It is official. Maryland announced it is leaving ACC for Big 10. Rutgers from Big East also expected to announce tomorrow.

Now - just stand back and watch what reactions take place across the country as the dominoes fall into place.

PAC was willing to watch other conferences go to 14. But will they sit back and watch their Rose Bowl brother do it without reacting. And if they do - will they land Texas and Okie or have to settle for us and BSU or AFA?

Will Big 12 stick at 10 trying to avoud the NC risk of playing a Championship Game or will they fear that they are not keeping step and grab 2-4 teams? Or 6 if they lose two to PAC.

ACC is going to grab someone to replace Maryland. Watch out Beast - coming after 1 from you. And Beast already needed more teams - add 2 to their needs.

Will SEC - say - Dang - now everyone has 14 - let's move first and get 16.

Will their still be a Big 5 Group of conferences - or is it dropping to 4 with ACC and Big 12 fighting to be the 4th.

Just Wonderin

And what does that mean to us? We can't even beat fraking San Jose State. No one wants us except ESPN, so they can have someone to plug into their bad game slots.

If you are really naive enough to think BYU's W/L record has anything at all to do with Conferences wanting or not wanting us

Think of THIS.

PAC just added U and THIS - COLORADO.

SEC just added Missouri.

Big 10 just added Maryland and Rutgers.

Our W/L record had nothing to do with it.

Think of THIS:

Anti LDS Church bias

No Medical School

Limited Doctoral programs

Perceptions that BYU is theologically narrow - lacking diversity

No Sunday Play

TV right demands

A fan base that does not spend lavishly when they travel - airlines and rental cars and taxis instead of driving there - stay and eat with family or friends or motel 6 - vs five star hotels and restaurants - diet coke and water vs fine wine and lots of booze

Thus NO CIGAR

I think there is a long list of reasons why BYU has not been included into a conference. You have listed many of them, but I still think if BYU were ranked no.1 right now and looking at playing in the national champion game (re: Notre Dame, a religious school) then some conferences would be willing to work any one of the issues you listed. But, maybe i am being too naive.

The Maryland defection shows that the conference exit fees are not really an issue. Seriously, $50 million. That's a hefty exit fee. Anything is on the table now.

If I'm Larry Scott, I'm on the phone with Texas and Oklahoma right away. The PAC 12 will only expand by going into new markets. Texas and Oklahoma are logical. UNLV is a possibility, if it gets its new stadium - but even then. Kansas is also on the radar. This could be the only opportunity for the PAC 12 to expand, and it's time to go on offense rather than defense.

If I'm Bowlsby, I go hard after Florida State and Clemson. The Big 12 knows it can get Louisville or BYU if it needs them. More likely that the Big 12 lands Florida State and Clemson and then adds Louisville and one other school. Now remember, the ACC still has the $50 million exit fee. That's $100 million to get FSU and Clemson. (although it will probably be negotiated down). So BYU still has a chance to get in when compared to other ACC schools. Seriously, $150 million to get three ACC schools?

The Big East is in BIG trouble. UConn is likely going to the ACC. The Big East will lose Rutgers and UConn. Will likely lose Louisville. Perhaps others depending on whether the Big 12 raids the ACC. Is there any question that the Big East is NOT the place for BYU?

BYU simply sits back and hopes for a Big 12 invite. Otherwise, embrace independence and the WCC.

It does not matter Hawk. TCU joined The Big East for about 15 minutes - paid a paltry exit fee - and took our spot in The Big 12. The Big East has proven to be the stepping stone gateway to ACC and Big 12 and now Big 10. That is the reality.

BYU already has nearly half of what will be left of the Big East on its future schedules. Boise St., Houston, Cincinnati, UCF. No reason to join....at all. However, BYU is likely in a better position to get a bowl tie in and scheduling arrangement with the Big East. Could help with November scheduling issues and bowl options - ie, having multiple possible bowl destinations each season.

Two Things.

Then why isn't Boise State in the PAC or Big 12. They have a shorter list of things to be worked around.

BYU had only been undefeated once - ever - and did it by playing pretty much NOBODY that year while having one of the best BYU teams ever. So - that ain't gonna happen any time soon and you will not find one OBJECTIVE national media source that expected it to even come close to happening vs this schedule.

Yeah - no reason at all - except the reasons you went on to list - and getting the other half of them scheduled. SDSU in November would be nice along with SMU, etc. Plus BEAST to ACC, Big 10, and Big 12 is a proven gateway. Independence, so far, is a proven failure when PAC added two other teams in or near our market and Big 12 looked the other direction to add some replacements. BEAST seems to carry some TV marketability credibility. But maybe Indy vs BEAST does not matter because BYU is plain and simply not wanted. So go back to the reasons you listed. Still makes sense to consider BEAST or MWC if BEAST loses western teams to MWC in all of this chaos.

But THIS thread is not about Big East opportunities. THAT was already available.

This post is about THIS: maybe we get lucky in the reaction to all of this and PAC or Big 12 rethinks their strategy - or both do.

I think BYU starting a new conference is much more likely than joining the Big East. Remember, now all you need to do is be the highest ranked team out of the remaining conferences to be invited to a big bowl game.

In the past, the Big East may have have been a gateway conference, but so was the MWC (Utah to Pac, TCU to Big 12). The Big East has no one left that any of the big conferences will want, especially if Louisville and Cincy move.

BYU has to work on improving bowl tie ins, but I don't think that's something they necessarily need a conference to do.

Texas and Oklahoma aren't going anywhere. Sorry, they just got their big bowl game with the SEC and they are getting huge money. Also, Longhorn Network would not fly in PAC 12, and Texas has too much invested in it.

BYU is in a good position if the Big 12 wants to expand. That's the only move BYU should jump at in the foreseeable future.

If I'm Bowlsby, I go after more than FSU and Clemson--I also go after Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. That gets them 4 of the ACC's bigger football names in one fell swoop. That would put the Big 12 at 14 teams like the SEC and if they want to go to 16, they can take their pick of Louisville and Cincinnati or BYU and Air Force.

It does matter, because the Big Least has no stones left to step on on the way up.

Don't saddle yourself with millions of dollars of potential exit fees to join a conference that is now considerably worse than the MWC was when we were a part of it.

Good point about Texas and Oklahoma. They have created a pretty good situation for themselves. Texas gets Kansas State at home this weekend. They win, and guess what, Oklahoma and Texas are on top of the Big 12 standings again.

Starting in 2014, they get the SEC champ in a bowl game and a great TV deal. PAC 12 will stay at 12.

I'm not sure why the Big 12 would expand except to get Florida State and Clemson. I could see them going after Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, but that would be $200 million in ACC exit fees. Even if you negotiate that number down, how do you deal with $100-$150 in exit fees? Their TV deal isn't that lucrative is it? It would be pretty sweet for the Big 12 to bring over the three teams that have end-of-season rivalries with the SEC.....hmmmm.....(Florida-FSU, South Carolina-Clemson, Georgia-Georgia Tech).

May be Texas could get Texas A&M rivalry back that way....

I think we lost our chance at the Big 12 expanding when Alabama, KSU, and Oregon all lost. Had Alabama been number 1 and KSU was number 2 going into conference championship week and then Oregon leapfrogged KSU up to number 2 after Oregon won it's conference championship game, you'd see a lot more interest from the Big 12 to have a conference championship game. It sounds like Texas and Oklahoma don't want the conference championship game because it might screw up their chances to get into the title game, but if you have someone else get screwed out of the championship game because there wasn't 12 teams in the conference you might see the other 8 schools push for expansion.

Isola
This move by the Big Ten shows that TV markets are what is driving expansion and not on field performance (or even basketball). The Big Ten wanted to get into the New York market and the DC/Baltimore market.

I also think it is interesting to consider what the SEC, Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC will do.

But I cannot believe people are trying to spin this as proof that BYU should have joined the Big East. That conference is in free fall and grasping at straws. In the course of a decade they will have lost every football member they had, although Temple has returned. They are the WAC of the east.

The SEC will not take another team within a state in which they have a footprint. That is why they expanded with Texas A&M and Missouri, rather than Florida State and Clemson. I would expect to see Virginia Tech for the DC market and North Carolina State for the North Carolina Market.

It is funny, but the only expansion that has made sense so far to me is the SEC, in a historical way. The SEC is uniting all of the previous confederate states. ;) Think about it. Aside from Missouri and Kentucky which were not confederate states (though Missouri was a sympathizer), the SEC has teams from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee, and South Carolina. All they are missing to reform the Confederate States Conference is Virginia and North Carolina. I guess the South will rise again, but probably not what Southerners were thinking.

I'm guessing BYU stays independent or forms a new league if it is more profitable TV wise and gives the same exposure on ESPN. My choices, with media market rankings in parentheses, would be San Diego State (San Diego--28), San Jose State (Northern California market-San Francisco 6th/ rather than Fresno 55th), Houston (Houston-10, Dallas is 5, but most people probably aren't watching SMU in Dallas, so go with Houston), Utah State (semi-rival, not media number), Boise State (Idaho market #119, but people tune in to watch around the country), UNLV (Las Vegas-42, Reno-108, so no UNR even though probably a better team) , and Air Force (Colorado Springs #91, but other military members will tune in to watch--and I have a soft spot for them). This would provide very good late season games, provide a footprint in all of the surrounding states, and still give BYU the early season flexibility to play anywhere for five games. An eight team league seems like a good idea. Keeps the number of mouths to feed small, everyone plays everyone every year, and practically every team in the conference can be bowl eligible with good scheduling (exept UNLV who will still suck). This is the very type of thing that makes the SEC look good year after year--besides everyone else being down and the SEC winning the last six BCS titles in a row. Besides, wouldn't it be cool to be part of the Big 8? :D

Also, no Wyoming or New Mexico--while UNM brings in a #44 market, they are just an awful team and not a great location like UNLV. Wyoming brings nothing to the table, nor does Colorado State. So, I would leave them out. It is time to get smart about this whole realignment thing and find something that makes sense for all involved if BYU wants to form a new conference form.
