My guess is that it is difficult to even schedule 15 practices when the game is on December 20 and the players have to fit in final exams. If BYU was playing a bowl game in January, or even December 29, 30, or 31, BYU would have more time to schedule and hold practices. But this is only a guess; no inside knowledge.
BYU should do a deal with the Las Vegas bowl and convince the bowl to move to New Year's Eve. I know flights and hotel room prices triple as compared to December 20-22, but the bowl would likely get more viewers and could afford the extra expenses and a bigger payout. Or the team could stay with members. (TIC)
