Before We All Get Too Giddy - How Many Did BYU Score?

Texas State is now 4-8 after hanging 66 points on NMSU to end the season. I guess that means Texas State was able to score enough points on their previous opponents to actually beat 3 of them.

Thank you for proving that comparative scoring is a poor way of determining how strong/good a team is.

By this logic, Florida St is a better team than Notre Dame. Notre Dame only beat Boston College 21-6, while the Seminoles won 51-7.

It is not a great way of determining team value, but can give some insight into just how atrocious the NMSU defense is.

True. But then you would have thought the box score for that 66-pt outing would have been examined. Where it would have been discovered that Texas St had two fumble recoveries returned for touchdowns.

So the Texas St offense put up 52 points - which is very similar to our 50 point effort, sans two missed XPs.

Some further analysis would have yielded the discovery that Texas St's PER for the season was 127.17 and BYU's was 127.06. And I don't think anyone was claiming BYU was an offensive juggernaught this year.

Of course, in the actual game, BYU's PER was 172.11and Texas St was 100.99. So the week prior, NMSU stacked the box and dared BYU's 3rd string QB to beat them with the pass. Which he did.

So NMSU dropped eight or nine agianst Texas St and dared them to beat them with the run. Wich they did - rushing for 446 yards on just 40 carries. Which wasn't a bad strategy considering Texas St was averaging just 155 yards a game rushing.

In other words, no matter how they try to stop you, NMSU can and should be beat soundly.

Which is what BYU did.

It is fascinating how bad they are though. I mean, in one week you give up 380 yards, 6 TDs and a 170+ PER and then turn around and give up 440+ yards rushing. Yikes!

Given how many people ignored the warning signs in the comparative scores from the first three games that BYU's offense was going to have a subpar year (even with a healthy RN), I'm not surprised that people are quick to ignore this comparative score as well.

BYU scored 45 against Weber and could have scored 42 on Washington St as well with some better blue zone execution.

Exactly.

The following teams scored more than 35 against Weber:

Fresno St (37 pts)

McNeese St (35)

EWU (32)

Cal Poly (37)

UC Davis (45)

Northern Colorado (42)

Of those, only FSU and UC Davis had the benefit, like BYU, of playing at home. So congratulations, we put up as many against the purple wildcats at home as UC Davis and UNC did in Ogden. Note to the reader--UC Davis just went 4-7 in the Big Sky Conference. I'd imagine some of those teams could have put up more points "with better execution" as well.

As for Wazzou, BYU put up 30 points. You might excuse that away by saying "we could have done better with better execution," but that's the most measly-mouthed excuse I've ever heard. Any team could do better with better execution, and it seems BYU has had season-long issues with "execution." Here are some other teams that put up 25 or more against Wazzou this season:

UNLV (27)

Colorado (35)

Utah (49)

Imagine how many more points they would have had if they had "executed better."

The warning signs were there early in the season that our offense was going to struggle, but many chose to focus on the score and how things could get better with "better execution" instead of admitting that the high point totals might not be a harbinger of greatness and that poor execution was a warning sign rather than an indication of upside.

I'm not sure where this discussion is going. BYU wasn't an offensive juggernaught this season. Trying to equate BYU with a Texas St team doesn't accomplish anything.

I am not saying Texas State is better than BYU or even in the same neighborhood. I am just saying that they - NMSU - have a Swiss cheese defense and just about anybody with a pulse can pop 50 points on them.

Lets not assume that Lark is going to have wide open receivers and little pressure if he had played @U, @BSU, USU, OSU, @ND, @GT, and @SJSU - back when Lark had even less experience. GT was a weak defense - but nowhere near as weak as NMSU. GT played in the ACC Championship and lost - but gave up nowhere near that many points.

The point is that, even with the NMSU win, BYU's offense is woeful. I am not trying to equate BYU with Texas State. I'm just saying BYU's best offensive performance this season wasn't even up to snuff with TSU's and that the teams against whom they have piled up points also served as doormats to some of the worst offenses in the country.

Point being--the Brandon Doman offense sucks.

I think the Doman offense has suffered from poor QB play.

He has called 25 games. Just 10 of them have seen a PER of 135. In those games, BYU is averaging 485 yards (208 rushing and 278 passing) and 42 points. The average completion rate was .647 in those games. The highs and lows for those games were

Highs

187.36 PER (Idaho St 2011)

56 pts (Idaho St 2011)

537 yds (Idaho 2012)

.704 complete (Idaho St 2011)

Lows

139.49 PER (GT 2012)

30 pts (Wash St 2012)

411 yards (NMSU 2011 & GT 2012)

.583 complete (NMSU 2011 & SJSU 2011)

The problem is the 15 games below the standard where the average completion rate is .548. BYU has averaged just 21 points and 355 yards of offense (130 rushing 225 passing).

Highs

134.26 PER (Weber St 2012)

47 pts (Hawaii 2012)

540 yds (Hawaii 2012)

.667 complete (Utah St 2012)

Lows

37.49 PER (Boise 2012)

6 pts (Utah St & Boise St 2012)

200 yards (Boise St 2012)

.421 complete (Boise St 2012)

In the 15 sub-standard games, BYU has completed fewer than half its passes five times.

BYU needs better amd more accurate QB play.

In full disclosure average record in the above the standard category 3.3-8.7. In the below standard category it is 6.9-4.9

And who is our QB coach as well?

The plays are there. The throws haven't been. Many throws have just been missed. Many throws aren't difficult for the QBs we've had or outside their capabilities.

But then, if they are that inconsistent and inaccurate, maybe they are.

Great, maybe Doman does need to go!

While I haven't been amazingly impressed by Doman's play calling, I haven't seen anything horrible either. I have seen a lot of horrible offensive line play - seriously, tons of pressure when the other team is rushing 3 or 4.

I did see Doman call a great play against Boise State in the first half that had Apo wide open in the corner of the end zone. Injured Riley underthrew him for a blue-zone pick.

In full disclosure, I am a Riley fan. But not an injured Riley fan. Play Hill or Lark against Utah and Boise State and I think we win those games. Get a freaking blindside block in the 4th quarter at SJSU and I think we win 21-20.

Obviously, I am disappointed in QB play and BYU's 7-5 record. More frustrate with our poor line play. But the sky is not falling and I think Doman will turn into a good OC. But if a better option becomes available this offseason, I would not be upset if BYU makes a move.
