be gone before Fall 2015.

BTW - the basketball team is right about where objective fans and experts expected it to be and next year looks to be challenging as well.
