Brandon Davies has no clue how to play zone as a center.

He was outside guarding the 3 line WAY WAY too much last night. He should be out there almost never in man coverage (pop out on screens, and then QUICKLY pop back down to you man), and you should NEVER be out there as a center in zone. The major problem is that he was leaving his 7 foot man to go guard a 2 guard on the 3 line, giving his guy free roam to the basket.



Carlino or Haws would be the pass come inside and try to defend the ball, but what are they going to do against a 7 footer on a consistent basis.



He needs to get a clue and stop trying so hard, or he is going to start costing us some big games.

Maybe. I thought that was Roses defense generally.

But yes, BD isn't dominating on D as he should as a Sr. Too many cheap fouls. But he didn't foul out at least. He was key at a few moments last night. I just wish he were having a banner year for him to give him a shot at the NBA.

Davies is a good player but BYU fans give him way too much credit. The guy is just too slow and lacks explosion. If Keena Young had Davies' body, now that kid would've gone pro.

I miss Keena Young and Mike Hall...



Perimeter defense is a major pain point for us. Cusick and Zylstra lack the speed. Haws is still getting his legs back and as much as Sharp has improved he gets turned around out there. I suspect either BD or Rose is having BD go out to try and close out the perimeter better. Problem is Sharp doesn't rotate under. I suspect it's more of Davies just trying too much. Can't really blame him given how horrible we are at defending the perimeter.



Again, another reason why Carlino and Winder should start.

Davies defense is suspect because BYU's zone defense is suspect. Haws gets lost on the wing a LOT. He doesn't track people in his area very well and others have to compensate a lot.

Yeah, I agree. We definitely need better rotational around. I just wish Davies with stay away from the 3 line because that is where he gets his dumb fouls. Also, we get out rebounded with him around the perimeter.

Davies isn't the issue in the zone defense. It's not an inside-out defense. We have slow wings so it causes Davies to get out of position easier.

Yeah, I see Haws and Sharp as the weak links out there. When your wings can't rotate quickly enough you get owned. This was our problem with Hartsock the last couple of years on D, which it why Abouo was so nice to have because he covered a lot of area quickly.

Word. This has everything to do with the defensive schemes Rose likes to run (has to run) given the roster he's got, and nothing to do with Davies 'not having a clue' how to play the position.

Word. This has everything to do with the defensive schemes Rose likes to run (has to run) given the roster he's got, and nothing to do with Davies 'not having a clue' how to play the position.

The problem we have guys too slow to stick with opponents if we go man-to-man and those same defenders don't rotate well or quick enough when in a zone. When those defenders are making shots on the other end, their defensive deficiencies are mitigated. When they're missing shots (like Saturday and most of this year) those issues are magnified.

I think the answer is: phase out cusick and zylstra Put them on the bench and give them reserve minutes. Start winder and Carlino, and i would also start hrwa d or Austin at center and move BD to pf (replacing sharp)

Agreed, IF, Carlino can play under control. But yes, bringing in Harward may help Brandon to not have their big guy on him. Rosé has to keep shuffling.

I've been surprised that we have seen this arrangement this year. Hopefully it all comes together soon. I still think we have a chance to have a good team and a good year but we need some chemistry and some leadership.

Would love to see Davies and Harward on the court. Sharp is the only one rebounding, though.

How about sharp at the 3, haws at two and Carlino 1? Is he too slow for the 3 spot? Not good enough shooter? When Davies or Harvard out he could shift to the 4.

He's definitely not your traditional 3. I don't like it.
