Most on here do not like the Big East. I agree that they have lost their best teams and could lose some more. But look at Sagrain http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc12.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1 BIG 12 (A) = 81.86 81.71 ( 1) 10 81.81 ( 1)

2 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 80.79 80.93 ( 2) 14 80.92 ( 2)

3 PAC-12 (A) = 80.01 78.47 ( 3) 12 79.18 ( 3)

4 BIG TEN (A) = 75.64 74.97 ( 4) 12 75.11 ( 4)

5 I-A INDEPENDENTS (A) = 74.37 74.34 ( 5) 4 74.37 ( 5)

6 BIG EAST (A) = 70.20 69.61 ( 7) 8 69.68 ( 7)

7 ATLANTIC COAST (A) = 69.21 69.93 ( 6) 12 69.74 ( 6)

8 SUN BELT (A) = 64.30 63.94 ( 9) 10 63.99 ( 9)

9 MOUNTAIN WEST (A) = 63.94 64.41 ( 8) 10 64.31 ( 8)

10 WESTERN ATHLETIC (A) = 63.31 63.65 ( 10) 7 63.53 ( 10)

11 MID-AMERICAN (A) = 61.19 60.99 ( 12) 13 61.06 ( 12)

12 CONFERENCE USA (A) = 60.97 61.39 ( 11) 12 61.29 ( 11)

The big 4 are by themselves. Indy with us is just behind them. Big East and ACC come next tier. Sun Belt has past MWC who will lose two of their top three teams and is right next to the WAC. Now consider the Big East will lose Pitt and SU who are in the middle of thier conference and under 500. Big East looks the same as ACC to me plus BSU and SDSU are upgrades.

44 Louisville A = 75.95 9 0 63.46( 105)

47 Rutgers A = 75.47 7 1 62.33( 117)

49 Cincinnati A = 75.21 6 2 62.53( 114)

60 Syracuse A = 71.00 4 5 71.16( 44)

63 Pittsburgh A = 70.55 4 5 66.37( 75)

76 South Florida A = 67.55 3 6 68.89( 54)

103 Temple A = 61.49 3 5 68.16( 61)

115 Connecticut A = 59.65 3 6 63.64( 103)

Which is why there's not much upside in joining the Big East (unless you care about a relatively meaningless conference championship). Right now, they're a glorified version of the Mountain West. And once AQ status goes away, they won't even be that.

Logic fail since, other than AFA, Big East seemingly only has to show a little interest, and suddenly MWC, C-USA, WAC, Sunbelt, and MAC teams start lining up to join The Big East.

Big East is and will continue to be > MWC

Those MWC, USA, WAC, Sunbelt, and MAC teams aren't able to go independent like BYU can. The Big East is their best option.

Your logic fail was when you called Big East a glorified MWC and projected them to be even worse when BCS system changes in 2014. Big East is better than MWC. It is MWC that will get worse because, BSU and SDSU, for example will be subtracted from MWC and added to Big East.

The Big East is better than the MWC but not by much. It's not far off to call them a glorified version of the Mountain West.

And I didn't say the Big East will necessarily get worse. Just that the AQ status going away will remove most of what makes the conference attractive in the first place.

The Big East actually has good upside, especially when compared to the MWC, MAC, Sun Belt, etc.. If the expansion experiment works, it will dwarf the other mid-major conferences.

The Universities that will be in the Big East have bigger alumni and fan bases, bigger and better stadiums and facilities, and WAY bigger and better television markets than anything the MWC or Conference USA will be able to put together.

For illustration, the average MWC stadium seats about 30-35K. Hawaii (50K), Air Force (46K), and SDSU (70K) are the outliers. And SDSU is bolting.

The C-USA has different tiers for stadium size - some have municipal stadiums that are or have been used for professional teams and bowl games - Tulane (Superdome), UTEP (Sun Bowl), and Memphis (LIberty Bowl). UAB actually has a nice stadium (70K) and ECU fits 50K. Most others are in the 30-40K range, including SMU, Houston, and UCF (though I believe both Houston and UCF have announced stadium expansion projects).

Most Big East stadiums are in the 50-65K range. Cincinnati (35K) and UConn (40K) are the smallest.

Also, the Big East will have at least a foot in the following major markets:

New York (#1)

Philadelphia (#4)

Dallas (#5)

Houston (#10)

Orlando (#13)

Tampa (#19)

San Diego (#28)

Cincinnati (#34)

Louisville (#50)

Compare the above list with Ft. Collins, Laramie, Fresno, Reno, Logan, and Albuquerque and you will see the difference.

I do not believe the BYU should break for the Big East right now (if ever). But I do think the Big East will be a much better conference than anything the MWC or C-USA or Sun Belt or MAc can offer.

I would say the Big East is what the Mountain West could have been. But, the Mountain West is losing members and growing by adding Fresno, Utah State, SJSU, and Nevada and the Conference USA is losing members and growing by adding Charlotte, Old Dominion, FIU, and North Texas.

Big East has lost members, and added the best of the MWC and C-USA.

If we are going to add non-BCS games we should look at the Sun Belt before going to the MWC. MTSU is from that conference. I think we should say to them that each year they can have one game in Provo for their best team on ESPN. A chance for them to get exposure and possibly a big win. And it would help our SOS rather than a FCS or WAC team.

I would rather play a 7-3 #62 Arkansas St than a 1-9 #178 NMSU to end the season. They don't have a conference champtionship game. It would be nice to take their champion and play a game as our #13 game every other year.

awesome idea. But what do the other teams not playing BYU do for that last weekend?

Their seasons would be done except for bowls. Or they had to, they might have to schuffle games around to make it work. It would take leadership from their commissioner. Of course we don't know what that is from our conference leadership.

It was postured as our 13th game, so the other teams would not be doing anything that weekend. The correct question would be can their best team get permission to play a 13th game - if not - if it were played in Hawaii - would the Hawaii exemption work.

Having said all of that - in the current beauty contest scenario called college football, it is unwise to play an extra game - especially one that means nothing. This is why Big 12 did not rush to get back to 12 teams and a championship game - took them out of NC picture once when the wrong team won.
