Nelson is Doman

I watched the 2000 BYU-Utah game which was Doman's second start. As I was watching Doman play I couldn't help but note how similar Doman played to how Nelson plays. Doman was very inaccurate. He often looked to scramble. He made some pretty dumb plays to try to keep a play from dying, twice he was tripped by the center when we were on the goal line and flipped the ball to the RB instead of just falling down. One of them was fumbled and recovered for a seven yard loss. The other actually turned into a touchdown. High risk-High reward.



The difference between Doman and Nelson is Doman stopped doing things like this in his senior season. Nelson never improved.



Maybe some of the love affair from the coaches comes down to Doman sees himself in Nelson.

Actually Nelson is a cross between Doman and Bronco. All three inferior D1 athlete overachievers. Doman learned and got better his Sr year. Nelson did not. But hey, he has grit, determination and is tougher than all of us.

But you are right. It's why Doman fits with Bronco and Nelson and Hill fit with Doman and Bronco. And it's why Lark sat and rotted--except wait, he didn't and he looks very solid. These are all reasons I will continue to argue that there is a death to the drop back quarterback at BYU. For as long as Bronco is around and Doman is around. Vs NMSU was an apparition, a fluke, a horrible team that any offense would have worked against.

Unfortuantely for BYU, Nelson stopped overacheiving at BYU when Weber St killed his back. He vastly under acheived from that point on the rest of his senior season.

Although, giving Riley the benefit of the doubt, he may have been performing much better than anyone else with those type of injuries, notwithstanding stats like, -4 PER.

Doman progressed enough to make an NFL roster for a few years. Riley has no shot in million years of making an NFL roster as a QB.

Nelson is NOT Doman, Nelson is Tom Young, a good guy that I am glad to see graduating and moving on to things that he is better at

I remember Doman being uncannily accurate his senior season. But his was the option and short game that was nearly unstoppable with Staley.

Based on the play calling in the NMSU game I'm actually not worried about Doman's ability to call plays for a drop back passer. I was a little worried that Doman could only call plays for a QB that plays like he did since he didn't appear to know any different. Seeing the game plan for Lark shows that Doman can modify the offense to fit the QB. Now Doman just needs to create an offensive identity for the team going forward and the QB's need to learn to slide and throw the ball away...

Really, Nelson is Doman? Going into the Utah game his senior year, Doman had a completion rate at 65%, 28 TD to 4 Int. I'd be happy if Nelson, as a senior, was Doman as a senior.

Yep, all you need to be a good OC is an accurate and efficient QB.
