Jeff Grimes fired

Jeff Grimes, former BYU offensive line coach was fired yesterday by new Auburn head coach, Gus Malzahn.



Is there a possibility that Grimes comes back to BYU as a line coach?

I think most byu fans would be pretty excited about that.

I assume the new coach wants his Guys and that Grimes has had reasonably good success at Auburn. Can't judge him completely on the overall Auburn w-L record. Anybody know anything?

Until doman figures out what type of offense byu runs i am not sure hiring a new offensive line coach will do much to improve our offense.

Why would you hire back a coach that left the program? His coming back would be a fall back move according to his decision to head over to I believe Colorado in the first place.



I have nothing against his coaching and on that basis I wish he would have stayed at BYU, but why bring him back since he'd probably leave again?

Because he is a proven coach that may have figured out the grass isn't always greener where there is stability. The lower position coaches rarely get fired under Bronco (Jaime Hill, and Robert Anae are exceptions).

Maybe bc an Oline coach gets paid much more at an SEC school vs BYU? I don't know.

I am sure that is true. Bielema said on Mike and Mike this morning that the reason he left Wisconsin is because 1. He is tired of the turnover of the Assistant Coaches. Apparently he could offer no more than $300,000 at Wisconsin for a coordinator, but at Arkansas he can pay $800,000-$1M for a Coordinator. 2. He sees that he will have a better chance to be in the 4 team playoff in the SEC, where a one loss SEC team that doesn't make the SEC title game may still make the four team playoff. He was trying to be respectful of the Big 10, but essentially admitted that the SEC is a much better conference.



All that being said, Grimes coached at BYU and was really good. He is out of a job right now. It doesn't hurt to ask. He can always say no.

This would be a huge get to have him back. He's the only coach under Bronco to leave of his own accord, without having his contract expire and not renewed, or being shown the door early. Yeah, he might be looking to leave again, but I'd take him even if it were for just one year--next year will be brutal and without a solid O-Line, it'll be roadkill. Hope Taysom's knee heals up--he's gonna need it.



And Doman would be wise to pick Grimes brain for what he's seen over the last few year in the BCS conferences.



I don't think he'll come, though. Pay is too little, and he may be looking at an OC position at other schools. On that note, I hear BYU might have a position open there, too!

+1. If Jeff Grimes could be hired back, it would be a HUGE coup. I doubt the Cougs even have a chance.



While at Auburn (2010), Texas' Mack Brown interviewed Jeff Grimes to become the new OL coach at UT. Brown offered the job to Grimes, and a salary that would have made him the highest paid OL coach in the nation. Grimes turned it down to stay at Auburn.



Grimes will be highly sought after. He is good - and we need him.



When Grimes was at BYU under Mendenhall (2006), BYU had the nation's 4th best offense. Averaging 465 yds. per game, 141 yds. on the ground, won the MWC, and finished 11-2.



Be prepared to open the checkbook.

Grimes pay might be public info. I have not followed his career. And my telephonic apparatus and bad eyes do not facilitate research while on the road.



I would guess that an Auburn SEC assistant coach- same position - apples to apples - makes 2-3 times what a BYU coach gets.



Didn't Bielema get $3.5M plus perks at Arkansas. Compare that to Bronco at $1M.

Never underestimate the power of your apparatus.



Jeff Grimes had a base salary of $319K as OL coach in 2010 at Auburn before Texas offered him and eventually hired an OC at $400K when Grimes turned them down. Who knows what bump Auburn gave to keep him. Who knows what other perks and bonuses are added to that.



I am guessing Weber is lucky to barely crack $100K base.

You all seem to recognize that we liked him as a coach, but he knew there was stability in his job at BYU and left. He was at Auburn for four years, his longest stint.

+1. Bingo. He has a great track record & will not last long in the unemployment line. If a job was offered from Bronco to Grimes, as soon as the salary was offered - Bronco would hear a laugh, then a click.

Ever heard of a counter offer? He probably got one at Auburn where he was already making $319K vs the $400K Texas offered.
