Six bowls in playoff format

DENVER -- The BCS commissioners and Presidential Oversight Committee have settled on a rotation of six bowls for the semifinals of the upcoming college football playoff system.



Also, the highest-rated champion from the "Group of Five" conferences -- the Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, Sun Belt and Mid-American -- will receive an automatic berth in one of the bowls.



"Today's meeting is a unanimous ratification of what we announced last June in Washington, D.C.," Charles Steger, the chairman of the Presidential Oversight Committee, said in a release. "I'm delighted that additional details have been resolved and that everything is on track so fans can enjoy the postseason they've been asking for. College football, with its great regular season, is strong and popular -- it's about to get stronger and more popular."



With the Group of Five earning an automatic bid, that will lock up seven of the 12 berths in the six access bowls along with the Rose (Pac-12 vs. Big Ten); Sugar (Big 12 vs. SEC) and Orange (ACC vs. Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame). The other five berths will be filled with at-large teams chosen, based on their final rankings, by a yet-to-be-formed selection committee.



While a Big Ten or SEC team could be selected to the Orange Bowl, the commissioners have agreed that when the Rose and/or Sugar bowls are hosting the semifinals, the Big Ten or SEC champion will not be placed in the Orange Bowl. Instead, it would have to be placed in one of the three other access bowls, sources told ESPN.



Those remaining three access bowls still must be determined, but the leading candidates are the Fiesta, Cotton and Chick-fil-A, sources said.



The group also has finalized the revenue-distribution deal for the new playoff. The oversight committee also will give the commissioners authority to finalize a media-rights deal with ESPN, which will be worth about $475 million a year over 12 years, sources said.

So, the big questions is - does BYU have to qualify for the new BCS as an at large or could it take the "Group of Five's" position? In other words, would BYU have to compete against the #2 teams from the SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, and PAC 12 for a bowl spot? Or compete against the highest ranked Big East/MWC/Etc. champ?



Also, I may have missed it, but I didn't see anything about whether there will be a two-per-conference rule. Anybody see anything about this? If not, BYU will have a VERY hard time getting into a new BCS bowl game going up against the "power" conferences. It would be much easier if BYU just had to be the highest ranked out of the lower "Group of Five".

Top-4 or no guarantees. Unless committee picks us. which could happen as we would be the most option compared to teh other "Group of 5" teams, with rare exceptions. If we join a league, then it is top-12 option.

Needless to say, I'm still not sold on how much of an improvement this is going to be. Seems the same parties are still running things, despite the chairs being shuffled around. Still too much room for bias in the whole process.

Amen. This is just another smoke screen by the BCS to keep the big bowls in their control. It will be slightly better as far as entertainment but as far as access and effectively determining the "best" team it will only be marginally better.



Please everyone stop calling this a playoff. Until everyone controls their own destiny by results on the field the national championship will continue to be a joke.

being part of big east would be good for byu under this scenario. we would have the easiest route to get into one of the bowls every year. if only we could keep the espn contract and join the big east with a notre dame like agreement that they have with acc.

JUST WIN BABY~~!!! The rest will take care of itself. If we were 9-1 right now...we'd be considered a BCS shot. I don't feel that being in a conference will change that. It doesn't matter the conference.



It's amazing to me that since 2001 when we had a legit shot at a BCS/Alliance bowl that we haven't done ANYTHING to get there. We have to WIN FIRST...then we can talk BCS or playoff or whatever. :munch:
