BYU inks 2 year deal with Virginia 2013-14

Virginia and BYU will meet in football for a two-game series in 2013 and 2014, the schools jointly announced today. The teams are scheduled to meet Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Charlottesville and Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, in Provo, Utah.



I've been to Charlottesville--not for a game--and it is a great place to visit. Lots of history in teh area. The University was formed and plotted out by THomas Jefferson. Monticello is not too far, nor is Colonial Williamsburg. Along with places for Madison and Monroe. Great trip to take for US History buffs.

I suspect this means that the Wazzu game will not happen in 2013 now as well.



Starting to wonder if the Utah deal for 2013, 2016 will happen now either.

Good matchup. Surely this means we will play 13 games in 2013. The 2013 road game at Virginia would give us 7 road games and 5 home games. Likely one more home game in October or November against a light-weight.



Also, this likely means that the Washington State road game will be 9/14, right? And the Utah home on 9/28? Hopefully this means we will have bye's before both Wisconsin and Notre dame.

Good point, Lawboy. I forgot that TH mentioned that two future BYU opponents had backed out. I would be surprised if Wazzu backed out of a home game, though. Hopefully they release the 2013 schedule soon.

12 games announced (Virginia, Texas, BSU, USU, Ga Tech, Houston, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Hawaii, Wa State, Utah, Mid Tennessee St.). Didn't Holmoe say that one that cancelled was announced and one wasn't? That would mean 1 of these games would go away and another 1 or 2 would still be announced (can have 13 games in 2013 due to @ Hawaii game).

The announced on going away is Wazzu. Not sure if it was cancelled or pushed back. We shall see.

13 sched didn't get any easier did it. I don't like the idea of 7 road games and 5 home games. Welcome to independance.

I don't care if the 7th home game is Southern Utah, just get us 7 home games. It would be nice if we end up swapping Idaho for a bottom dweller BCS team like Indiana, Minnesota, etc. Or a mid/upper tier MWC like Nevada, Fresno, Colorado State.



I like getting Virginia. An ACC win is respectable and it is unlikely that they are going to be very good in the next two years. Probably a little tougher than Washington State. I do worry that Washington State is pulling what Nevada did where they put off our game for a few years and go from having a bad team to a very good team and beat us.

Bring on Kentucky! We are one SEC team away from completing the BCS conference trifecta next year. We are playing the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, Pac 12, Big East, and Notre Dame. SEC is all that is missing.

@ frdbtr - Lawboy's point was that the Wazzou road game was pushed back or cancelled, such that BYU will only have 6 road games in 2013, even with the newly-announced Virginia game. BYU just needs one more home game to complete a 12-game schedule for 2013. BYU also has the possibility to schedule two more home games, to bring the 2013 schedule to a total of 13 games, 7 at home.



2013 is actually shaping up to be a very good and very balanced schedule.



Home games - Texas, Boise State, Utah, Georgia Tech, Middle Tennessee, and TBD



Road games: Virginia, Utah State, Houston, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Hawaii



I see four GREAT home games that should be tough matchups and likely two gimmies (Middle Tennessee and C-USA, WAC, or FCS).



Virginia, Utah State, Houston, and Hawaii on the road are all very winnable games. Wisconsin and Notre Dame on the road will be tough, but BYU will still have a chance.



2013 should be what most of the naysayers were hoping for with independence. Now, let the whining begin. But, before you start, note that 2014 is also shaping up to be a good schedule, with Virginia, Houston, and Southern Miss visiting Provo, along with Utah State and Hawaii, and exciting road games to Texas, Boise State, and UCF. (My fingers are also crossed that Georgia Tech jumps back on the schedule after 2013, now the ACC will only have 8 conference games)

Washington State and Idaho leaving would be 2 easy wins that just hurt your SOS. Pushing back Wa St to 2014 or something would be fine. But that would mean they only have 2 2013 OOC games unless they are adding someone less likely to beat them. :lol:

I think we will be bowl eligible next year. A lot of tough games with a young team but it looks like we can get to 6 wins here.

9-4 (assuming we get a 13th game) with this schedule seems more than reasonable.

Hawaii

WSU or replacement team



Toss up games:



Boise State

Utah

Wisconsin (depending on how quickly they bounce back, maybe they are better included in the underdog category below)



Tough games which we are more likely to be underdogs:



Texas

Notre Dame



Win two of the toss up games and we are at 9 wins. If a 13th game is added it is probably an FCS team which is another win. I'd take four losses against this schedule versus two losses against our old MWC schedule any day of the week. To be clear, if we only lose 4 games next year, it is a successful season.

I think that BYU, with a younger QB, will lose one of the games that we will be favored to win. My call is at Virginia or at Houston.



I would also put the Wisconsin road game in the "tough" column. But, I would also predict that we win one of the tough games. Most likely @ Notre Dame, but could see us squeak a win over Texas at home.



Split the Utah and Boise State games and that nets the Cougars an 8-4 record. I would call that a successful season and would WAY rather see yearly 8-4 records against a 2013-type schedule than 10-2 against the MWC/WAC.



The nice thing about the 2013 schedule is that there is a good balance of really tough, toss-up, should-win, and gimmie games and a good mix of home and road. If the stars align, this is the kind of schedule in which BYU could really make some noise in the national landscape. Wins over Texas, Boise State, Utah, and Georgia Tech will give the national audience cause to pay attention. Road wins over Wisconsin and Notre Dame would be tremendous. Even road wins over Virginia and Houston would create ripples.

I worry with all of the changes on our D. Some of those favored games will be real fights.

Ansah and Van Noy will be missed. But I think Kaufusi and Peck will be ready to step up and Dulan should be back with a medical exception to give us a strong d-line. JC and returning RM help will fill in as well. Hadley, Leuta-Douyere, Fua, Unga, and Stout will round out the linebacking corps for a solid front seven. Johnson, Sorenson, and Bills will provide experience and quality play in the backfield.



With Ansah graduating and especially if Van Noy moves on, the 2013 defense will not be as good as this year. But it will still be solid. If not top 10, it should still be top 25.



Our offense actually gets me excited for next year. Williams is coming into his own and should be ready to go and Alisa will be back. Lasike is a bruiser and should develop into a go-to guy in short yardage situations. Apo and Falslev will be back, and hopefully Hoffman. I think the Matthews brothers will contibute and our TE's should continue to be decent. If Hill can heal and perform, we have the tools for a great BYU offense. The key, though, will be the offensive line. I'm not sure how we are looking for next year, but honestly, can't see anywhere to go but to improve for next year, even if we lose Brown and Hansen.



With a solid defense and improvement at the QB position with experienced skill position players, I see BYU being competitive in every game. By no means do I see national championship contention, but I see a team that will compete against a good schedule and provide an exciting season.

I love the way these schedules are shaping up for the next few years. I have heard the complaints about the scheduling woes of independence but have been so pleased to see how Tom Holmoe has crafted the future of our program into something special. Of course, it's more special if we actually can win, but I like the opportunities that are presented. Utah sports talk radio guys were talking the other day about how arduous our upcoming schedule is and how difficult it would be to actually make it to a BCS game. They seemed to imply that we would be better off in a weak conference where our BCS path is easier (like Hawaii a few years back). My take is the exact opposite. I'd rather have the difficult schedule and the rare (perhaps very rare) opportunity to win enough to make it to the BCS where if you actually do make it you're good enough to win and not get exposed as a pretender as you would with a schedule where you haven't played anybody of significance. Whew--run-on. Anyway, I'm excited for the future.
