What Will Be Anae's Priorities

I believe we will see a re-focus on the things that have been our primary weaknesses:



1. Lack of physicality with OL (AZ's OL produced a great running attack and a number 7 ranked offense).

2. Return of the TE as a primary weapon.

3. Use of a bruising RB with pass catching responsibilities.



I exepct that what he learned at AZ will be integrated into the offense. Not sure who he will select on the O staff (as Bronco has said he has the opportunity to select coaches). Rumors about Atuaia coming on board...Dupaix, Doman and Cahoon retained?????



As for personality issues - despite previous allegations of being difficult to get along with - he was beloved by the players at AZ who lobbied to retain him when Rich Rodgriguez was brought on after Stoops. Seems like some growth has occurred, and he has learned from his experiences.



Definite Poly feel to the entire hiring which seems to be a big push by BYU and Vai S. Could result in some additional improvements in recruiting talent.

Predictability of his O will not be a problem if no one can stop us - i.e. see ND, AL running game. Note: I am not equating our offense to these two teams, but stating if we get good TD production from his "shotgun - spread offense", we will all be happy. Don't think Nick Fowles (AZ QB) is better than T. Hill as are the WRs. If we develop an OL to block for the RB, we could be a dangerous, dual threat team.



The fact that the D felt like they had to bail out the offense the last couple of years grew tiring. Hopefully, Anae gets the O to the level of the D. If Doman does stay, he will be a good influence on the QB as history has shown (he also prefers to be on the sidelines, while Anae is much more comfortable in the booth).

1. HIs top priority will be to get the staff that he wants, not what is dictated to him--which is an assumption I am making that he was told originally, that Reynolds was the Asst HC and of course he couldn't/wouldn't work with the D so he was going to be with the O. Who had more authority? Reynolds or Anae?

2. Be the clear OC with only BM to answer to.



I have heard, such as the reliability is, that this was the condition for his return. It certainly makes sense. I do believe that he was approached but that is a total guess.

Is Reynolds still on staff?



1 - Improved O-line play is a must but do we currently have talented enough players where Anae can make a difference with them? Too bad Famika Anae had to hang up the cleats.

2 - Our TE's suck. Who's going to be able to take a step forward there?

3 - How does the return of the power run game affect more finesse guys like Williams and Hine? Will Williams take a back seat to Alisa because Williams isn't your typical downhill RB? I Sure hope not.



There are a lot of questions that will take a while to be answered

All of those are things Doman failed to do. Each of those cost BYU wins this season. Any of them are rating can struggle mightily.

No, Reynolds is done. I'm just making the point that solidarity among the staff was probably a huge issue in 2010.

Two successful things accomplished at AZ the last two years that I believe he will definitely try to duplicate at the Y:



1. Creating a an o-line for a top15 offense

2. Developing a top 25 offense



Let's hope that he has the autonomy to select the staff he needs to run his offense.

Question: can Doman execute on improving his stable of QBs in this arena. If not, he can't be allowed to stay.



I like Doman, I think he represents the BYU brand well and has been a good recruiter. That said, he needs to prove it with his product on the field. It's been a train wreck since Hall graduated. Maybe train wreck is too strong, but it hasn't been smooth or efficient any of the other things Spiff listed above.

Anae may have the authority to pick his own staff, but face it folks, he has two big challenges in getting it done:



1. Tiny Budget



2. He was not OC at AZ, and thus can't just bring his AZ staff, and even if he had been, SEE #1

3. Making sure the QB does not get killed.

Expected, since Anae is also the Oline coach.



Word is that some other coaches have already interviewed, like DuPaix, and Cahoon might be tomorrow. Doman has an offer to stay(at TH's request), but is at the coaches convention now networking, so he could leave if he finds an offer he likes.

Yep, they go hand in hand.



I've got 310 games where BYU QBs have attempted 15 passes (seemed like a nice round number to reach a decent data set and avoid any backup coming in in garbage time and racking up some numbers).



In the 191 games where they met the 135 Standard, in 28 only of them did the QB fail to complete 60% of his passes.

Presser makes him sound like a very solid and experienced coach. He landed squarely on his feet and quickly.



BYU - with Anae covering OL should be fine.

We had at least two open slots to be filled with a new hire. Those slots would be to replace Reynolds who retired and Weber who left to become assistant head coach at Utah State. Anae counts as one of those. Rumor has it that Mark Atuaia will fill the other slot. If Doman leaves rather than accept a demotion, assuming he has any choice in the matter, that would create another opening. If Dupaix or Cahoon leave or are let go - two more openings. Much is likely to clear up next week after the national coaches meetings.

It sure would be nice if we could get Detmer on as the QB/Assistant OC coach so that he could take over as OC if/when Anae was ever given the HC job at BYU.
