This article on espn discusses the best coaches jobs in College and the NFL. Aside from the interesting teams they discuss as the best coaching destinations I was blown away by some of the $$$ #s.

The Texas Longhorns are worth more than 3 NFL teams. Wow. That's a crazy amount of money. It's not quite a billion but its close.

I know historically the Cougs have played very well against the Longhorns. And I'm one of those fans that thinks BYU in a good season can play with anybody in the country. Even with 2 losses I felt the Cougs in Beck's final bowl game could have won any BCS game rather than being relegated to taking Oregon behind the shed 38-8 in Vegas.

But over the long haul if BYU is lucky enough to get a big12 invite, can the program compete with a team year in and year out that spends in one year on football what the Cougs spent in the entire Lavell era?

Personally I think absolutely YES. But it'd take about 8 years for BYU to raise the bar sufficiently to become consistently dominant.

Tough to say. Even Baylor has become legit in that conference. As long as we were in the North division then yeah we'd compete pretty well.

With our current coaching staff, no we would not be able to compete. We are too one sided as a team. Get a legit OC and we'd have a legit shot. Player talent level is what if is at BYU. I don't see that going up much. Coaching and game planning has no ceiling.

Sorry don't mean to troll, but I had to respond to this.

Of course you can. Take a look at K-State. They've absolutely dominated us in football. So much so that a lot of Texas fans have begun to chalk that game up as a loss in preseason.

Texas is worth a fortune, but I'm afraid that Dodds has done less with more ($$$) than anyone else in the country. He's brought in the $$$ but that hasn't equated to the dominance that you would expect.

Ok here is a quick and dirty estimate.

Take BYus best years, 83,84,85,89, 96, 01,06,09 and BYU competes in the Big 12 North and maybe makes it to the Big 12 champ game. Thats 8 out of 30 years--and some of those years are maybes. Less than 30%--I would say more realistically 1 in 4 chance.

Take its very best years, 84 and 96 and maybe it wins the Big 12 depending on what other teams are doing well. That's two legit shots out of 30 years for a legit shot at answering this thread in the confident affirmative. Not good enough for me. And not worth all the heart ache of seeing subpar teams, the last three years having 3-9, 4-8, and 5-7 seasons. BYU would miss bowl games for the past three years. That is unacceptable to me. AND NO, BYU couldn't compete the past three years on any level except broadcast capability.

The problem with the estimate, Cougs_Rule, is that you can't simply make that evaluation in a vacuum. You'd have increased exposure and money from being in the conference the last 30 years to help bring recruits and build the program. I'd say a team on WAC funds and exposure making a third of Big XII championship games would be pretty darn impressive.

They could compete but not on the level some think they should. Winning record most year yes winning big12 championships no. Look at Arizona and Arizona State they have been in the PAC12 for over 30 years and have never won a championship. The Utes struggles should be an eye opener for all of us. To think BYU could go in without struggles is insain. But the chance to be in the Big 12 to me is worth it. If a winning record is all that matters then screw it lets go back to the MWC or Conference USA or someother low level conference. BYU will get better when they get the better LDS recruits who choose to go to other schools because they want to play in the PAC12 or the BIG12 . When BYU can get these kids on a regular basis then the team will be able to compete on a level that would be more satisfying. But it could realisticlly take a decade to achieve those levels.

I honestly do not care. I just want the opportunity. As of right now, that margin of error is far too slim (top-4 or bust). Being in a top league, you can be top 2 in the league and grab the brass ring.

Realistically, BYU could expect it to happen once every 7 years or so in a B12 type league. However, even if hte season is not special, it can still be very good in other years, like Baylor had this year, or like UCLA had in the PAC12. In a league, you do not have towin it to earn respect. The options are better for bowls too.

How many top LDS athletes is BYU missing on? Lets make a list of the top athletes currently in college, including seniors. This probably deserves a separate thread. Bt I really don't think there are very many and not enough to have a national top ten program year in and out.

Again, BYU's talent pool as far as players really isn't going to get any better. Fine, if we were in the Big12 we may get a non-LDS recruit or two that we wouldn't have otherwised gotten and maybe that elite LDS athlete or two would come to BYU over some other BCS school but there really aren't many of those we don't miss those too often.

However, you can do a lot in football with average or slightly better than average players. Football is much more a team sport determined by team play than most other sports.

Boise doesn't out recruit Oregon, Alabama or the other top BCS schools. Yet, in the last decade Boise has competed with the best of them. Why? Coaching.

If BYU wants to compete in a National Championship then some upgrades in coaching need to be made.

Great coaches are expensive. That's where $$ differences come into play.

BYU has the money. Let's not kid ourselves. It's just whether BYU wants to spend the money.

I also seem to recall an article in the last year or so where this topic was reported on and as far as salary BYU isn't that far behind. Throw in the fact a special Trust was created by some wealthy donor to ensure BYU coaches get paid well and money really isn't an issue.

True, BYU needs a coach that wants to coach at BYU. We won't court any coaches with piles of money, and frankly I don't want a coach that's in it for the money. But, we can be competitive and I feel we can do better; certainly on the OC front.
