Week 12 RER & Other Observations

Here are the RERs from the San Jose St game with season RERs in parentheses. And some other observations after breaking down the box score and play-by-play report.

- BYU had 19 passing first downs, the most since having 20 vs Tulane in 2009.



- BYU did not convert a 3rd & 7 or longer - the first since vs Utah St in 2011.



- San Jose St converted on 3rd & 9, the first 3rd & Long converted against BYU in five weeks.



- PER has won 19 of the last 20 games.



- BYU has had multiple turnovers in four of the last five games. BYU has forced multiple turnovers once in the last five games.



- After going 18-2 in games decided by a TD or less (from 2006-20011), BYU has gone 1-4 this year.



- I've got 19 career starts for Riley. His career PER is 133.02. The record of his opponents is 111-111. Against teams that won 9 or more games (five games) his PER is 100.00. Against teams that won 5-8 games (seven games) it's 138.98. Against teams with four or fewer (seven games) it's 152.23.



- BYU's defense was very poor. A Defensive PER of 185.13. But not to be outdone, their Defensive PER in the blue zone was 274.16.



- BYU's offense was also equally poor, but more consistent with a 88.86 PER on 3rd and a 85.43 PER in the blue zone.



- Riley continued his better 1st half play. His first half PER was 123.55 and 114.91 in the second. His second halves were better than his first in his final five starts in 2011.

Given stats - let's hear about your suggestions for working with what we have. Need to look at all factors. It appears that we should have targeted the RBs Foote and Williams and TE Wilson with more touches if Included in pass attempts.

Wilson is a bit of an aberration, I think. He only has 11 targets this year and six catches. I don't think his sample size is enough.



Williams, should be more involved in the passing game. I think he should be getting about 20-25 touches a game, not the 15-20 he currently is.



I think Hoffman is getting plenty of looks, but he didn't catch enough balls (13 catches on 21 targets). Apo must start catching more. Apo is catching .531 of his targets. By comparison, Hoffman is catching .661, Williams .774, Ridley .682. Basically everyone but Pritchard catches at a better rate.



I think BYU coaches should spend some time with Stanford this offseason. Go to a power running team that uses TEs and play-action passing extensively. BYU is trying to do too much offensively.



But at the same time, I like the play calling this year. As Hawkwing said, plays have been there all year. And these are simple plays to make. Simple throws to make. Simple catches to make. We're just not making them.

I don't think Stanford would be agreeable. The PAC is at war with us.
