Apologies to KingCoug since he started another thread on this topic, but I thought a poll might be illustrative.

If you could make the call, who would you fire before next season? Keep in mind that you have to find a replacement that fits within BYU's honor code system. You can pick as many/few as you like.

How about a none of the above option?

I tried that, but you can only have 10 options on your poll, and there are ten coaches.

I've made my vote.

Since I don't have any evidence for choosing besides watching games or reading about off the field disciplinary stuff, I wish to disclose that I have absolutely no business deciding who should stay or go. But in the spirit of fun and games on here, I chose Mark Weber simply because his results are the most glaring since Jeff Grimes left.

After silently wishing Anae would be fired a couple years back, I realized after he left that he wasn't so bad after all. This was further evidence to me that I have no business deciding these things.

Just win, baby!

I chose Weber, because I really want to in a large group today.

That said, BYU doesn't have a big tradition of cleaning house. And part of that is because BYU is a unique place both from an Honor Code standpoint and from the mission-logistics standpoint. Mission at 18 may change that 3-4 years down the road, but not immediately.

Questions:

1) Who is Bronco grooming to take over as DC? I don't think he'll want to leave the cupboard bare.

2) If you vote for Bronco, who is DC for the bowl game?

3) Doman is not grooming anyone, he's still learning himself, so who understands enough about managing Honor Code and mission-logistics to take over the offense. Darrell Bevell is probably closest (from his own experience, but has none of that on a program level).

4) Why is Crowton in the CFL now?

I would want to have Weber gone for sure. The OL consistently under-performs. I also think this position might be the easiest to fill.

I also voted for Reynolds, because let's face it, he's only good coaching running backs. I do feel that he has earned the right to retire than be fired. I would eliminate his position and bring in a QB coach instead. TE's can work with the receivers or the OL, depending on the drill.

I have to give Doman a pass for one more year, because he's been hampered by the HC's love affair with the QB. I don't think it's fair to judge him on the fact that he can't call half the plays in the playbook because the QB can't run them.

Weber and Doman, though I am not 100% sold on Doman. I think he has improved, and I am not 100% sure that Doman is resposible for Riley playing or if it is being pushed on him.

I would also plan on not extending the contract of Bronco, so I would be looking for head coaching replacements.

In addition to x-ing these two, I would offer Chad Lewis a permanent position, after asking L. Reynolds if he is retiring and/or would he want to coach the line. If L Reynolds will coach the line, then I would bring in Lewis as the TE coach, and have him take over the Oline (and have Lewis coach the TEs as well when L Reynolds finally wants out).

This is hard given a lack of inside information. It is also hard because the more i look at this season the more i realize that just an average qb has us ranked in the top 10. if that is true our coaches have not done that bad.

the biggest proble with them is that they picked riley. i can see why they did it at the time but it was short sighted. in hindsight it is obvious investing in riley was a mistake. we had much more talent that should have been developed behind him.

i don't know if it was doman or bronco's decision to cowtoe to riley so much. if it is true that doman chose to go with a new qb for utah then it gives me faith in him and his ability to fix problems and see them before they happen, something bronco seems to not be as good at.

in all honesty i think weber is going to be the fall guy while bronco is going to get an official talking to about the need to do better. if we lose the bowl game to sdsu then we may see bronco or doman gone as well. i just dont see bronco being let go yet though.

doman has certainly seemed in over his head but i wonder if he will be good. given we have had two bad years under his belt maybe we are ready to start seeing something better.

i don't fire anybody but weber unless i know we have better to replace them.

I was silently hoping that Anae would stay but EVERYONE was so convinced that his replacement could do a better job with his eyes closed in a coma that I bought into the "fact" that Anae was a terrible coach. Turned out that he wasn't so bad. Weber MIGHT be the only coach that I'd choose and that's because he's NEVER had a year where the o'line performed well.

I don't think that Anae would be doing any better with Nelson, actually. Anae's offense required a quarterback that could throw the ball and had timing and accuracy. Riley Nelson has none of those things. (The closest he has is timing, but without an arm and accuracy timing doesn't matter much at all.)

Anae would have RN on the bench and Lark or Heaps playing now.

Actually Anae chased Heaps off, right??? Or were those just more rumors spread by indignant BYU fans who hated Anae for being the cause of all things bad at BYU?

^^^THIS!

Didn't we hear so much scuttlebut about "Doman wants Heaps , but Anae wants Nelson!"

Maybe the thruth was altogether different. And if this year's rumors are to be believed, it was probably both Doman and Anae that wanted Heaps and Bronco that wanted Nelson, and said "Whoever can design me an offense around these skills gets to be OC!" :skeptic:

Bronco doesn't trust freshmen. Bronco, at times, is the Tyrone Corbin of college football. Gotta play the experienced guys to win. Talent > experience.

For all the things to hate about him, I believe Rick Majerus had it right. His philosophy was to get better players than the ones you already have and play them. He had an all conference performer at PG, and went and got Andre Miller. He played Andre Miller because he was better.

That's a romantic though, but how often do you get a better player (especially at QB) who can beat out experience right out of the gates. Much easier in basketball. And wasn't the younger heaps starting in front of the "experienced" Nelson?

This is another rumor stated as "fact" thrown around by fans. I just don't buy it.

I would can Weber (OL) and Howell (Secondary, Special Teams).

Half of me wants to fire or demote Doman. Half of me wants to give him one more year.

Put Bronco on notice.

I don't understand why BYU has TWO linebacker coaches but no QB-only coach, and no Special Teams-only coach.
