Cougarfan87Recall a time in the not too distant past when we BYU fans considered ourselves too good to be lumped in with the mid-major or non-BCS monikers. We had amazing wins over Miami, Oregon, Oregon State (when they were ranked), and Oklahoma. We just needed a chance to prove ourselves.
We'll, I think the chance has arrived, and I think we are doing a pretty good job of it. Believe me, I am very frustrated by some losses that could be wins right now, but after attending the Georgia Tech game, and listening to the fireside, I know Bronco wants to get this ship sailing in the right direction.
Telling to me that BYU is going where we want them to be are the following points:
-BYU is on TV far more than it used to be.
-BYU has not been blown out by anyone this year, which used to be a common occurence in LaVell days against good teams (think of the beat downs by Penn State and A&M).
-BYU's schedule, win or lose, is infinitely more entertaining to watch and follow and hope for what might be.
-I have not heard one person say, "but they don't play anyone," like we used to hear all the time.
-We are much more nationally relevant than the :utard:
To me, Independence has paid off in a big way. Bronco will continue to schedule all-comers, which means he wants to have challenging games to get up for just like the fans. You have to do that if you are Independent because each game has to be something worth playing for. Short of a special season, there are only consolation prizes. Under the MWC, we needed a few undefeated seasons to be considered a National Championship team. Even being part of a BCS conference, your conference has to be one of the top two in strength (Big East champ would likely be left out). But when you can schedule great games all season long, like Notre Dame, all you have to do is go undefeated and you're in. No one can knock your strength of schedule. Not that it will ever be easy to go undefeated, but at least we can enjoy the journey playing games that are exciting to watch while we wait for that season where the stars align.
Then again, maybe I just got too much sun on great Autumn day in Atlanta, so things look a little brighter.
