Here's one way to help build fan support and manage modern day fan fickleness.

A tweet from Tim.

Tim LaComb @tlacomb

Great win tonight and another amazing crowd in the MC! Great to have the @byuroc back in full force. Lets keep it rolling. #BYUhoops

I don't know that the crowd was really that "amazing". Average attendance actually. A lot of empty seats. The ROC was pretty good tonight. And I think the end zone student section overall is working out quite nice, notwithstanding I have no idea how they feel about being put in the end zone. But I divert.

Lets see how Coach LaComb tweets after a home loss to the Zags before he gets labeled much better at managing the fickle crowd, but other than Joe Dupaix tweeting its a great day when we get a recruit, I'm not sure I see the football staff "managing" modern media this well. Maybe I'm wrong.

You are. It just is not that simple. Football fans expect perfection. Basket ball fans do not.

Maybe. However, instead of swinging at pitches in the dirt and calling out fans--as if that ever put an end to the critical crowd or fickle fans, he could employ more positives, like, "love the fans--they are so important to our success; or "great crowd, we love our fans;" likewise, not take so personally the negatives that come out. If nothing else, read up on some of Phil Jackson's karma books and realize that a coach draws out from fans and boosters the things he likes least about them.

Not that I am the model of positivity, but certainly it could help Bronco stick around a little longer than go out as though all of Cougar Nation has stabbed him in the back. You won't see the Urban Meyers pf the football world lose the PR battle. Didnt see LaVel lose it either. I don't like UM, per se, but be real Bronco. The moment he got real after the GT game, he started to divert the tide of criticism. He doesn't have to disparage his players to be honest. There is a happy medium. I hope he continues to find it.

Cougs_Rule is right on this one.

Nothing but love for the fans should be coming out of Coaches' and players' mouths. Bronco doesn't do a good job of this.

It would be one thing if BYU was rolling and cracking the BCS then fans would tolerate a little backlash from the coach. But football took a turn for the worse and has squandered opportunities recently. So a mole-hill of criticism from the coach is turned into a moutain.

Regarding Bib's claim basketball fans are more empathetic to losses, that's partly true. In the course of a basketball season there are more than twice as many games than football. Even the best basketball teams in the country lose games. Since the start of NCAA basketball, only 9 D1 schools have gone undefeated.

Also, to get to the tournement and play on a national stage in basketball, perfection is not required. In football, the only shot BYU has at cracking the BCS and competing on a national level is to go undefeated. So, the moment we lose a game our hopes of a BCS bowl go out the window. Throw in the fact Utah, Boise, TCU and even lowly Hawaii have accomplished perfect seasons while BYU has faltered and it's like salt to a wound. Especially given how much better we think our program is.

I'd be perfectly happy if no BYU coaches or players were on twitter or facebook. But you can't stop technology, so I wish the coaches had student interns that tweeted a bunch of BS happy thoughts, because it would be better for their reputation and for fan relations.

And therein lies the problem. We think our football program is better than TCU, BSU, and U. We expect to beat them every year - unrealistic.

And yet we can suffer blowout losses to unranked teams, inability to win The WCC Championship, rarely win MWC championship and only hear minimal grumbling.

BYU basketball has not cracked Final Four. Utah did. Utah has been there more than once.

So Gunk - are you content to have U show more basketball success. Nobody seems to give a rats hiny.

And BTW Cougs Rule - LaVell Edwards lost the PR battle badly when he stRted playing tougher schedules and losing more games.

Problem is though, Bronco's comments come during interviews with the press. I could care less whether he was on Twitter or not.

Yeah, I wish Bronco had the ability to speak to large groups of people and the press like he does one on one. Drives me crazy sometimes.

I thought that's what GAs were for!

Actually, it's a good idea. If Bronco and co. aren't going to do it, SID or the Athletic Department should get an intern to do so.

What about Hawaii? ;)

In the last few years TCU and BSU certainly have better programs than us. Utah could be debated. Bottomline, we're not as good as we hope or want to be. Some are okay with that. We are what we are. Many aren't. So when a coach grumbles a bit about fans, it stings.

Lot's of good teams in hoops suffer blow out losses to unranked teams. Go ask Duke about Lehigh. Not a blowout but who ever expected or thought Lehigh could even compete with Duke.

We just started our 2nd season of WCC play and already you're complaining about not winning it? :skeptic:

As far as MWC goes, between 2000 and 2011, BYU won 6 regular season MWC titles. Six out of 11 years. How is that "rarely"?

Fully admit from a historical perspective Utah has the better team. No question. In the last 10 years, though, BYU basketball has done better than Utah. We're on the rise, while they're attempting to rebuild. Last time we lost to Utah in basketball was 2009 in overtime at Utah. Last time we lost to Utah on our home court, 2005. Can't be said for football.

Cougarbib wrote:

For the record Utah has 26 NCAA tournament appearences while BYU has 27. Utah has never produced a NPOY. BYU has produced 2. The last time Utah won a game in the NCAA tournament was 2005. BYU won one last year. Last time Utah was in the tournament was 2009. BYU was there last year.

In the last 10 years, Utah has made it to the NCAA tournament 5 times. BYU has made it 8 times and is currently on a 6 year streak, which ranks 9th in the nation. One of the schools ahead of us is Gonzaga with 14 consecutive appearences. Will likely by 15 after this year, while our appearance is suspect this season. Some noteworthy schools behind us include Lousiville, Kansas State, and Georgetown.

I'm more concerned with Gonzaga than I am with Utah, though, I suppose if Utah were to suddenly become competitive it would hurt recruiting. But, in the last 10 years and certainly in the last 5, Utah doesn't have much on us.

Hawaii sucks. Broken Record Time: If BYU played the schedule that UH played that year, BYU would go undefeated at least every other year. If BYU played the schedule BSU played we would be undefeated about every 3 or 4 years. But BYU plays a much tougher schedule so we never go undefeated since stepping up that schedule in 1985.

When Duke gets blown out 4 times out of about 4 road games vs decent, but unranked teams in a row - let me know.

BYU basketball is not on the rise. It peaked or blipped up two yesrs ago with Jimmer and has deckined since.

U, on the other hand, is on the rise, surprising people, new coach may be legit. Not quite up to us yet thus year but nipping at us abd definitet rising vs last year.

Too early to say they've declined since Jimmer IMO. Any team losing a NPOY is bound to struggle...but to win 25+ games including an NCAA tourny game in a brand new conference? I'd say that's pretty solid season.

Utah is 8-7 and 0-3 in the Pac-12. Too early to say they're really on the rise IMO. It'd be hard for any team to NOT improve after a 6-25 season.

Also I wouldn't call a 10 point loss to a ranked ND team a blowout. Just my opinions

My point exactly. BYU BB can lose to ND by 10 in a tournament - nody bats an eye. But lose to Top 5 and undefeated ND by 3 in Southbend on the road in football - and fans are still trying to figure out who to castrate.

Utah on the rise? Just about anything would be an improvement from where the've been in the last few season.

As BYU's success being just a blip, that's still TBD and given the recruits they're signing it looks as though another "blip" is coming around the corner.

Maybe fans are more lenient on bball because the coaching staff hasn't talked about competing for national championships without coming close.

Exactly

Basketball fans don't expect more than a first round appearance and will not complain much if they occasionally fall short of that.

Ever since 1984, football fans expect an undefeated season regardless of the coach or level of competition and even had a hard time tolerating 11-2, 11-2, 10-3, 11-2 in foorball and chastise other fans that are willing to accept that.

Maybe he was referring to the conference tournament championship, which Coach Rose never won.

Every game matters if you care about tournament selection committee seeding processes and national polls. Thinking there is such a thinf as a game that does not matter is step one to establishing a losing culture.

If you win the conference tourney, you're automatically in. If you win the regular season title, you get nothing.
