Speaking of Staying

BSU is staying in the MWC and the MWC is purported to be helping BSU pay the $10M exit fee. They never really entered - ala TCU - but they pay the exit fee. BEAST doubled the exit fee to $10M after TCU bolted.

Kind of like paying the parking attendant at a garage you never used.

SDSU apparently has a clause in their contract that waives any exit fee if the Big East does not have another team west of the Rockies. Maybe BEAST can grab Idaho or Idaho state real quick and close that loophole.



MWC plans to go to at least 12 members with SDSU leading the list of possible additions, but will also look at SMU, Houston, and UTEP. Loss of SMU or Houston would further weaken The BEAST.



Navy is also rumored to be having 2nd thoughts. They said they will take a hard look at what remains standing before deciding whether to join The Beast in 2015.

Looks like those schools are using the Big East as a stepping stone to join the next best conference. Unfortunately for them, it's the conference they just left, so the Donkeys just cost themselves at least $5 million for no benefit.

Think of it as buying an option. When things are shifting by the moment - having options is better than not having options. This option could cost them anywhere between nothing and $10M depending on what the MWC coughs up.



Nothing is forever. You are either in the club or out of it. BSU and BYU remain on the outside looking in although either school deserves to be in the club.



Independence gives BYU flexibility and options. Hopefully our ship will come in or scheduling and bowl tie situations will improve making Independence a great place to be.

The article I read said neither BEAST nor MWC was willing to let BSU reserve rights to home games. I do not think they got that concession.

I just saw a tweet that stated something from the announcement teleconference - that was a bit vague - but you may be right. They apparently did get some kind of concession.

It appears that BSU got their home television rights, which is absolutely crazy, but it's obvious that Thompson learned a lesson from having BYU bail on them and losing all of their value. Sometimes it's wise to make a concession for the overall good.

Remember how "back then" BYU was the evil guy? I don't know if this is Hair's doing or the conference members allowing that concession to BSU. There was a lot of pent up anger at BYU at that time, and conference members were not too keen on giving BYU anything if I recall. Another reason that I think Independence is the best option for BYU going forward.

In addition to their Home TV rights, they got the MWC to back off of their stupid "No blue on blue on blue" policy, giving BSU the ability to wear what they want for home football games. BSU learned the hard way what BYU learned the hard way, namely that that "old MWC" does not like to have a top dog, and wil go out of its way to beat that top dog down, from scheduling issues, to micromanaginng thier uniforms. It's no wonder BSU bolted, and also no wonder thant they also included those issues into their agreement to come back.



To lure BYU back, BYU may be given certain concessions to return, but I don't see any benefit to returning yet. I'm loving our WCC affiliation. The only good thing I see in this BSU development is the simmering down of hard feelings between the other schools and BSU, which means that there may be some of the same from the other schools and BYU - resulting in the ability to use MWC schools to more fill out our schedule.

Don't go back. Look at our schedule the next couple years; it's much cooler than anything we saw when playing in the MWC.

Agreed, I'd take 8-5 with this schedule and an occasional season of lightening in a bottle than 10-2 in the MWC consistently.

The MWC was 12th, that is TWELFTH, conference. And that is with BSU and SDSU. 60% of their teams were triple digit rpi. Football, they are a diaster. Big East would be better.

I'd go back to the MWC in football only. My only stipulation on going back to the MWC would be very simple.

I would go back just for basketball.

If we played 8 per year - all late in the year like everybody else - the OOC opponents who do not come late in the season could come in Sept. And if we only had to round up 4 per year - maybe we could get 2 home and 2 away OOC with decent to great teams. Utah, other PAC, ND, Texas, other Big 12, ACC once in a while.



In conference, MWC always seems to have a top 3 and a middle 3 or so and some dregs.



So 4 OOC Vs decent teams, 2 top MWC, 3 middle MWC, and 3 dregs.



BAM. Plus the NC game.

This year they had 6 dregs and 3 decent and 1 good team.

I will probably be in the minority around here , but I like being in a conference and I would not be opposed to that conference being the MWC. I like the idea of an annual end of season rivalry with Boise State, regional rivalries, a conference championship game with probable access to a BCS game if you win it, along with 3-4 OOC games with teams of the likes we have scheduled with Indy. Figure out the TV/BYUTV part of the equation and get it done. As for being a big hoops fan, I drive down from Idaho 3-4 times a winter to catch the Cougs in action in the MC. I will be there Thursday for LMU, but in all reality it pales in comparison to the days of rockin' the MC to the likes of UNLV, SDSU, and UNM.
