Cougs_RuleI Like many things about Bronco. And I really value that he is trying to run a clean program. I wish he would stay. I wish he would adapt and overcome current concerns.
AND, I really wonder how Bronco has painted himself to the rest of the college football world. Is he the Gary Crowton of D coordinators? Has he really adapted to the HC job? He is without doubt a tremendous D coordinator--at least with a "bend don't break style" at NM and BYU. And if his stock is high, it is based on his defensive results but handicapped By his offensive results. Trying to run a clean program is also good, but good within the context of a program And Culture that values that more than wins. But has he made the leap as HC? Being HC requires an acumen with the public that Bronco really struggles with.
If Bronco wants to coach where there is "something more than football" like academics or at a service academy, why in the heck is he pillorying his reputation by interviewing at a party school like Colorado?
I don't begrudge him playing the field to see what's out there. But c'mon Bronco, "THE GRASS AIN'T GREENER on the other side of the fence." Unless you are just searching for more greenbacks and/or green freaks in Boulder.
No board is going to clammor for football fifth as you have branded yourself. They only speak of higher order things like grad rates and "raising good young men" as a facade. They want BCS glory and money. And you really want a similar salary as BYU at a service academy? C'mon Bronco. Is this something to do with BYU not recruiting you as a player and wanting to "get back" at them? You need BYU. You can't and wont find another place that not only promotes your value system, but tolerates it as well. Look at the man in the mirror and decide if your foolish pride is worth stepping away. BYU would love you and most do, and most will forgive this years little antic, if you would lose that "I was good enough to play at BYU " chip on your shoulder; and this incongruent coach speak of "I don't know much about offense," but neither do you "uneducated fans"; all mixed with an attitude of "screw you about playing Riley Nelson--IT'S MY TEAM AND IM THE BOSS" routine.
We whine because we care. But don't think that most of us don't value as much or more the clean program you are trying to run over BCS glory. Get over yourself and stop staring past the interview cameras as though you hate talking to us. You are pretty dang good in person, now apply it in interviews. Stop acting like you dispise the fans. Try the Urban Meyer approach or even the Dave Rose approach. He doesn't like the fans that much, but he endears himself to fans and doesn't swing at pitches in the dirt or roll around in the weeds with the vocal minority of fans. Admit in some meaningful way that you blew it and stop with this "we aren't looking back" crap. It is not authentic and not flattering for yourself. You keep acting with this "E tu Brute" mentality as though we are all stabbing you from different directions and its simply not true. Take some PR coarses this off season. Add to one of your book recommendations "how to win friends and influence people." It's been your Achilles heal and is unfortunate and unnecessary. But, you can adapt and overcome. These problems will follow you if you continue to be an HC somewhere else and you will be miserable wherever you go after the honeymoon wears off, unless you are competing, truly competing and not just advertising, for a NC--and what are those odds? And BYU will be far more loyal and job-secure than anyone "out there."
So, c'mon Bronco, do the interview thing, get it out of your system, and realize the grass is really Much Bluer here, as LaVell found out, than anywhere else. Besides, $1,000,000 a year ain't too bad for football being fifth.
