The Best 4-Loss Team

Last year it was Tulsa - and then BYU avoided becoming a 4-Loss team by beating them in their Bowl Game. I forget whether it was The Armed Forces Bowl or what other forgettable bowl. But it was a much more worthy opponent than that record indicated. It was possibly our best win in nearly three years.



This year - BYU may end up as the best 4-Loss team at the end of the regular season. Hopefully, we will not let some 2 or 3-Loss team turn us into a 4-Loss team.

Sorta begs the question: Is there such a thing as a good four loss team? Kinda like: Who got the best kiss from their sister?

Sorta like being the best player on the Kansas City Chiefs.

I think it's a good point. The only bad loss was Oregon State. If the ball had bounced right in the other 3 games we'd have won them and be in the top 20 and there should be a lot less complaining about coaches and Riley Nelson. Maybe Lark should have been on the field more. What if one o lineman had have been healthier? The way is sits now, if we're not the best 4 loss team we're in the top 2 or 3.

I don't think you can call a loss to a top ten team a "bad loss." Sure, we ended up losing by two scores, but the game was actually much closer than that.

We can still finish ranked in the top 25 with four losses. Last year's final rankings included FSU (8-4) at 23 and NB (9-4) at 24. We are better than either one of them this year as our defense alone gets valuable recognition. We have lost to here teams by combined total of 7 points and to two top 10 teams.

One top 10 team... Oregon State isn't top 10 anymore and I suspect they finish around 20-25 with likely losses to Oregon and Stanford--though the Beavers are probably top 5 if they win out. As long as Notre Dame doesn't choke before the SC game, they've probably already guaranteed themselves a BCS bowl and at least a fringe top 10 final ranking. Utah State should be ranked if they win out (only losses are to BYU and Bucky).



But with loses to unranked Boise State and Utah and a marquee win against unranked Utah State, the only way BYU is ranked at the end of the season is if they beat a ranked team in the bowl game. Hopefully BSU, SDSU, or Fresno State can crack the rankings before the end of the season.

Right now, both Notre Dame and Oregon State are projected to be in BCS bowl games this year. Of course, so was Boise State last week, so...

OSU would be in the Rose Bowl if Oregon goes to the NC game.

I don't think the Rose Bowl is bound to take a Pac 12 team if Oregon goes to the NC game, but if they were, it seems to me they'd prefer UCLA, USC, or Stanford among the possible Pac 12 teams. Whichever of UCLA or USC makes the championship will presumably have another loss to Oregon, so they'd have at least 3 conference losses. Oregon State has one more conference loss presumably to Oregon, so from a record standpoint, I suppose the Stanford-Oregon State winner has a strong case for the Rose Bowl. Assuming of course that the Rose Bowl is bound to take a Pac 12 team if Oregon gets plucked from them.

They already played each other. All three of them will probably be favored in every game the rest of the way. That is why it will be fun following the MWC. It would be great if all 3 win out and all three crack the top 25. You also gotta follow USU. If they knock Louisiana Tech out if the Top 25, they make room for themselves and MWC teams.



Just root against any 18-25 ranked teams the next three or four weeks.

Root for 4 BYU Shutouts including The P Bowl. Hope for some good exposure like BSU used to get for pounding weaker teams on ESPN.



There is a story in the making here that will play we'll other than for disgruntled BYU fans if BYU wins out and our MWC opponent wins out until we beat them.

There is no doubt that this BYU team is the best 4-loss team in the country. It is very conceivable that this team could be a 1 or 0 loss team.

Only if you actually consider OSU a top ten team. I do not and did not. Top 25 at best. Not a very impressive team, coming in with a QB that hadn't taken a snap in forever. And we let them win. On our field. By multiple scores. On the first (and hopefully last) blackout game. Which was also homecoming.



I don't think that any of our losses are "bad" in that they are teams we should have smoked. The worst was the :utard: , but even that was against a bowl team (ya, they'll get to 6 wins...thanks to us!) but that's not really a 'bad' loss.



But to me, any "good" 4 win team is a team that has most of the pieces, but not enough to get them over the top. Which perfectly defines us this year. With the right pieces (i.e. a D-1 caliber QB and a slightly above average O-line) we are 9-0 or 8-1 at worst, looking the Fiesta Bowl right in the eyes.

Okay, a top-15 team who is clearly a better team than us and whose offensive weapons were two of the best wide receivers in the country and an outstanding O-line, not their QB.
