More 2013 Scheduling news--not good

So, you might be wondering why BYU has not put their schedule out yet? OR perhaps why BYU and Utah did not do a press release on the 2013, 2016 games? Let me let you in on a little secret---Utah does not want the game. P12 does not want the series.



Take a look around, do you see any future P12 teams on the BYU schedule as of right now? Wazzu bought out their end of the 2013 return date, so we added Virginia. Good trade. But now Utah is not willing to play us because they do not want the 2013 game in Provo.



Take a look around and notice that the P12 is running from us. THey want to elevate Utah and in order to do that, they have to try to marginalize BYU. That means, expect no P12 teams to play BYU anytme soon, including Utah. Think back and remember the last time that BYU has schedules they were working on for the next 5-6 years with zero PAC games on them. Not sure you can find that in the last 40 years, at least.



This issue is real, and it is not looking to get any better anytime soon with the P12. Not unless ESPN intervenes and demands some sectional rivalry games to broadcast, as they are a PAC partner as well.

Good riddance to the PAthetiC 12. I'd rather play more Big XII, Big Ten, and ACC teams anyway.

While I understand the "good riddance" mindset, the majority of BYU's fans are in the West. With the MWC and now the PAC 12 essentially black-listing BYU, it will be very difficult for BYU to play road games in many alumni and Cougar-fan hotbeds. (though bravo to TH for getting games in the Midwest and South and the BYU fans' turnouts so far! - also, there is a very real East Coast bias, so playing road games in the ACC and Big Ten is fantastic for BYU's NATIONAL exposure...)



I really think BYU needs to get road games in California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and the Northwest. That's hard to do without the PAC 12 or MWC.



HOWEVER, what about neutral site games? The Poinsettia and Kraft Fight the Hungry Cheese bowl games get BYU into California in 2012 and 2013 and give local Cougar fans an opportunity to attend a good game.



BYU should look to do a deal with the Las Vegas Bowl for 2014. That gets us back into Vegas and LES South.



BYU should also look to schedule neutral site games in Denver, Phoenix, and perhaps Portland or Seattle - those would be great venues to play some Big 12 or Big Ten teams. May be even Notre Dame....Notre Dame generally has a neutral site game (Dublin and Chicago in 2012, Arlington in 2013, East Rutherford, NJ in 2014, etc.).



And, that would really stick it to the PAC 12!



v. Nerbaska in Denver for 2016?



v. Michigan in Phoenix for 2017?

Just found out that UNLV is trying to get a 60,000 seat stadium on campus. BYU could do UNLV a huge favor by committing to have one neutral-site game at the new stadium each season in a week where the UNLV team is on the road. BYU could get a lot of Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and even SEC teams to come play BYU at the Las Vegas stadium. Split the proceeds. Las Vegas is usually cheap and easy to get to from about anywhere in the country, hotel rates are reasonable, and there is plenty of entertainment before and after the game.



Win-win-win for BYU and its opponent and UNLV.

This. I think BYU should go for a 6 year deal with UNLV first off, then agree to play 1 neutral site game there every 3 years, and sign a 12-year deal for that. That gives them 7 BYU games in the first 12 years.



With a stadium in Vegas and so many LDS alums in the area, I could see other programs more than happy to play BYU in a neutral there as well. Allow us to do more H-H-N with teams rather than 2 for 1s.



THis would also make the LV Bowl much more attaractive for BYU to enter into a long term deal, and for other power leagues to want to send a team there. Face it, teh big boys love Vegas because their fans do, and with a better stadium, this could be the solution to BYU;s future Bowl problems.



BYU needsto be proactive with this and let the UNLD AD know this. He is a BYU alum after all.

Funny how the PUKE12 would suddenly think that BYU was such a threat to their existence, but you cannot discount the fact that the 2 games with Puktah are the only future games scheduled with BYU and the PUKE12.



I don't even know how to respond to such an accusation that looks very plausible on the surface.

This is probably the best thing I've read on CC in 2 weeks! This sounds like it could be a huge opportunity for independance to be more viable.



As far as the PAC12 thing, I think it sucks but the writing has been on the wall for a while now I feel. Every since they instituted the "stick it to BYU" rule 2 years ago and won't allow post September games with teams named BYU it's been pretty clear. As far as good riddance? I'm not sure. Good riddance if we can be competitive and outshine them it'd be great to see them come crawling back if they do. It'd suck if it happens the other way.

What two scheduled games with the Yewts? No contrat has been signed. The games are not scheduled. Nor will they be. Utah has backed out. See TH's comments. I think BYU is still hoping to salvage it, but the U has bailed.

Interesting point, Lawboy. Here is what AD Hills said in July when speaking about the rivalry game hiatus for 2014-2015:



"We are solidly committed to play BYU in 2013 (in Provo) and 2016 (in Salt Lake City) and are close to finalizing a contract. Our intent is to continue to schedule BYU unless unusual circumstances dictate otherwise. In no way does this signal an end to the rivalry."

However, AD Hill also stated that the BYU-Ewete game would be held in the "fourth week" of the season. The "fourth week" is technically September 21, the date BYU has Boise State at home. Perhaps AD Hill meant the "fourth week" in September (Sep. 28).



I can't find anything from BYU that confirms or denies the home game against the Ewetes in September 2013.



Note also that is very interesting that Michigan has now scheduled BOTH the Ewetes and BYU for 2015. Whereas, the Ewetes used the Michigan game as an excuse not to play BYU. I think "good riddance" IS in order. I actually like BYU's future schedules with the Ewetes.

What is the PAC-12 so scared of? They hold all of the cards--a BCS conference, the Rose Bowl and bowl agreements down to the fifth or sixth place team--yet they are backing out and scared to play BYU--I'd sure cancel the BB and other sports, because I think it benefits UT far more than us in terms of attendance, except that in BB at least it is an easy win for us....

This will lead to better competition from and greater market share for BYU. The PAC 12 wants to own more of the Utah market and keep BYU out of other West Coast markets as much as possible. The strategy is to severely limit BYU's access to the markets by not scheduling games. This is especially important while the PAC 12 tries to get its PAC 12 network up and running. It doesn't want to have to compete with ESPN for local and regional games.



I wonder if there are any anti-trust or other legal issues here. Of course, teams do not have to schedule BYU. But if the PAC 12 and MWC are directing their members not to schedule BYU, then I bet there is a legal issue.

You just found this out? You need to follow The Bibster postings more closely. I posted news of this on CC previously, and also suggested playing some games in Las Vegas. Got ridiculed of course - the notion that BYU would need UNLV for anything or want to help anyone from The MWC. Posters raised concerns about being able to get enough fans to make the trip during regular season.



I will make a carefully worded post about Independent Scheduling - avoiding any metaphors that apparently are too inflammatory - but un-level playing field scheduling practices, and Bowl selection processes that exclude BYU are about the only significant problems of Independence. But they are huge problems and may be the undoing of Independence.

Saw much speculation re why this was cancelled - PAC out to get BYU, etc. Ditto re the rumors of the Utes wanting to bail. There may be something to that. I have some other theories re the bigger picture conspiracy theories. Business is business. Might be some hardball. I will make a carefully worded post about that - avoiding metaphors some find too inflammatory.



But in this specific case.



Go look at who WSU replaced us with. They just wanted to dummy down their schedule so they can win a game or two while rebuilding. They replaced a 50% or greater chance of losing with a 10% or less chance of losing.



If U bails as Lawboy has suggested - we will want to see if they go schedule Alabama to ensure they have a NC worthy schedule - or go schedule Weber State at home to ensure that they are Bowl Eligible.
