Believe It Or Not - Utes Could Still Go Bowling

Bowls are hurting. There are still enough teams that could be eligible by winning out - but most are not favored to do so. Utah is in the pecking order even if technically ineligible after the dust settles. You might think they would turn it down, but hey - turn 5-6 into 6-6 extends the no losing seasons string and KW has recently bemoaned the loss of the practice opportunities for player development and momentum into Spring camp.

Yes, if the chips fall right they could still make it to a bowl game; however, they would still have a losing record if they were to win said bowl game (5-7 to 6-7).

I thought you had to have 6 wins against Division 1 opponents to qualify.

The rule is, that you must have at least 6 wins and not have a losing season (if you play 13 games you must win 7). However, currently, we are at the saturation point for bowl games such that, on a typical year, everyone who has 6+ wins goes to a bowl game. Unfortunately, at least 4 teams this year, would normally go to a bowl game, however, due to either self imposed, or NCAA imposed penalties, will not be going to a bowl game this year. That, coupled with the possibility that we will have fewer than typical winning teams, means that some bowl games will not be able to hold their bowl game without inviting a team with a losing record. In this case, the NCAA will issue exemptions, first to the 6 win teams with 7 loses and then to 5 win teams in order to fill the available bowl slots. However, typically, when they need to use 5 win teams to fill bowl games, they pick a 5 win team from the conference that is tied to the game anyway. Since the PAC 12 has 7 bowl tie ins and 8 available teams, it is unlikely that Utah will be bowling this year. :evil: :crazy: 8)

What a cluster[truck], you go 5-7 (3-6 in conference) but still have a chance to go to a bowl game, shameful. This whole thing has shades of UCLA last year, where they went 6-6, then went to 6-7 when they lost to Oregon in the championship game but still got invited to a bowl game because, hey, they had 6 wins, and then lost that bowl game to Illinois to finish 6-8. Awesome, the Pac-12 South "Champion" finishes at 0.429 if it weren't so pathetic it'd be funny.

From my quick perusal of the web today, it looks like enough of the cusp teams won yesterday to fill all 70 spots with 6-6 or better teams.
