Running into the Wind

This may be a thread that turns into a blog of my thoughts on Bronco and BYU Football based on my Christmas Present book from my wife. I will try to post thoughtful ideas and insights without infringing on copyright and I would love additional thoughts and input from any of you whether you have read the book or not.



First thought: I am only 1/3 through the book, barely out of the 2005 season so my opinions may change but we have a great man as our head football coach! Bronco describes his interview with Elder Eyring as basically Bronco sharing his testimony with Elder Eyring (at Elder Eyring's request obviously) and then Elder Eyring saying, "well then, you're our man." And Bronco saying he took the question as "the closest thing to direction he would ever receive from the Church, the university, or the athletic department." And that being one of the main reasons he puts such focus on priority number one: Faith.



My only wish is that my son's (all 3) were big enough and skilled enough to be offered a scholarship to play football at BYU and that Bronco would be there long enough to coach them the full 4 years plus time they were on their missions. But alas, we are all skinny of dwarfish who play soccer or swim.

Hey - your kids may not have the football physique. But, you could buy each of them a Harley, so they could spend quality time cruising with Bronco. They'd probably get some quality time commiserating, while sipping a tall cool lemonade at the rest stop. ;)

Teach them to play running back and throw a little catch with them in the back yard. And above all teach them to have ggggggrrrrrr....I wont say it. But at any rate, Bronco likes those kind of players.

Notwithstanding, yes, Bronco has a lot of those admirable traits. But there is a convergence in the future if he continues trending toward an underperforming, under-prepared offense: All those admirable traits will seem to have less importance. Likewise, if he keeps favoring gritty leaders over talent, he wil also tank, unless BYU gets back in the MWC.

Hasn't it already been proven that the "talent" that he wasn't choosing over grit wasn't any more talented than the grit? Or are we forgetting about the last game completely?

I actually like grits, unlike a good Number of people. I just prefer my grits to not be burned, broken and full of pain-reducing, hallucinogenic additives, that often lead to pick-sixes.

"Shown" would have been a better word choice than “proven”, but that’s just nit picking… I agree with Hawk on this.

Also, although many people detest instant grits, I don't I even like cheese instant grits, but that makes me a heretic, I believe....

I remember, but still thought Lark played better than Riley in the last game.

Does it matter? Maybe he realized what was important and decided that instead of running WITH the wind, more in life could be gained by running INTO it?

I'm just gonna take a shot in the dark without having read the book, but if a ho-hum member got a new job where they interviewed with a member of the First Presidency and were told about the emphasis that should be put on spirituality, wouldn't any sane, believing person change, just a little? (stop being an asshole and read the book if you're so curious)

If I had to interview with any of the 12 for $15,000 a year, it still would affect the way I lived my life or at least the way I approached my job.

Interesting story about Shaun Nua Defensive Lineman (2002-04). He actually hid during a pursuit drill but was called in to Bronco's office the next day saying he was caught on a camera at practice hiding during the drill. He said Bronco told him he "wouldn't play on his [Bronco's] defense." Adding, Bronco didn't care if it was his senior year or not saying, "I don't really care. I think you're very athletic, but you find your way out of drills. You're kind of lazy at times. I'd rather play kids that go all out."



I wonder if we fans miss things that happen in practice and would rather have the more talented half hearted practice player in the game than the whole-hearted practice player but half talented player in the game. I don't know if that makes sense but I think you know where I'm going with the thought. Honestly, having been one of those harder working but less talented players on my HS Soccer team, I'm grateful to a coach who put me in and rewarded me for my effort when not in the spotlight (albeit a pretty small spotlight as soccer is wont to be) ;) My gut says, good for Bronco for trying to instill hard work ethic in the players and allowing them to be in the game. My brain says it cost us some on the field victories and frustrated the daylights out of me.

As far as SDSU's defense is concerned, they are a pretty good defense, and Nelson would have made bigger mistakes than Lark.



Anyway, back to the thread at hand, people change for a variety of reasons. Many people who were not good people, or are divorced, or less active in the church, become excellent human beings and members of the church.



Mendenhall wouldn't be the first BYU head coach to become more active in the church when he comes to BYU. Roger Reid did the same thing. Strangely, I see many similarities between Mendenhall and Reid.

I'm guessing that you're his Bishop. How else could you know his "activity / faith". Here is a simple question. How do YOU quantify faith, and how have you determined that Beonco's "faith" increased after it became relevant to his coaching career? My guess is you'll convieniently not see this question....

Hawkwing, I was wondering if you could do everyone a favor with this thread and delete ahole153's posts from it. His character assassination of Bronco not only derails the intent of the thread but it is pure trolling. There is no reason to let it stand. Thanks in advance.
