Define Booster

How would I even know if I am a booster. May matter when it comes to recruiting violations. But that is not what this thread is all about.



Lawboy says he is a booster and frequently by his posts gives the impression that he has contacts with significant influence over BYU athletics.



Gucci33 seems to think he speaks for the boosters but cannot type complete sentences with correct grammar. Ironically, I had to go back and correct a typo in that last sentence. Old age - bad eyes - small screen - red neck upbringing - IDK. Ha Ha.



The Bibster does not consider himself to be a booster although he is a season ticket holder for about three decades and counting. But how would I know.



Oregon has a booster - for sure. He gets what he wants done - DONE.



Okie State has one of those Boosters that expects to call all of the shots.



IE - you have your Billionare boosters and you have your boosters and you have your wanna be boosters.



For those of you on the INSIDE of BYU booster circles - who, if anyone, is the billionaire booster for the cougars. Failing a T Boone Pickens or Nike Founder - who donates so much money that he cannot be ignored?



It just does not seem that BYU has a super booster. But, not being a billionaire myself, even though I have met several and family members of others - it seems like U would have more mega donors - unless the BYU ones just keep a very low profile.



Sure Mariotts contribute big bucks to BYU - but also to U of Utah. The Mariott Center was a highly visible athletics donation back in about 1970 - plus the B School plus the U of U library - I just do not see them as having the style of trying to dictate to The AD Office.



Earl Holding heads a loaded LDS family. Grand America, Little America, Sinclair Oil, Sun Valley, etc. I knew his daughter Anne when I was an MBA Student and she was an undergraduate student - At the U. But I do not recall seeing the Holding nose in U athletics.



And of course John Huntsman had a brother teaching Finance classes in the U MBA program. And the Huntsman Center. And the Cancer Clinic. That seems to fall to the U.



Sorensen - recently deceased - where does that family align themselves? I did some consulting for their business in about 1970.



Spence Eccles - clearly aligned with U.



Robert Rice - not as loaded as he once was. My wife grew up in his ward. Olympus Cove - back in the day. Of course she lived in the low rent district of that ward.



I know I am probably leaving some powerful Utah family off this list since I have not lived there for so long.



Dropping down several notches - Firmage - solidly U.



Anyway SLC is filled with business owners.



Bennion - just met him at the BYU @ U tailgate. Clearly in the Ute camp.



Back up the ladder - The late Larry Miller? Where does that family align?



Back down the ladder - Losee - IDK. I went to high school with the wife of the Losee Heir. They have a mansion over lookinf Deer Creek Resevour. Her little sister was tragically killed by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve near Park City as a junior in High School. Everyone loved her.



Si for these BYU Boosters, who are we talking about Gucci? Lawboy?



That have the clout to make demands?

Nuskin - well the guy who bought my dad's land in Duchesne that was in the middle of two parcels he owned sure was loaded.



7 Habits - deceased - but family still has ties. Is it Sean Covey down their calling for Bronco to be replaced by Andy Reid - or by anyone else?



Who are the BYU Big Money Boosters? Inquiring minds want to know.



And let them know that The Bibster thinks an 85,000 seat stadium with luxury boxes would be a nice gesture. Then if they want to name it Andy Reid Stadium - no argument here.

We "help" pay for coaches to get us to the next level depending on what BYU can or will pay. If you treated your boss they way Bronco treats us you would not have a job I can promise you that. Many believe a NFL obviously lds coach like Reid could get us to the BCS. If I'm a recruit I would much rather play for a coach that has NFL experience then one that does not. But you're not Bronco's boss. He does not report to you. You may contribute greatly to his salary, but you don't have a controlling stake in the program. Because if you did, YOU'RE the one who is failing the program because YOUR program is the one not getting to the next level.

So if that NFL coach came in and screwed everything up, would the recruits keep coming? Wasn't Crowton an NFL coach? What did his recruits do? I seem to remember about 8 players in 03 and 04 get booted out of school for some of the most embarrassing behavior we have ever had at BYU. Bronco is running a clean program. All the crybabies that seem to think they control BYU football because they donate a couple of bucks a year to the program need to grow up.

So Gucci - since you consider your self significant enough to have a say in the matter - who are you and dad, how much do you cough up each year - and why are you making anonymous posts instead of out their standing up for what you believe and making your thoughts on the matter known.

So, the fall of 2011 a lot of folks in NFL circles thought that the eagles had the most talent in the NFL, and that team didn't even make the playoffs. Did Reid do a lot with that talent? Just asking.

This is not how boosters behave. Back east, a year ago, a wealthy booster did not approve of a coaching change and was miffed that he was not consulted - and publicly demanded a refund of a Multi-million donation. It all eventually got smoothed over - but big boosters do not hide behind anonymous posts. They let their expectations be known.



You need to learn how to spot an obvious fraud or you could end up in an imaginary BubbleBath scandal.

Oh believe me TH knows us and knows our concerns. I don't post on this forum often I was just excited that BD was relieved of his duties and the potential of who will replace him. I don't consider myself anything special just someone who greatly helps with the BYU football program financially. And TH knows you want our contribution be ready to deal with our concerns.

So you just don't care that you come across as a know-nothing, backwater, piece of garbage? When I see somebody who writes like you do, it tells me one of three things:

1. This is a 15-year-old kid

2. This guy has the mentality of a 15-year-old kid

3. This guy doesn't care enough about what he's writing to make it understandable, so I definitely shouldn't care about what he has to say.



So, which one is it?

Problem is, you've defined yourself a a type of booster that does not exist at BYU. You say you only support football, but that you help pay Bronco's salary. The only vehicle for boosters to help pay Bronco's salary is to join the Coaches Circle. However, there is no way to designate your donation as football only. If you are a Coaches Circle member, you are a supporter of the entire athletic department.



If you don't understand how Coaches Circle functions, i doubt you are contributing.

Then it's pretty clear Daddy hasn't informed to of how the family business really works. So why don't you go ask him how things work and just keep doing off like you have any clue what is going on. It's clear whatever money your family contributes very little, if any, comes from you. Go make your own name for yourself.

So I'm late to all this but could someone explain to me why all the dislike for Gucci33? Also no one has really answered the original question. Who is the big money contributer for the program.

I don't post often, so please forgive me if I am out of line here. But, I have a few questions. These questions are specifically at Gucci33, but if anyone else has answers, please feel free to respond.



1. When was it announced that BD was relieved of his duties?



2. For your family to have that kind of influence in BYU athetics, you would need to have given contributions of over $8-10M since the stadium expanision (+/- 250 to 300k per year). There are not many of you out there, but you are out there. I feel that I can speak intelligently on this issue because I am very close to 2 families that have given that kind of money that don't have that kind of access to TH. But, I have been to several none BYU events where BYU players (former), coaches or BYU VP's will come up to my group and address members of my group on a first name basis. So, I understand that they do have a close relationship to individuals who show great support of the program. After reading these posts, I did some follow up to those who do attend booster gatherings. I was told that in the last 30 years, nobody in any sport at BYU can bring the charisma that Lavell brought. He was one in a million. I was told that if "boosters" were uptight with the way they have been treated that these 2 independent people have not felt it. But, one also feels that Lavell was irreplaceable not because of Lavell, but because of the landscape of college athletics. So my question is, if you have given so much to the organization, what has been specifically said to YOU that you don't think gave you the proper respect?



3. Last, when I was in school, I had the opportunity to work with a prospective donor that wanted to give over $10M. He had a certain way that he wanted to have the money spent. There was a potential to have this gift grow significantly. This donor wasn't asking to have his name on anything, but was certainly looking to have his donations create a legacy, not just a flash in the pan. He was told by the school president that donors, in general, just like fast offerings should not have any significant demands on how the money is spent. It was not quite that blunt, but pretty close. He was told this was direction from the BOT. Now, another school has some really nice facilities and we have a $3M consolation prize. In your experience, are athletic boosters treated differently? Should they be treated differently?

I always find it hilarious when people on forums resort to criticizing grammar. Especially when they don't have any arguments or counter points. Criticizing grammar never fails to one feel "better" than the other on an Internet forum.



Regarding boosters, I am sure BYU treats their boosters differently and vice versus. I'm BYU views donnations from boosters mote like tithing or fast offerings where the money is given and the donor isn't to ask questions on how or where it's used. I'm sure in some cases money from boosters is asked/compelled for on specific things.
