Why the heck does our perimeter defense continue to suck so bad.......can't see the game right now but is Zylstra a big part of the problem?? Pangos is going to kill us when we play Gonzaga

Davies playing like a moron and now has 3 fouls in the first half - Is it the Refs being morons??

Zylstra and Sharp are the only reason this game isn't a blowout for USF so far.

Haws, Davies, and everyone else really sucking.

What triggered the comeback - I saw BYU leading with under 5 minutes left.

Travelling and my new phone learning curve is not resulting in KSL Internet Radio bliss.

Sharp getting rebounds. Haws slashing to the basket for layups. SF went cold. Their PG Doolan was killing us until Sharp was put on him and then he missed his layup attempts. Our guards got key defense rebounds so we won even though Haws missed two one and one free throws.

Come back triggered by Sharp fighting for offensive rebounds, Carlino and Haws attacking the hoop and Cusick and Zylstra hitting big shots.

In the first half we kept switching on a PG/PF pick and roll. So their 4 goes in the post and we double. Their 4 hits somebody for an open 3. Rinse and repeat.

In the second half we really increased our ball pressure and Haws stopped taking so many jumpers and focused on getting to the rim.

The big run was when we went to a trapping zone D. I think it was a 1-3-1.

Their best player Doolan (point guard) just got worn out. He started to missed some shots he normally hits. Haws and Carlino missed free throws because they had played the entire 2nd half.

Sharp, Carlino and Haws did most of the work tonight. Davies was a disaster-foul trouble and forcing bad shots.

On the last couple of possessions Sharp guarded their PG on a clear out. He stayed in front of him and challenged the shots. I think when/if he ever gets a 3 point shot he will become a good option at the 3.

As near as I can tell - BYU won a close one that should not have been close.

Thanks for the summaries.

Carlino's defense triggered rally. Guy had 5 steals, 22 boards and a few key rebounds. While Haws and Cusick missed key free throws down the stretch, Carlino closed the Dons out.

Couldn't have won the game without Sharp, his 10 boards (6 offensive, I think). Rose made some key adjustments, particularly having Sharp guard Doolin down the stretch. Doolin couldn't shoot over Sharp's length, Cusick and Carlino pulled down the boards.

Zylstra was critical with 16 points. Was nice to seem him play. Took Haws a bit to warm up, but once he did he chipped in 22 points. Haws was strangely horrible from the line.

Great thing about this win was it was done with Davies on the bench for about 30 min of the game. Not that Davies in foul trouble is a good thing, but the fact we were able to pull off a win with him on the bench was promising.

Refs were horrible.

In any given year the Dons on their home court can be trouble. Go ask SMC. I'm glad we got that one out of the way.

Dons shot 70% from the 3 point line in the first half. That's hard to overcome, particularly when your best player is sitting on the bench due to phantom fouls. Credit Walters with putting together a solid game plan for beating BYU's zone. And, credit Rose for countering in the 2nd half.

Dons won 20 games last season. Yes, they lost just about everyone, but Walters has reloaded with some nice, young talent.

Carlino was solid again. I have to say that Zylstra surprised me. If he is willing to keep taking it hard to the rack like that then keep giving him minutes because that was just what we needed. Props to the team for playing more aggressive and getting away from our perennially fatal 3 point shooting love fest. This is the first game I can remember in years where we repeatedly went to the hole to get back into a game.

I liked it too. Haws, Zylstra and Carlino took it hard to the rack. We need some more of that.
