Riley Nelson Improvement

The biggest improvement I saw from Riley Nelson was his screen passes to the wide receivers. His passes looked night and day better than they had in past games. He was throwing them on a rope and in the correct location to allow the receiver to catch the ball with their momentum going forward. In past games he was throwing low or turning the receivers around. The screen game worked wonderfully against Georgia Tech and would have been nice to have working in past games. Seems that they put some practice into those throws last week.

What has helped Riley is the more passing play calls and fewer QB draw play calls. Messages apparently have been sent, received and implemented that Riley must run much less frequently and throw much more often.

This is what really riles me. Why does it take our coaches so long to figure these things out. they get two qbs injured before they finally say, hey, maybe so many qb draws is not a good idea.

Too bad it took 2/3 way through his senior year for these improvements to occur. But as to his deep ball, still is pretty bad. A huge fluttering rainbow. Apor was 10 yards open and had to wait on it, got killed, and made a nice catch due to such a poor deep ball.



If people wonder why we don;t take many shots deep dow nteh field with such good receivers, it is because our QB has limmited arm strength, which allows opposing Ds to close on his throws really quickly.

It's INCONCEIVABLE! And it's UNACCEPTABLE!! 3/4 through his Sr year and this year as a whole for Doman, and we finally get offensive execution and even what I would label PRECISION. GT is not ND, but, BYU could have used some of this precision last week. Oh and vs utah BSU.

Again, this GT victory displays what a waisted season this WAS!

To back that up, I bet we took more shots down the field in the two games that Taysom Hill started then we have the rest of the season combined. Hopefully, that's a indication of what we'll see in the years to come.



Granted, I don't recall him connecting on any of them, but he was very close and that accuracy will come with time.

Everyone knows the key to effective passing stats is to underthrow the WR and cause them to come back to the ball. Sheesh. That way we can give the other team a chance to play and make catches too. I think they should apply the little league rule and not allow rushing by the defense when the O is punting.

Lets not get to high on either Doman or Riley. GT';s defense isn't that good. Middle Tenn. took them to the woodshed.

Byu also looked great against Hawaii too. Byu's offense has looked bad against every good defense they have played. The rule of thumb for the Cougs has been "good defense = less than 24 points" As you all know, 24 is the magic number.( for both O and D)



All that said I think Riley did very well overall at managing the offense. My guess is that the pain is gone and so is the Lortab.

What's this thread about? Let's not give any credit where credit is due! RN is the worst QB to ever don the Oval Y, and let's not forget that! There is no redemption to be made. Any QB on our roster would have beaten GT. in fact BYU would have won by 50, and there would have been no interception returned for a TD. I'm shocked that BM didn't yank RN after the pick, and I think that we should be seriously considering a head coaching change. TIC



Great overall team play, in Atlanta. We really opened a few eyes. The Fox announcers had nothing but good things to say about the total effort.



What does 3 losses by a combined 7 points, and the home loss to a top 10 team that was much closer than the score indicates, and the outcome of the OK vs. ND game say about this 2012 BYU football team?



Before the season started I conceded that this team may finish with 4 losses, and I wasn't going to be happy about it, but I never would have imagined that I would have been as impressed by the accomplishment.

Riley looked really good last night. I was most impressed with his legs. He looked fast and crisp. His long ball didn't flutter, and was on target.

But if you take away his first 7 throws (all completions), he had a poor day completion wise. And when he scrambles, his throws are erratic. He's pretty good from the pocket, and he doesn't have the arm strength to reach the receivers who are too far downfield after he scrambles.



We did have some dropped balls; I'll excuse anybody who has to play in sub-freezing weather. What in the world are doing playing a late night game late in November?
