GunkPositives and negatives from last night's game:
Positives
1) Davies - 16 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 4 blocks. Great game by Davies. Shot 78% from the floor. Did a great job of running the floor. Forced things a couple of times, but he's recognizing doubles/triples better and passing it back out more. Very good vision on the court. Offense needs to run through him.
2) Haws - 22 points, 4 boards, 1 assist. Shot 47% in 30 min of play. He was aggressive. Seems to like his new roll as a leader on the team. Great vision. Love his jumper.
3) Carlino - 10 assists, 5 boards (3rd leading rebounder last night), and 9 points. Carlino did have 4 turnovers, but a couple of them were missed passes by his teammates. He did try to force some passes, but I like his aggressiveness. Really loved his passes down court to Davies. Anytime a defense doesn't get back on D and cover Davies is an easy 2 points for us.
4) Fast start - we came out strong and set the tone. Got a bit frantic at times, but it was good see us come out hard. We have a tendency to start slow.
5) Defense - great defense last night. Hands in passing lanes and our low-post D was great. Our doubles were really good and we covered the court. Liked the repeated switches from zone to man, kept TSU on their heels.
6) Bench play - players off the bench came in and played, contributed. Production didn't take a nose dive with the starters out.
Negatives
1) Rebounding - more specifically our ability to box out. We just didn't do it. He often had position, but rather than box out we simply went for the board and lost the rebound. When the shot goes up, we need to find a body and box them out. Davies should be grabbing 10+ boards a night and Austin should be right there with them. The fact our PG was the 3rd leading rebounder is great for Carlino but doesn't bode well for the team. Should be Sharp.
2) 3 point shooting - it's not really there. We shot 35% from behind the arc as a team. It needs to be above 40%, especially given we only have one legit low-post threat. Haws' range just isn't there. He needs to pass up on the 3 pointers. Carlino, of course, did his best Jimmer impression a few times and missed them all. Carlino needs to be more selective on the 3. Much prefer him shooting off the dribble.
3) Fast breaks - while we scored a lot of points in transition, which is a huge plus, we tried to force too many. Zylstra and Haws in particular seemed to just dribble right into traffic on fast breaks. If it's 1 on 3, they need to just hold up or go into the paint with intention of passing it out. Carlino did a bit of this too, but he seemed to also go into the traffic with the intent to draw traffic and pass to open shooters. I'll take that any day.
4) Austin - really needs to step up and play big. I know he likes the idea of being a Dirk Nowitzki type player, but Dirk plays physical, uses his size and rebounds. Austin wasn't particularly bad, but we need more than 4 points from him.
5) Foul trouble - Both Davies and Austin got into foul trouble. Fortunately, it was late in the game. But, we can't have either of those guys in foul trouble.
